When I started to recognise and believe that true evil exists, the world became infinitely more scary. And I mean conscious, purposeful, repetitive evil. Not mistakes that happen because we are all human, no one is infallible. And sometimes we make excuses maybe because we cannot or dont want to believe that true evil is a possibility. But even though the world seemed scarier, I then also started to better appreciate the power of love, people (myself included) who are genuinely trying but fail and fuck up because you see them take accountability and make amends. I better appreciate a shared humanity, and the struggle it is to hold on to humanity in a very harsh world. But pretending that evil doesn’t exist, and ignoring it, rationalising it, just allows it to seep into our souls. We cannot let our empathy be weaponised against our fellow human beings.

On a personal level, there have been many things that I’ve actually been quite happy about that I maybe haven’t given enough space to. So i guess this is me practising expansion and how to hold both joy and pain at the same time, in a space/world that conditions us to feel either or. Oh!! I finally figured out my new year resolution: To not lose faith in humanity. lol. because to do so would be to surrender my own. I reject!! Saw a kite in the sky the other day, it was very far away but I managed to capture it on photo. Made me think of this poem by Refaat Alareer which I only discovered after he was martyred. The expectation of a premature death at the hands of the occupying forces is so present, so is the courage, and the hope, and strength of the Palestinian spirit, this kind of spirit I’ve never before witnessed in my life. The kite also made me think of how in 2011 Palestinian children in Gaza broke the Guinness Book of World Records by flying 12,350 kites simultaneously. 🪁🪁🪁 i wonder how many of them are still alive. 2024, justice, liberation, peace, dignity for all. 🍉 “Pray that your people never need the world to save them.
