Amanda Gorman Instagram - So they ban my book from young readers, confuse me with @oprah , fail to specify what parts of my poetry they object to, refuse to read any reviews, and offer no alternatives…Unnecessary #bookbans like these at @bgec_mialks @miamischools are on the rise, and we must fight back 👊🏿If you’d like to help, donate to my fundraiser to support @penamerica as they protect literature, spread the word, and follow great grassroots orgs like @flfreedomread 📒📕💥✊🏿

Amanda Gorman Instagram - ✨ It’s time to welcome 2022 with Amanda Gorman’s (@amandascgorman) energy and her new, never-before-read poem. ✨

“New Day’s Lyric”

May this be the day
We come together.
Mourning, we come to mend,
Withered, we come to weather,
Torn, we come to tend,
Battered, we come to better.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren’t ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.

This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.

What was cursed, we will cure.
What was plagued, we will prove pure.
Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,
Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,
Where we weren’t aware, we’re now awake;
Those moments we missed
Are now these moments we make,
The moments we meet,
And our hearts, once all together beaten,
Now all together beat.

Come, look up with kindness yet,
For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.
We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,
But to take on tomorrow.

We heed this old spirit,
In a new day’s lyric,
In our hearts, we hear it:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
Be bold, sang Time this year,
Be bold, sang Time,
For when you honor yesterday,
Tomorrow ye will find.
Know what we’ve fought
Need not be forgot nor for none.
It defines us, binds us as one,
Come over, join this day just begun.
For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.

Amanda Gorman Instagram - “Be unafraid. We will not be delayed. We will not be masquerade to the tale of a handmaid. We will not let Roe v. Wade slowly fade, because when we show up today, we’re already standing up with the tomorrow we made.” I’ve been thinking a lot about these words I wrote for this poetic performance with @Nowthisnews years ago, and I still believe it with every fiber of my being ✊🏿💛 p.s thanks to @versharma for helping me get this poem out there!

Amanda Gorman Instagram - I wrote this poem after the massacre in Uvalde, Texas. Though it was hard to find the words to write poetry about horrific, unintelligible tragedy, I was moved after a few thoughts I posted here turned into $1 million successfully raised for @everytown for Gun Safety in just 3 days. The one thing I know how to do when times are dark is to write. And that’s what I’ll keep doing, even when told poetry can never make a difference against a gun. As Audre Lorde said, “poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” If this poem speaks to you, speak back—act. A good place to start is following @everytown & texting BOLD to 644-33. To everyone who has already shared and donated, thank you, thank you, thank you. I see you. I love you. I cherish you💛💛💛 @nytopinion

Amanda Gorman Instagram - Still in awe that I had the honor of speaking beside these lovely ladies @unitednations #GeneralAssembly this week as a supporter of @unicef . By supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, we share a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and pursue peace. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told a single poem can’t change the world. What I know is that if you look closely enough, the world IS changing—there are movements and actions waiting for our involvement, spearheaded by future generations. And I can’t imagine anything more worthy of naming, celebrating, writing, believing, and joining. 💛🙏🏿🇺🇳🌍

We must go the distance,
Though this battle is hard and huge,
Though this fight we did not choose,
For preserving the earth isn’t a battle too large
To win, but a blessing too large to lose.

This is the most pressing truth:
That our people have only one planet to call home
And our planet has only one people to call its own.

We can either divide and be conquered by the few,
Or we can decide to conquer the future,
And say that today a new dawn we wrote,
Say that as long as we have humanity,
We will forever have hope.

Amanda Gorman Instagram - Four years ago I wrote my inaugural poem The Hill We Climb. Both when I wrote it and performed it, I did so while continuously reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Coretta Scott King’s legacy, and the place I have in remembering that legacy as a Black woman and poet. When I stepped to the podium at the Capitol Building, I did so looking out in the bright distance at the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. King had recited his renowned I Have a Dream Speech. An odd, exhilarating feeling I still can’t describe took over me as I looked up and out on that fateful January day that changed my life—I felt rooted in that history of our nation, empowered by that shared vision unity, hope, and justice for humanity. I was blown away by how my words reverberated around the world; if anything, it proved to me that we honor King’s dream, by daring to dream big, and by, most importantly, daring to dream together. Only then will the loving fantasies of our better nature transform into reality. Live today, and the days to come, as a promise: the work and fight for the dream persists, and what’s more, it is not just a fight, but fate—that perhaps we are as destined for this time as it is destined for us. What a worthwhile, powerful calling only we can answer. Here with you in the hill and the climb, and whatever light lies beyond, whatever light lies within.
-Amanda
Amanda Gorman Instagram - In all the horror, chaos, and devastation, it is children and families—in Palestine and Israel alike—who bear the bloody burden of a violence they inherited but did not create. Remember at least half of the inhabitants being bombed in Gaza, while currently without food, water, safety or electricity, are children. Remember that Hamas, a brutal, antisemitic terrorist organization, has strategically kidnapped, killed, and assaulted the powerless: countless families and children. The face of war, no matter the parties, is not an aged one, but young, little, and weeping out for us. As @unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell says: “In all wars, it is children who suffer first and suffer most.” If you believe peace and safety is for every child everywhere, donate to @unicef relief efforts. Whatever our religion, politics, nation, or beliefs, we can stand on the side of children, and the small piece of peace we’ve always owed them.

