Miss that face so much. He loved cycling, too. What didn’t we do together? He bought me a bright yellow vest because I wanted one just like his. But I do still see him everywhere. He was my other half after all. He still makes me smile and laugh and I correct myself when I’m home alone singing and hit a (rare) note out of tune. I miss every bit of him, but that’s how it should be, right? Because I loved every bit of him. Even how he didn’t like it when I cried about something that I now see was silly or when I seemed even the slightest bit down. He would want to fix it and make it better. Sometimes he’d give me an abrupt hug and say, “There. Better?” Which would inevitably make me laugh and make whatever was wrong, immediately, better. Not sure he’d be too impressed I’m out here still making everyone cry with my memories of us and our Star Trek journey. Because he’d be doing the opposite by now. He’d be making sure everyone remembers the good times, gently reminding us we have to accept what has happened, and helping us move forward with renewed determination. He’d also buy us all a few rounds of whiskey and keep you at the pub long past you were due home, charming you with his wit and regaling you with stories and making you forget your troubles if even just for a few hours. But then I’d remind him, in a moment alone, that crying is okay. Crying is helpful. Crying is necessary. And I know he’d agree. He’d understand. Especially now. Crying is a release for me, after which I find myself able to focus and reminisce and smile again. I have to ride my bike and I have to pick up my banjo. Goals for the next couple of weeks. Things he’d want me to be doing because he knows they once made me happy. I’ll add it to my list. Brian knows how I love my lists. He’s No. 1 on all of them. But at least that’s nothing new. How lucky we were. How lucky we remain. 🚵♂️💘🔥

She’s like a mini me, dressed as Deborah Sampson, who fought in disguise for the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War and pointed out for generations of women to come: “Why can I not fight for my country, too?” Proud of my niece for choosing to represent such a trailblazer, putting together such a boss outfit for a school project, and fearlessly going against the grain. I’m like a century older, but I already look up to her. #rebelgirl @rebelgirls
