I wanted to put some flowers out today, to celebrate the women from my country at Cannes.
How did they get there?
Ask them and you will weep.
It is nothing short of a miracle for an Indian indie film with no institutional, financial or emotional support from the country, to make it this big.
How were the films funded, how difficult was it complete the film in that budget, oh and how did the actors put together the money to fly to Cannes, so they could bring home the prize, that we are so proud of?
Let’s put some skin into this game, if we are feeling so proud.
Otherwise it’s not pride, just shame for not believing in your own storytellers, until the world asks you to look at them.
These women are filling the cracks and saving the building.

Found an old ticket to a show of Peter Brooks The Tragedy of Hamlet, at the Young Vic
September 4th 2001. Bought back a flood of memories and life lived.
On my very first whirlwind trip on a plane outside the country, for the Monsoon Wedding premiere at Venice. After Venice, we were in London for a few days, before heading to TIFF.
Little did we know of the tragedy that would enfold a few days later.
Naseeruddin Sahab was playing Rosencrantz and the Player King in the Peter Brook production and so generously got me a ticket and introduced me to everyone.
Adrian Lester played Hamlet beautifully.
Toshi Tsuchitori accompanied the actors musically with mind boggling Asian wind, string and percussion instruments.
The small multicultural cast, stark decor made the experience unforgettable and intimate.
What I distinctly remember is that the play ended as it began — ”Who’s there?” but this time with Horatio looking at the horizon.