Amanda Gorman Instagram - A year ago today—wow.

I feel so much gratitude for having had that opportunity, and so much love for those who have supported me and my poetry this year. I cannot thank you enough for this life-changing year.

But although we face new—and old—challenges this year, we will face them together. No matter how dark it seems, remember that there is always light, if only we are brave enough to see it, if only we are brave enough to be it. 💛
Amanda Gorman Instagram - 2 years ago today, and still so immensely grateful for the moment of a lifetime 💛

thank you to everyone who has followed my journey before and after this life-changing day 💛

Here’s some of my fav unposted photos from interviews this year (fun fact I can walk on my hands, but post holidays I’m so sleepy whether I’m even walking on my feet is TBD 😂)

#DNC2024
Amanda Gorman Instagram - As a proud Angeleno, the fires that have devastated our county have been heart-breaking. I am so fortunate that while my own home in the Palisades was at risk and had some damage from the fires, I am safe. So many others cannot say the same, and my heart goes out to all of those who have been affected and are rebuilding their lives from ash.

I wrote this poem, “Smoldering Dawn”, to process my own fears and prayers for us as we come together as a community to heal from this trauma. While we mourn what we have lost, we also give thanks to the first responders, firefighters and civilians who have fought so tirelessly to combat these fires and ensure the safety of so many.

To honor them, I’m releasing this poem as a fundraiser for the California Fire Foundation, which is offering support and aid to firefighters families, as well as those who have been impacted by the fires. 💛 Give what you can, help who you can, stay safe, and this too we shall conquer.
Amanda Gorman Instagram - 🚨BIG NEWS!!🚨 I wrote A New Day’s Lyric both to celebrate the new year & honor both the hurt & the humanity of the last one. To pay my words forward, ➡️I’m raising funds for the International Rescue Committee⬅️ (IRC) @rescueorg whose response to the coronavirus pandemic and humanitarian crises provide lifesaving programs to vulnerable communities worldwide 🌎❤️. Instagram has already pledged $50,000! Let’s take donations even higher. You can give at the link, and/or share the fundraiser —even a little goes a long way. I’m always shy to quote my own poems, but I believe it in my bones when I say: Come, look up with kindness yet, for wherever we come together, we will forever overcome 💛🙏🏿.

Amanda Gorman Instagram - When I learned of the opportunity to write a poem for @wickedmovie, I felt so honored, as well as nervous since it’s such an iconic phenomenon beloved by so many around the world. The musical interrogates the forces of good and evil, and more importantly, how we arrive there, and how we can push beyond categorizing “different” as “bad.” As a Black girl, I resonate deeply with the experience of being the Other in a room. But Wicked reminds us at our hearts that the power of connection, friendship, and compassion is the true magic that enables healing upon this earth. I hope you all enjoy my new poem “Do Us Good” inspired by the beautiful film that is Wicked! 💚💖🫧✨

Amanda Gorman Instagram - Like many authors, I was heartbroken when @scholastic Book Fair announced that it has created a separate diversity book case, “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice,” which permits schools to decide whether those books will be accessible at their fairs. My book, Change Sings, a #1 NYT best-seller illustrated by the award-winning Loren Long, was one of these books.

It took me a while to sit in what felt like a betrayal. As an elementary student, for weeks I’d save every single penny I had for the Scholastic Book Fair, because it felt like a free place that invited me to explore and choose for myself what books I wanted to read, what worlds I wanted to access, what stories I could finally find myself reflected within. It was one of the magical moments that made me want to write books for children in the first place.

