We need to keep violence against women at the forefront of the government’s agenda and identify actions that improve women’s safety with urgency. @davidpocock @bridget.archer @fare.australia @jessicahelenhill & @drmike_salter hosted a briefing this morning about rethinking primary prevention of domestic violence by considering better regulation of social drivers, such as alcohol, gambling and pornography for immediate improvements to women’s safety – as well as working on the longer term and much needed cultural change. #enoughisenough #stopdomesticviolence #primaryprevention #alcoholawareness
Back in Parli! Lots on, from body image and eating disorders, to Indigenous struggles around the World and culture fishing rights, a report on our inquiry into microplastics in our oceans and waterways to legislation on the Net Zero Agency for which I have amendments! #mentalhealth #bodypositivity #eatingdisorders #plasticpollution
26 May is National Sorry Day, an important day for truth telling and for remembering the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families as a result of government policies. It is also the 7th Anniversary of the Uluru Statement from the Heart – the generous invitation from First Nations peoples to walk together for a better future. The Uluru Statement calls for action on voice, treaties and truth-telling and while the Voice Referendum was not successful, we must not let it diminish our determination to do better as individuals and in our communities for and with First Nations peoples.
On #StateofOrigin night NSW women & children are 40% more likely to experience DV. Alcohol & gambling fuel this. Govt needs to tighten regulations on these industries & demand better prevention strategies from sporting codes like NRL #QT #auspol #enoughisenough 🔗 in bio to full response
Restricting access to alcohol deliveries & other measures would help curb alcohol-fuelled violence, yet lobby group influence has slowed down regulatory changes that could make an immediate difference to women’s safety & lower incidence of DV. #auspol Story 🔗in bio
Back in Parli for another big week, keep up to date by following on socials and sign up for my newsletter for a wrap up. A lot of meetings this week, in particular, with the Attorney General @markdreyfusmp and Treasurer @jim_chalmers_mp Another three women have been murdered. 💔#makeitstop #domesticviolence #violenceagainstwomen
Very proud of Lucy @thefreedommovement who first visited me in Warringah to seek support for her petition (🔗in bio) calling for more public hospital beds for mental health and eating disorders for young people. Today Lucy contributed a very welcome youth perspective to the Body Image and Social Media Round Table hosted by @Zoedaniel and @butterflyfoundation , she also raised her concerns and petition at a media conference and with Assistant Minister for Mental Health Emma McBride MP. #mentalhealth #eatingdisorders #bodypositivity
Great day at @manlymarkets2095 lovely to have @ruthdownes1 showing some of her wearable art work highlighting how much waste we have. #redusereuserepairrecycle
The Northern Beaches corridor is one of the most congested transport corridors in Sydney. At our recent Traffic and Transport forum, co-hosted with @michaelreganmp, we looked at recent developments in public transport and what is next for Warringah following the cancellation of the Beaches Link Tunnel. It was great to have all levels of government represented at the forum with @inspiringwomen @crsarahgrattan @good_for_manly @carolyncorriganmayor there and we will continue to work together to provide Warringah with better public transport and infrastructure both now and into the future. At the federal level there are two key priority projects for our area, which I will continue to work on, on behalf of our community.
Researchers say world has enough fossil fuel projects planned to meet demand forecasts to 2050 if governments deliver the #NetZero changes promised to keep world from breaching its climate targets. Meaning no new fossil fuel projects are needed!
The Net Zero Economy Authority Bill establishes the Energy Industry Jobs Plan – a support framework to transition coal and gas-fired power station workers. However, this framework fails to cover over 90% of jobs in this industry. It’s important to provide a just transition and employment opportunities for the many workers and communities who will be impacted as we transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Always a pleasure to catch up with the @knittingnannassyd and talk about ways we can work together to push for stronger #climateaction. The Nannas know that preserving the land, air and water for their grandchildren means no more coal and gas. Keep writing to your MPs to stop fossil fuels and check out the ‘Nannafesto’ if you’d would like to know what the Knitting Nannas are about.
Coming up today in the appropriations hearings, I will be asking the Minister for Defence about opportunities for Australian SMEs to get a fair share of the $165m in grants which will go towards developing sovereign industry capacity. I’ll also be asking the the Attorney General a lot of questions about the funding of legal aid services, especially in the context of supporting women and children’s safety. Check out my websites news tab for my speeches and answers when I get them. #auspol #enoughisenough #defence #sme #smallbusiness
The Net Zero Authority will play an important role in supporting a just transition to renewable energy, but in its current format it is too limited. I moved some amendments to: • Clearly define Net Zero, • Broaden the range of workers who would be supported, • Give the authority the teeth and powers to act with independence, • Ensure there are appropriately qualified people on the board, and • Include a phase out plan for fossil fuel projects. The government did not accept my amendments so I also moved an amendment to suggest the government change the name to the Coal and Gas Fired Worker Transition Authority Bill to more correctly refer to the limited range of workers the bill will support. Otherwise the name of this authority misleads workers in thinking that the government has a jobs plan for them. It’s greenwashing. #netzero #climatechange #energytransition #greenwashing

Here are the bills the government are prioritising this week, including the Net Zero Authority, NDIS and Nature Postive Bills. As always, I welcome your feedback on these bills and any others on the Government list. I will keep you updated on the sitting week ahead as I make sure Warringah’s strong, independent voice is heard in Parliament.

Good to receive an update from the Australian Dental Industry Association who were showcasing new technologies enabling some dentistry services to be conducted outside of the clinic and into residential aged care and remote communities. They also detailed key elements of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule that provides eligible children aged up to 17 years with up to $1095 for routine dental care every two years. (see second pic for more info)

On small business, the government has been big on announcements but small on delivery. Whilst the instant asset write-off was announced in the 2023 Federal Budget, the legislation took months to come to the House and has now been returned twice amended to $30k from the Senate. I strongly support that amendment and urge the government to do so as well instead of playing politics with small businesses! @cosboainsta #smallbusiness #auspol #smallbiz #smallbusinessaustralia
National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme is Now More Than Ever. It is a reminder that the fight for justice and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. Check out some of the great events taking place on the Northern Beaches to mark the week at the link in bio. For events further afield or to learn more about reconciliation visit @reconciliationaus #NRW2024
Eating disorders among young people are increasing and starting younger. Social media’s algorithms and unregulated content can have significant negative impacts on young people’s mental health and body image. Platforms profit from young users, so they should be held accountable when promoting harmful content. #bodypositivity #mentalhealth #eatingdisorders
We are delighted to report that 29 community organisations in Warringah will receive funding of up to $5,000 each to support the wonderful work of their volunteers. This was made possible through the $10 million 2023-24 Volunteer Grant Round, which allows these community organisations apply for funding to buy small equipment for volunteers or reimburse their fuel, transport, or training costs. These grants ensure that organisations are supported to help their volunteers continue to provide valuable services to our community. Some of the worthy recipients in Warringah include @one_meal_northern_beaches, Mosman Netball Club, The Rotary Club of Mosman, and @mwpb_au.
