Grief/Spring.
Very proud of this presentation of 6 new works. A true labor of love — pushing my own vulnerability forward — capturing my mourning, care, and cultivation towards motherhood. Considering the expansiveness of our journeys towards an experience not solely tied to our individual bodies and their perceived capacities. Thank you @caseykaplangallery @friezeofficial for the opportunity to create peace and pause on an otherwise hectic world and environment. February 29 – March 3, 2024, Santa Monica Airport. Friday Preview, March 1: 11am – 7pm Saturday, March 2: 11am – 7pm Sunday, March 3: 11am – 6pm

It was such a joy presenting @asherald with her @art21 award on Tuesday evening at their gala. I couldn’t help myself… “There is no one I would rather give an award to than the person whose name I am called the most. (pause for laughter hehe) **mind you no one laughed so I said it twice cuz this ish is reallll 🤣😅** No but seriously, I get it, we both paint people of color and we do look like we belong at the same family reunion and although we actually are not related, nor the same person or artist, you have truly become like a sister to me. Behind the curtain of our lives, I have watched you navigate your career and well being with incredible resilience and grace. I have the privilege of “painting with you” as we chat on the phone about everything from which paint brushes we’re loving at the moment, how to navigate the healthcare system, to our hopes and dreams. Your fight, determination, and perseverance is infectious – and I can say you truly practice what you preach. Laying the foundation for us as black women American painters to be seen as the complex individuals we are. This honor is a symbol of the impact you’ve made (and will continue to make) in the lives of so many. From the artist watching Art 21 to having your own Art 21 to being honored here tonight at the Art 21 gala – you’ve modeled how important it is to believe in yourself even when no one is watching.” ❤️ @asherald

“I will always remember when the stars fell down around me and lifted me up above the George Washington Bridge.”—Faith Ringgold, Tar Beach I’ve had this print since I was a kid. It was a gift because the book Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold was an all time favorite. It would have been the first artwork to call my own and has been and will continue to be a guiding light in my life. Rest in power Faith. 1930-2024

“Through the act of making these paintings, real relationships are born,” says Jordan Casteel (@jordanmcasteel). Casteel painted this portrait after befriending clothing designer, Fallou Wadje (@baayfall_fashions), on her daily commute to the Studio Museum in Harlem. Meeting the viewer’s gaze, Wadje exudes a level of familiarity common among Casteel’s paintings, which feature the artist’s evolving relationships with her subjects as a means of celebrating her community. See “Fallou” as part of Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys through July 7. #GiantsBkM #TheDeanCollection #BrooklynMuseum #JordanCasteel
