I first met @sterlinharjo and @taikawaititi about sixteen years ago when I was interning for @birdrunningh2o at Sundance — years after first meeting him when I was 16 on a film panel for my first short film. Through Bird, Sterlin and Taika instantly became my brothers/sisters and over the years they have been two people who called me what I was before long before I would call myself it: a writer, a poet, an artist, a filmmaker — then they invited me to make @rezdogsfx with them and it’s been the most rez boujiest time of my life alongside our fellow writers, producers, cast and crew. To be honored by @peabodyawards alongside them, presented by badass @kali_ko_reis , is pretty unreal — and a testament to their own perseverance and commitment to bringing others up with ‘em. And selfishly, anytime spent with @paulinaalexisofficial @lanefactor and @bobbydues is simply… blessings! 🪶 🐕 love love love [dress: @byellowtail . m/u: @paintedbypetra . shoes: @happy_brain lemme borrow them . jewels: 6th gen family heirlooms . hair: aveda taught me]

our sister became Dr. Dana Arviso this week. eleven years older than me, she’s served as another mother, a mentor, a role model, a compass, a friend and an unwavering ride-or-die. @dana_arviso was the first in our immediate family to graduate from college and is now the first in our family to earn a doctorate. before she applied to grad school, we shared a room one summer (bunk beds and all) and I spent many nights falling asleep to her vocabulary lessons playing on CD. dana normalized college for me. because she did it, there was no question in my mind that it was not only possible, but a given, and I’m forever grateful for her example and the help she continues to give us younger siblings to accomplish our dreams… she has edited countless essays, applications and grant proposals for me and my brothers over the years. ✨ one thing Dana shared with me this week was how hard it was for her to go to college at all, how she missed home and felt guilty for leaving us. i never considered this part of her journey before, and how truly remarkable it is to pave the way for a family the way she did. i admire your persistence, work ethic, care and fun you maintain along the way. so proud! so honored to witness you defend your dissertation this week! love you so much! 🤍🤍🤍 not sure we deserve you but you’re stuck with us.