But the true depth of my disappointment came when I read about all the amazing, impactful books—predominantly by Black, brown, queer, and disabled authors—that won’t make it into the schools because there is now a clear pathway for prohibiting them from general access. I understand that Scholastic made this decision in response to the skyrocketing rise of book bans, which complicates making some books available. But self-censoring the stories we need now more than ever is NOT the answer. And it certainly doesn’t feel like sharing every story—it feels like treating our stories as separate but equal.

As weird as it felt to post about something as simple as books in these chaotic and violent times, I truly believe that stories are where we access each other’s humanity in times of darkness. Scholastic, there are more options than this. I implore you to strategize a new way forward that does not prohibit or punish the stories written by diverse voices. And I also ask anyone reading this who agrees with me—help us fight this story at its root—legislation—by visiting pen.org/action @penamerica for more action we all can take for these stories we love 💛📚

Amanda Gorman - 375.2K Likes - ✨ It’s time to welcome 2022 with Amanda Gorman’s (@amandascgorman) energy and her new, never-before-read poem. ✨

“New Day’s Lyric”

May this be the day
We come together.
Mourning, we come to mend,
Withered, we come to weather,
Torn, we come to tend,
Battered, we come to better.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren’t ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.

This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.

What was cursed, we will cure.
What was plagued, we will prove pure.
Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,
Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,
Where we weren’t aware, we’re now awake;
Those moments we missed
Are now these moments we make,
The moments we meet,
And our hearts, once all together beaten,
Now all together beat.

Come, look up with kindness yet,
For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.
We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,
But to take on tomorrow.

We heed this old spirit,
In a new day’s lyric,
In our hearts, we hear it:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
Be bold, sang Time this year,
Be bold, sang Time,
For when you honor yesterday,
Tomorrow ye will find.
Know what we’ve fought
Need not be forgot nor for none.
It defines us, binds us as one,
Come over, join this day just begun.
For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.

Amanda Gorman - 219.3K Likes - “Be unafraid.

Amanda Gorman - 192.4K Likes - I wrote this poem after the massacre in Uvalde, Texas.

Amanda Gorman - 184.5K Likes - Still in awe that I had the honor of speaking beside these lovely ladies @unitednations #GeneralAssembly this week as a supporter of @unicef . 💛🙏🏿🇺🇳🌍

EXCERPT FROM “AN ODE WE OWE: A POEM FOR HUMANKIND”

We must go the distance,
Though this battle is hard and huge,
Though this fight we did not choose,
For preserving the earth isn’t a battle too large
To win, but a blessing too large to lose.

This is the most pressing truth:
That our people have only one planet to call home
And our planet has only one people to call its own.

We can either divide and be conquered by the few,
Or we can decide to conquer the future,
And say that today a new dawn we wrote,
Say that as long as we have humanity,
We will forever have hope.

Or we can decide to conquer the future,
And say that today a new dawn we wrote,
Say that as long as we have humanity,
We will forever have hope.

Caption : Still in awe that I had the honor of speaking beside these lovely ladies @unitednations #GeneralAssembly this week as a supporter of @unicef . 💛🙏🏿🇺🇳🌍 EXCERPT FROM “AN ODE WE OWE: A POEM FOR HUMANKIND” We must go the distance, Though this battle is hard and huge, Though this fight we did not choose, For preserving the earth isn’t a battle too large To win, but a blessing too large to lose. This is the most pressing truth: That our people have only one planet to call home And our planet has only one people to call its own. Amanda Gorman - 175.1K Likes - Four years ago I wrote my inaugural poem The Hill We Climb.

Amanda Gorman - 138.2K Likes - As a proud Angeleno, the fires that have devastated our county have been heart-breaking.

I’m always shy to quote my own poems, but I believe it in my bones when I say: Come, look up with kindness yet, for wherever we come together, we will forever overcome 💛🙏🏿.

Amanda Gorman - 130K Likes - When I learned of the opportunity to write a poem for @wickedmovie, I felt so honored, as well as nervous since it’s such an iconic phenomenon beloved by so many around the world. 💚💖🫧✨

Please consider donating to and sharing this fundraiser for @unicef which is providing emergency aid to children and families on the ground in the region. Amanda Gorman - 99.5K Likes - Like many authors, I was heartbroken when @scholastic Book Fair announced that it has created a separate diversity book case, “Share Every Story, Celebrate Every Voice,” which permits schools to decide whether those books will be accessible at their fairs.
