This week I had the great honour to participate in the Asian Leadership Conference in Seoul. In my speech, I highlighted the importance of strong social structures that boost equality and women’s participation in working life and decision-making. Another part of my speech focused on geopolitics, the war in Ukraine, and what democracies have to learn from the crises we have witnessed in recent years. There are many things that we as societies can do to build a more equal future for everyone. In Finland and other Nordic countries, affordable and high-quality education for all has been a key element for better and more equal societies, and it has also been crucial to our countries’ competitiveness. From the perspective of women’s participation, there are three things I want to underline. First, good public daycare that is affordable for every family and that prepares children for their educational path. Second, an equal and high-quality education system with free school lunch and after-school activities. And third, parental leave structures that enable women to pursue their careers and fathers to equally take care of their young children. After my speech, I had the opportunity to see the beautiful city of Seoul and to visit Changdeokgung Palace and Secret Garden. Thank you for your hospitality and for a great event!

Jokaisen äänellä on väliä, sillä kyse on Euroopan tulevaisuudesta. 🇪🇺🌹 📸 @jpflander

This week started with an insightful discussions with Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development & Trade Yulia Svyrydenko @svyrydenko.official in Berlin 🇺🇦🇩🇪 ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, hosted by Germany and Ukraine to strengthen international support for recovery, reconstruction, reform, and modernisation of Ukraine. Also glad to join the interesting conversations as well as the board of Yalta European Strategy, a forum for discussing Ukraine’s European future – this time meeting at Deutsche Parlamentarische Gesellschaft. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is not just a regional crisis but a struggle for the principles of sovereignty, democracy, and human rights. It is more important than ever to create innovative and impactful ways to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom and independence. One powerful measure is finding ways to use frozen Russian assets to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and humanitarian efforts. By finding ways for Ukraine to benefit from these funds we can ensure that Ukraine has the resources needed to protect its citizens, rebuild its infrastructure, and maintain its sovereignty against aggression – a battle they are fighting for whole of Europe. 🇪🇺
