Kohala, Waimea, Hāmākua, please show up at the meeting if you can. Pōhakuloa, at the base of the mauna needs us all, the waters of Ka’ohe flow from the mountain under her lands, we hear and know well the sound of the bombing and the destruction and desecration to the heart lands of our people. It’s hard to attend but let’s do it for the ‘Āina, for the mauna, for the wai and for each other. See you there. Aloha nui.

Congratulations to the entire team of Standing Above the Clouds especially Jalena Keane-Lee, Amber Espinosa-Jones and Erin Lau who documented our story covering six years. Mahalo to Mauna a Wākea for leading, guiding, protecting and correcting us every step of the way. So very proud of everyone connected to the film. The Bill Nemtin Award for Best Social Impact Documentary, which recognizes the producers of a film in the International Spectrum program that has the greatest potential to create social impact, went to Erin Lau and Amber Espinosa-Jones of Standing Above the Clouds (D: Jalena Keane-Lee | P: Erin Lau, Amber Espinosa-Jones | USA | 2024 | 85 min), chronicling the journey of three Native Hawaiian families as they risk it all to defend their sacred mountain where the Thirty Meter Telescope is set to be built on Mauna Kea. The $10,000 cash prize accompanying the Award will help enable the winning film team to optimize the impact of the documentary through outreach and marketing activities. Jury Statement: “A devastating inside look at a powerful grassroots protest led by women and elders to protect our nature and future from commercialisation and the damning indifference of bystanders. This film is a fight for Indigenous peoples. One that may make you uncomfortable by pointing out your complicity in mother nature’s destruction by sheer inaction. The International Feature Competition Jury is proud to confer Jalena Keane-Lee, a worthy firebrand, the Bill Nemtin Award for her film, Standing Above the Clouds. We applaud her courage to bring a marginalised, Indigenous community and their resounding call for environmental justice to the foreground.”

Mahalo to KAHEA for providing this summary and to the organizations who collaborated to gather your feedback to ensure that our collective voice would be heard. REPOST FROM KAHEA: The Hawaiian-Environmental Alliance Mahalo to YOU for the thousands of emails telling the National Science Foundation (NSF) Board leaders and Director not to fund construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea! UPDATE: Today the NSF Board met in Washington D.C. for a update on the process of determining whether to fund an extremely large telescope (ELT), and if so – which one? The TMT or the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT)? What we learned: – NSF recommended capping total funding for either ELT at $1.6 billion. – The NSF director is convening a panel to provide input to him on whether to advance either of the ELT projects (GMT or TMT) to the final stage. He stressed this is not a decision to construct ANY telescopes. – The new panel will separately assess: (1) progress since preliminary design phase; (2) partnerships and resources; (3) risks and risk mitigation; (4) governance models; (5) scientific complementarity to European ELT; (6) opportunities for early career scientist access; (7) engagement of the public; and, (😎 the impact of supporting a project on agency resources in design, construction, and operation phases. The NSF Director is currently convening this panel, the main question for which is to assess the “readiness” of the ELT projects. The panel is to provide its report in September 2023. Then the NSF Director will update NSF, Congress, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy. We will update as we learn more about these NSF processes and what they mean for Mauna Kea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbXG5bYTzGA (start at 2:05:00 min)
Aloha Waimea and neighboring communities. I’ll be there today! Mahalo.
In between two film screenings in Seattle this week and teaching at schools, Kapulei and members of the film team were able to visit the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience which is featuring several of her photos of elders on Mauna Kea. As our mission is to be a constant presence for the mauna, Standing Above the Clouds and the upcoming Ho’omana exhibit at Mānoa are two ways of assuring that we are fulfilling our heartfelt commitment to Mauna Kea. The mauna is everywhere and we keep rising like a mighty wave.
