Furiosa’s Dementus was not an easy character to get a grip on, ie to understand where he came from and what formed him … I found inspiration in despots, ‘gurus’ and showmen – with elements of all appearing in the final costume.

His costumes were born in our tiny studio in Peckham, using motorbike gear, parachutes and of course a teddy bear! We tried all sorts of paint techniques, dye for the parachute, as well as various draping looks – well aware this could be a nightmare on a motorbike …!
Later in Australia we were able to fit Chris Hemsworth and refine the whole look to suit everyone’s vision, with the final costume being a collaborative exercise as it should be on any film.

So here are some photos of the ideas on the stands, figuring it all out with Lauren Reyhani and Stephen Miles, fitting and working with Dan Blacklock, Chris’s Key Costumer in Sydney, before shooting in Broken Hill.
It was a journey, but a wonderful journey to make with Chris and George.
