I am here for the history nerds and Tudor geeks among you. Or for those of you who are lucky enough to know one. Hit me up with your history questions on Cameo.
Less than a month now until we announce the first @womensprize for Non-Fiction long list. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying wearing one of the #womensprize t-shirts featuring one of my very favourite fiction writers. #readingwomen #womenwriters #gifted

These stained-glass windows by the Pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones are glorious. Installed in Birmingham Cathedral, St Philip’s, in the late 19th century, they show the Ascension (1885), the Nativity (1887), the Crucifixion (1887) and the Last Judgement (1897). Dwell on that last one. It was finished by Burne-Jones in the year of his death. It shows St Peter with chains in his hands, having unlocked the doors of heaven, a wonderful rainbow rising behind the wings of the archangel Michael, and people, rising from their tombs, and being offered a choice whether to follow the risen, scarred Jesus. The colours are bright and look at the detail of the crown. These exquisite windows are considered some of the finest examples of Burne-Jones’ work. Also: the bit in the first picture just above the men’s heads that is made up of mosaic pieces: it’s normally and will again soon be hidden from view, so enjoy this exclusive glimpse.

This glorious book of women’s voices, edited with such wit and discernment by @sarah.gristwood, is going to be my daily reading this year. It features 1,200 entries from over a hundred women diarists from more than 20 countries, and gives a splendid insight into that most elusive of things: what women in the past were thinking.

Two NEW podcast episodes on #NotJusttheTudors out this week: First, I speak to the brilliant novelist Denise Mina about her take on Savonarola – the late 15th century preacher, prophet, and politician who took on the corruption of the late medieval Catholic Church and despotic rulers like the Medici. He launched his own brand of fundamentalism with his bonfire of the vanities. And I learn from Jennifer Potter about the Jamestown brides: in 1621, a call went out for women in England to become wives for planters in the new colony of Jamestown. They could be paid for in American tobacco. Search Not Just the Tudors wherever you get your podcasts to learn more about these extraordinary lives.
