As most of my amazing fans know by now, I am unable to attend #HOTSW4 in New York this weekend. I got a new job that I’m very excited about but the shooting schedule changed and with the current COVID protocols at work I am not able to leave the country for the weekend anymore. It breaks my heart that I can’t be in New York with all of you. Being back at conventions in person these past couple of months has been so beautiful for me and I have been looking forward to Heroes of the Shadow World for almost three years now, but the worst part by far is disappointing all of you. I hope you know how sorry I am and how grateful I am to all of you for your understanding and support. It means the world to me as do all of you. #measureyourpowernotyourdresssize 💪🏽Over the last few months I’ve been re-evaluating my relationship to exercise. As you know committing to regular practises of fitness and exercise changed my life in really Beautiful ways. But a big part of my fitness journey was about community. It was about getting out of the house, taking classes with people who challenged me, working with trainers and peers who motivated me and focusing on my physical and mental health. Then Covid hit, and it was me in my living room lifting weights and running on the spot. It was still good for my serotonin and overall health but after two years I started to feel an old feeling of resistance to exercise again. It felt like a chore, an obligation or a way to “keep my weight down” which is a mindset I’ve been fighting against for years. So, a few months ago I worked with a great councillor who encouraged me to make sure I was exercising because it made me happy and strong and not because it had become an obsessive or unhealthy practice like the disordered eating habits I’ve struggled with since I was a child. I started only doing exercise that I was excited about doing on my own. Hiking, trail running, walking. I started to feel a healthier relationship to my fitness again. But I REALLY did miss weight training. I realized it wasn’t the weight training that was the problem, it was the doing it ALONE at HOME. So I put my mask on and went back to my Gym, to my classes and back to my community engagement in fitness and I got my Joy back, my Excitement back and my relationship to exercise feels Positive and Healthy again. It feels great! But I’m really glad that I took the time and did the work to check in with myself to make sure that I am staying healthy both Physically and MENTALLY. Fitness is a lifelong relationship and we have to let it breath, change and grow. Community. It’s the key. It might be the most important thing. It’s also the thing it is easiest to lose in this culture. We all know that there are many components to “Health”. We tend to talk the most about the obvious ones, diet, exercise, medicine. But COMMUNITY should also be at the top of that list. After a challenging couple of years in my personal life I came to realize that community is the piece I’ve been missing. As a working mom it can be hard to feel like there’s time or space for anything else, but it’s so important. I’m so grateful to the people on my journey who remind me that there’s always room for friendship, fun, community, and dancing! Our Trainer @zalie.tshuma challenged us to sprint 100 metres in 30 seconds and it got me thinking about my Fitness Journey. I never liked distance running. I hated it. For years I made myself do it because I was told it was good for me. For years I jogged and jogged because I thought it was what fit people did. Because I thought I should. I hated it so much that it was really hard to make it a routine but I kept pushing through. And after a few years you know what happened… I JUST HATED IT MORE! Only now I had added crazy resentment to the emotional menu for all the hours I’d wasted doing something I HATE! So I stoped running and found the kind of exercise that that I like. That I LOVE. That brings me JOY! I started Weight Training, HIIT Training, boot camp style group training. And now I’m happy and I can commit to my Fitness goals and routines because they make me HAPPY. Exercise you actually don’t like doing is a trap the same way “dieting” is. If you’re forcing yourself to do something you don’t like and don’t feel good about it will never be sustainable. You will never be able to commit long term because it’s depriving you of Joy not creating it. So find out what kind of Fitness practices and Exercise you ENJOY and focus on those. It turns out I don’t mind running AT ALL if it’s a 30 second sprint with a good friend by my side trying to smash our goals together! So that I will do. Because it’s FUN. That’s the trick. “My inspiration is love. I realize how much I love my Life, my Country my Parents.” This is how the incredible Ukrainian artist Eva Holts describes her motivation to create art during the war in her Country. Eva’s apartment was burned down in the early months of the conflict and she was isolated from her parents in another city whose home was hit by shelling. But as she shared her work with me via Zoom from her new home, and talked to me about her process and motivations, I was struck by her ability to keep perspective and find inspiration in the midst of the change and chaos around her. Eva describes herself as someone who has always found artistic inspiration in Dreams. Dreams of sadness and great emotion, where she creates subconscious imaginary worlds that she then translates into art during her waking hours. I found this fascinating because my first gut reaction to her pieces was an intense discomfort but also a kind of familiarity and recognition that I found very exciting and moving. Entirely in keeping with the complex, subconscious worlds and images that she describes. Beautiful Humans❤️ I was overwhelmed and filled with Gratitude after your outpouring of Love, Support and Honestly after my Post yesterday. So many of you bravely shared your own struggles with me. You rewarded my vulnerability with your own and made our community of Humans stronger and more empowered. One of the greatest gifts of being in the public eye is the access to other like minded people like all of you, looking to share, connect and strengthen ourselves and each other.
