this was taken around this time last year. i can name 4 times in my life when i have been radicalized. in college around fighting rape culture, in my mid-20s around reproductive rights and queerness and gender, in 2020 around BLM and state violence, and now around p🍉lest!ne. with each lifting of the veil, with each leap in consciousness, with each expanded understanding of what it takes to achieve collective liberation, an old self had to die in order for something new to take its place. as a single parent i have more clarity than ever. i know who i am and i know what i stand for, i understand my place in this world and how to serve my role in it. i have conviction and courage and i am proud to pass that on to my child. i am not afraid to change and i am proud to pass that on to my child. i do not care about being liked i care about being in right relation with myself and with this world and i am proud to pass that on to my child. they tell you motherhood gets you in touch with your softness, i’m here to tell you it also turns you into a knife. i celebrate my baby’s first birthday this week as i grieve the 7,870 (and counting) children martyred in g*za, i grieve the 25,000 (and counting) children who have lost one or both of their parents in the past two months, i grieve for how many times the acronym WCNSF must have been used. we can hold all of it, we absolutely must. if i teach my child nothing else i hope it is that — how to hold it all. photo by bio @ashluka

happy new year, if you have ever paid taxes to the US government then 🍉 is uniquely and directly your problem and it is your responsibility to understand the history between the US and i s r a e l, to keep talking about 🍉, and to not turn away from g a z a. a world of information is available to you, here’s some of what i’m reading/re-reading right now: Freedom is a Constant Struggle (Angela Davis), a classic and must read for anyone who cares about intersectional activism. She importantly names the link between US state violence against black communities and i s r a e l i state violence against 🍉ians. The Hundred Years’ War on 🍉 (Rashid Khalidi), very personal historical account of 🍉 written from a 🍉ian perspective (rare!) beginning with early z i o n i s t correspondence in the late 1800’s. On 🍉 (Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappé), transcripts of convos between them. A little heady but it covers a lot of ground. The book was published in 2018 but the convos are from 2014 and 2013 and it’s really freaky that they essentially predicted what we are seeing right now. Next up are: Ten Myths About I s r a e l (Ilan Pappé) and Rifqa (Mohammed el-Kurd’s debut collection of poetry.) What else are people reading? Do not stop talking about 🍉, do not stop pressuring the US government, keep listening to 🍉ian voices showing us what is happening on the ground, find your entry point into this, do not turn away.
