Born in 1947, @lidiabastianich grew up on the peninsula of Istria which at the time was a region governed by the newly-formed communist Yugoslavia in the wake of WWII. By 1956, Lidia’s Italian parents decided they needed to flee.
Reserved for refugees seeking political asylum, the Risiera di San Sabba camp served as her family’s home for the next two years. As a ten-year-old, Lidia was separated from her father unsure if they would ever be reunited. The U.S. eventually opened up its borders to political refugees under the Eisenhower administration. Lidia’s family was one of the first to emigrate.
They landed in New York City — the same place where she would open up her first restaurant and establish herself as an award-winning host on @pbs, best-selling cookbook author and one of the most recognizable celebrity chefs in the country.
This year’s recipient of @televisionacad’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Lidia has spent her last 25 years on public television (12 with GBH) putting her signature nonna touch on programs like “Lidia’s Kitchen” and “Lidia Celebrates America.”
Lidia: “I am who I am because of the opportunities that I received in the United States. I think it is the duty of the immigrant to be forever grateful and give back when they come into a comfortable position. This is what immigration should be all about.”

I love this dish with ripe, meaty Roma tomatoes, which can be found year round and really benefit from having their flavors concentrated by baking. These can be served warm or at room temperature, either as a side dish or as part of an antipasto buffet. When cold, they are marvelous cut and tossed in green salads, because baking brings out the true tomato taste. Roughly chopped, they make a great topping for a bruschetta. Zucchini Roll-Ups. This dish is a picnic favorite: the bite-size rolls are perfect to pop into your mouth at room temperature. Zucchini is readily available and affordable, especially in the summertime, and when prepared with a little imagination, as in this dish, it is delicious and festive-looking. I literally grew up on zucchini prepared this way— sliced into thin strips, dipped in egg, and fried. Zucchini is such an abundant and tasty vegetable, yet too often is bland and unpleasing when served. This preparation is simple and full of flavor. The anchovies provide much of it, and if you crave the anchovy taste you can increase the amount used. On the other hand, if you are apprehensive about anchovies, cut the amount in half. For extra spice, add crushed red pepper as well. Serve this hot, as an appetizer or a side dish, or prepare it in advance and serve at room temperature. It’s delicious either way (and thus an excellent buffet item). The savory zucchini makes a great pasta sauce, too—simply toss with hot drained ziti (or other short hollow pasta) and top with grated cheese. Buon Gusto! This is a perfect early summer dish and it can be served many different ways. As a main course, set the shrimp skewers on a plate, and spoon some of the colorful and delicious salsa over them. For a buffet, pile all the shrimp skewers on a plate, and set the salsa next to it for people to serve themselves. Rice & Pea Soup. This classic recipe was always a favorite of mine growing up, and it’s a recipe that everyone makes a little differently, according to preference. I like my risi e bisi rather brothy while others make theirs quite dense.
