Without the boarderline suicidal work tendencies of my publicist Doug (@bigfeatpr) and my gymnastic reframing of conversations that were leading to weird savour narratives that denied the agency of black artists in and around the genre, this here record would have reached fewer ears. #throwbackthursday to being nominated for an @naacpimageawards for my role as #sisterrosettatharpe last year. An honourable mention should go out to my frankly obsessive and borderline psychotic level of advocacy, that every fan of the #elvismovie should know how significant SRT was to everything in the movie and to contemporary music as a whole! What a privilege it was to be so relentless in a plethora of prime time cases. What a joy it was to centre black culture in the moments when I was speaking to people that didn’t, but needed to be. It dawned on me how important it was (and is) to me to not just be physically black so they could see me in these places, but culturally black so they could hear the breadth of our minds in these spaces. For my advocacy to be interacting on a level that speaks to the culture and seeks to put it in the spotlight in its entirety and not in piecemeal, was the goal. For my art, I try to reflect my love of it all wholesale, because that is the whole point of being genre fluid. I owe black America my life and sanity, growing up very ethnically isolated in an English village, so this day was a special moment for me that I never dreamed would happen. #gratitude #fortheculture #blackhistorymonth 📸 @mpvinny300

Help me celebrate my big sis from another ms @damalipeterman and her book “Negotiating While Black”, which is OUT NOW!! Available at bookstores and anywhere online!! Now big sis is American, but this is also useful to me because I’m not from here, not from anywhere on this land mass even anywhere in the Americas. If you add to that being raised by a Bajan mother, that means I’m an immigrant, a child of an immigrant, I’m culturally black as well as physically black. There is a MASSIVE difference of experience when adding to each of those categories of demographic. It means not only do I not want to, but I can’t centre a decent amount of WYT culture from here, I can only (if it is authentic to me) reference what WHT culture I was exposed to back in the UK. Of course I want to centre my experience as an artist which is largely a diasporic experience of black culture from UK, US, Africa and the Caribbean. So obviously, I’m so excited to read a book that speaks to me and is especially relevant to all marginalised groups when negotiating the power structures that exist.
