Jully Black Instagram – Part 1: My friend and long-time collaborator @roy_perreault got me GOOD today.  We make each other laugh, we make each other think, we support unconditionally and magic happens!  He works quietly (mostly) in the background, but today I want to share with you all how simple (but important) and honest words make what I’ve done, what I do, and what I will continue to do, worth every sacrifice. ###### “I went to bed feeling heard, and I woke up feeling seen.  Representation is everything for the underrepresented.  Allies taking a stance on a global platform for you and your entire community and for the land we share is an entirely different, higher level of understanding and powerful show of support. It takes nerve. It takes spine.  It takes LOVE. Jully Black is a friend of mine.  We are family.  We have worked together on a countless number of projects over the years, and while every project has been fun, enlightening and important in their own respective and collective right, this latest ‘project’ – Jully performing the Canadian National Anthem at the NBA All-Stars Weekend – holds a very special place in my heart, and in the hearts of many. I am Indigenous, Ojibwe, First Nations.  My ancestors were the first people on Canadian and American soil.  Need I say more?  If I need to say more in order for you to understand the significance of this post, please remember it is not about you.  This is about us.  It is your responsibility to educate yourself so that we can all have the same conversation in the correct tone and with the mutual respect and level of understanding that is required for such a conversation.  If I need not say more, thank you for keeping an open mind and heart. Indeed, Jully changed a single word (O Canada, our home *on* native land …) but do not let her soulful melody and that beautiful voice get buried in politics.  Jully’s version is going down as the GREATEST Canadian Anthem of ALL-TIME! It kicked ALL THE ASSES!  It was Church, it was R&B, it was fully, deeply soulFULL; her unique blend of technique, power, range, performance, and connection left us stunned.  My soul left the chat when she hit those runs.  I mean, #CHILLS, right? …
