Thank you @raghurai.official for sending me this precious photo. I loved your caption – U and your mom…!! Indeed. Just because you can’t see me, it doesn’t mean I don’t exist! And you captured Ma’s inner and outer grace, beauty and dignity in this one candid image. #varshadas #mother
Better late than never…Happy Pride Month! My journey of consciously engaging with issues of LGBTQIA began with Fire, when this vocabulary to describe the queer community didn’t even exist! It was my first film as an actor that I simply stumbled upon. And I am so glad I did. It made me sensitive towards all that we perceive as the ‘other’. Fire was one of the first mainstream films that portrayed a love relationship between two women in a sensitive manner. Over the years I have heard all kinds of responses, ranging from compliments for being part of a bold, ahead-of-its-time film to accusing me of making all women lesbians! My resolve to be an ally has only grown stronger. While the fight continues, even after 28 years, the discourse around the issue has significantly evolved since then. There is still a lot needed to bring about greater awareness and overcome deep rooted prejudice. Fire triggered something important and brought the issue into the public domain. Thanks to Fire, I evolved as a person. It helped me look at the issue with greater depth and sensitivity. It was a landmark film. Glad I was a part of it. #Pridemonth #loveislove #fire @deepamehtaofficial @azmishabana18 #LGBTQIA #equality

Sharing where I stayed in Geneva. A small boutique hotel in the middle of wilderness. A little outside the city. The place, the flowers and trees and the view from my window- all so beautiful and fresh. On Mondays I was told they are fully closed. No food, no cleaning. My initial reactions was, what kind of a hotel is this?! But the reason made me rethink. The staff needs a holiday too. And they are surely not over populated where labour is cheap. So the few people who work need to have their time. Made complete sense. #geneva

I know I know, we are all sharing our opinions on the election results. And that’s far more interesting and relevant. But for me, my travel diary must go on! So sharing some random moments from my day in Geneva where I just walked all over the city by myself. It was fun! Playing chess on the road was the funnest! #geneva
The clouds are here. Mumbai is cooler and less polluted with the rains. Though unabashed construction all over is enough to add to noise and air pollution. But in the evening light even the buildings are looking like art installations. Though not the ones I want to see! The birds, in search of trees are hovering around. Sharing the concrete jungle from one window and from the other one, the sea that is also being bulldozed with construction. All because we want more convenience. We are all complicit in this destruction. #mumbai #clouds #concretejungle

Our London Diary! Won’t bore you with more now that I am back and have returned to a long list of things to do. Have a good weekend! 🤗
Attended the opening of the General Assembly of @who and participated at a round table that had opening remarks by @drtedros and key note by the dean of the medical school of University of California. The panel consisted of the global director for health nutrition and population at @worldbank , health ministers from Indonesia, Singapore and Ireland. Some other health ministers joined virtually. On the panel I was the lone woman and broke the colour palette with a bright orange dupatta! I spoke about the role of art and cinema in amplifying their message, in reaching more people, in changing perceptions, challenging prejudices and correcting misinformation. Though most of our cinema doesn’t use this power it has. Anyhow the others were doing the heavy lifting and pledged serious funds for WHO to do more work. We need everyone – from policymakers to grassroots volunteers to media to every individual to commit to better health for all. Through this experience I realised the magnitude of the problem but also the enormous work that is happening and needs to happen. Sorry if it’s boring you. But for my personal diary that I keep here, it was an important learning experience that I would like to remember. #health #healthforall
