Sarah Carter Instagram – A dream came true for me last Sunday.

We met a Blue Whale named Uno… the largest mammal in the world… most rare… gentle giant with a 1000 lbs heart.

It was a cold and cloudy day. We changed our trip from 1pm to 3:30pm. You can only see the blue glow emanate off of their stone grey skin when the sun hits the ocean surface. Managing expectations, the guides acknowledged the gloomy weather, and said a sighting isn’t guaranteed, but if we do see a 30 or 40ft spray in the distance to let them know so we can race towards it and catch its dive… its tail. We were told there were four in the area, but none had shown their tail as of yet. When they reassured we’d likely see dolphins… I knew in my gut I was there for the Blue Whale… they migrate through the California coast two weeks out of the year (some years) and they were here.

This animal has intrigued me throughout my life. To see it now… after so much family healing…after my brother’s passing and the depth of forgiveness, loyalty, and love his transition unearthed… this was yet another sacred connection with natural medicine I didn’t expect.

Uno had an injury… part of his tail was missing so his dives were shallow and he moved slowly… he needed to use his tail to dive for krill… after his first dive they told us he may not show again for another 12 to 20 minutes and depending on how fast he moves, that may have been it.

5 minutes later, the sun came pouring through the clouds and his spout sounded right beside our boat. The blue glow was like nothing I could have imagined. Dave, our guide told us to put away our phones and enjoy it, and that he would take drone shots for us. The beauty was almost overwhelming.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, he showed his tail again! I took out my phone… and again… this time I captured Alice’s joy.

I feel honored to be able to share this experience with you. If you ever have the chance, @newportcoastaladventure is well worth the trip.

“When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

Thank you Uno.

You opened my heart into greatness, slowness, grace, beauty, strength, loyalty, connection, wisdom, and the vast unknown.
