Shaved Ice Collection かき氷コレクション 🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧🍧 Summer is here! It’s so spicy here in Tokyo, so I decided to follow up last week’s frozen treat collection with this week’s shaved ice collection! Until coming to Japan, I had only had the cheap (but delicious!!) shaved ice you get at fairs… and of course that it available here, too. BUT! Japan (and much of Asia Hawaii) has taken shaved ice to new heights! So many varieties of toppings, and so very refreshing! Which of these would you most like to eat right now??

Hydrangea Sweets and Matcha 抹茶と紫陽花の和菓子 🪻🍵🪻🍵🪻🍵🪻 For this month’s challenge, I knew I wanted to paint some traditional Japanese sweet bean paste desserts. Wagashi are often paired with matcha, and they are interesting in that they are frequently designed to reflect the season. June is the beginning of Japan’s rainy season, and it’s also the season of my very favorite flower… the hydrangea! I love the variety of color and how a single plant can have such beautiful gradations. I bought these desserts from @tsuruya.yoshinobu_tokyo , and the youkan (square one) had a hint of lemon flavor as well! So lovely! I also bought a hydrangea-colored matcha bowl specifically for this piece. The theme for this weekend’s workshop has been finalized! We will be painting the Japanese cherry tart from Foundry! In Japan, you primarily see two types of cherrys- American Cherries which are sweet and dark and Japanese cherries or “sakuranbo” which are slightly brighter and have interesting gradations of color from yellow to light red/pink. We are nearing the end of cherry season, but since my favorite tart shop “Foundry” has a Japanese cherry tart through June, I decided to use it as the subject for my watercolor workshop this weekend 6/29 from 1pm! I will be holding it in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, and while the primary language will be in Japanese, I will translating into English as I go, too! We still have a few spots open. So sign up to learn how to paint this lovely cherry tart (of course, a take-home tart is included in the workshop fees!)🍒🥧 日本に来るまでにさくらんぼうの存在を知りませんでした!
