Julia Holter Instagram – This coming Monday, March 15, @weareumaw is holding socially-distant demonstrations outside Spotify offices internationally to deliver our demands to Spotify. Spotify is consistently devaluing music with its practices, and this is affecting all musicians. Covid has left most musicians who make music for a living out of work, as gigs are their main source of income, and yet, since Covid, Spotify has tripled in valuation to around $60 billion. Streaming is 85% of all recorded music income these days, and most of that streaming money is not going to most of the musicians whose music is being streamed, and Spotify dominates the streaming world, in part because of its practices which may be considered to be a kind of predatory pricing. It is urgent we continue to bring our demands to Spotify and to build awareness to the public about its practices. I have been very lucky as a musician, but Iām worried about the future of creative music, and especially worried for musicians just starting out now. It doesnāt have to be this way, and there has to be a change. Please join us wherever your local action is and see you at the LA one which will be from 1pm-2pm
.
Thank you to the great @tomorrowtoday.us for printing our signs here in LA
