Some truth time. I’m sharing this because I get some Peace from knowing others may be going through the same thing and need to read this today. To know they’re not alone. My Eating Disorder has been really bad again these last few months. I feel like I was doing better there for a while. Starting to feel more Love and practicing active care for myself. But then a few new stressors came into my life and I went back down the rabbit hole. Strict dieting and restricting of food groups followed by extreme binges. Preoccupation with exercise and constantly body-checking and comparing myself to others and my old self. Never feeling good enough and not being able to enjoy the Beautiful Life I have because of my obsession with changing my body. And it didn’t just take an emotional toll. It affected my physical health as well. I’m doing better now but I can’t believe that at 42 I’m still trapped in this cycle. That, after almost 35 years of disordered eating and thinking, I am still so vulnerable to these episodes. It is an important reminder to me that Eating Disorders are complex mental health issues. My Life is wonderful. I am so lucky. I have a wonderful Career, supportive Family and Friends, constant positive reinforcement from my incredible Fans and the intellectual understanding and I am a strong and valuable person. But all of that can become powerless in the face of this life long struggle with body image and diet culture. I know that just by acknowledging this I am putting myself back on the path to healing and and getting back on track. I am so much better than I used to be and I know I will continue to heal on a deeper level because I’m committed to finally getting to a place where I don’t equate my value with my weight and where my brain doesn’t fall back on disordered eating when I’m under stress. I believe in my Healing and my Future. And, just in case you need to hear it today, I believe in yours too.❤️

Law and Order is the only TV show I have ever been a true (maybe a bit creepy) fan of. I own the entire 20 season box set of DVD’s and bought a disc drive for my computer because not all of the seasons are streaming. (This is true.) There are important people in my Life to whom I have said the words “I Love you more than Law and Order” as the ultimate expression of my feelings and I actually considered asking Carlos if (as a joke for my family) we could walk down the aisle to the theme song. (Please don’t tell Carlos that.) To try and explain what getting to create my own character for the franchise means to me would be impossible. And then they went and made my Lucy a mixed heritage Guyanese-Canadian and changed her last to name to reflect that in a move that was very healing for an Actor like me who was told to change her own “ethnic” last name all those years ago. It takes literal TEAMS of people at least 2 hours every day to make Actor’s look the way we do on Screen. In real life, I’m makeup free with spots, sun damage, blemishes and hair that is thin and frizzy and NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF! I’m a working Mom who could never in a million years have the time, skill, or quite frankly the desire, to go out in the world looking like my characters. That’s not real life! I wanted to tell all my incredible Friends and Fans in the @shadowhunterstv Family, how sorry I am that I have had to cancel my appearance at #mortalhunters3 in April. I just started a new show that I love that shoots Up North in Canada and unfortunately there was no way to make the schedule work. My incredible bosses here and @ent_events we’re so wonderful and did everything that they could to try and find a way for me to be there but unfortunately, with no direct flights from my location, there was no way to make the timing work. As you all know, I have spent almost my entire life thus far battling the demons of eating disorders, body image and self-esteem. The ridiculous beauty standards of this Culture and the toxic diet, beauty and “wellness” industries have at times entirely robbed me of my self-esteem, my livelihood, my confidence and my Health. I have been on a diet since I was 8 years old. I tried every fad, every cleanse, every plan to restrict food and, at times, I dangerously over-exercised. I was told by family members, friends, colleagues and employers that if I could change my body I would find the acceptance and success that we all want. It’s a Bullshit F#%*ing lie. The Success and Self-Esteem that I have now comes from continuing to hold on to the belief that, no matter what we’re told, we deserve the World and we deserve it in the Bodies we were born in. And I’m SO ANGRY that I have wasted so much of my Life trying to be thinner, trying to be different, putting so much energy into trying to change myself. And the worst part is. I still fight it every day. Why? How? When I am such a bright Human with so much Value. Just like you. It breaks my Heart but it also strengthens my resolve to fight this shit until the battle has been Won. Until our bodies are OURS and OURS ALONE to consider, accept, discuss, care for and Love unconditionally. Our day is coming. I Loved this interview. As a person, I am generally very open about my life and my struggles. As a result, most people who ask me to sit down and talk want to ask me questions about my emotional or political world. Which I love! But what was really special about Jason‘s show is that he focusses on more pragmatic and practical questions about our craft and a life in art and somehow it ended up leading me to some personal revelations that really surprised me. I ended up realizing and sharing things that I wasn’t expecting and that were new to me in a really beautiful way. I hope you’ll listen!
