Jane was born Martha Jane Blankenship & raised in Rutherfordton, NC. An all-state basketball center & school newspaper editor, she graduated from Western Carolina University in 1957. Her career as an English teacher allowed her to see Lee Edwards become Asheville High and St Eugene's become Asheville Catholic Community School, with stints at North Buncombe HS & Independence HS in Charlotte. While at Providence HS, she even coached a student to a National Debate Championship. Being a teacher was not just a job: it was who she was to her core. Whether teaching her famous "point of view" class, helping a student write a speech or a headline for the newspaper, or giving kids their first taste of Shakespeare, she lived to help people learn how to learn. She was oft widowed. Art Young, Bob Yelton, Barry Goodwin, and Bobby Lee Sudduth all shared time and love with her in this life. She also loved the fur-babies she got to have, always feeling incomplete without a devoted dog by her side. But most of all, she was a loving sister & mother. Which doesn’t sound all that remarkable — until I mention that she had been a victim of domestic partner abuse up until the year before her death,” “Scandal”s’ Bellamy Young writes in a guest column for the L.A. Times. “Mom hadn’t exactly been lucky in love. She had already buried four husbands (cancer, heart attack, COPD, cancer) by the time she met This Guy, who doesn’t deserve to be named here. But Mom never wanted to be alone. It was her deepest fear. She would get the look I get when I talk about sharks. She powered through her lack of computer skills and met This Guy online about eight years ago. We would joke that she had to import him from Tennessee because there were no good men left in western North Carolina. It was a long-distance relationship at first: She would cook for him at the house I’d helped her buy outside of Asheville, and drive to Tennessee to go to church with him. Eventually, he brought his two cats and moved into Mom’s house. When I saw a picture of me from my birthday this year (in February), I realized I was farther away from myself than I knew. My friend Fay had just read Chris Palmer's book #BrainEnergy & was talking abt giving a modified ketogenic diet a try for a month. I said I'd try it with her. I started to have a little more energy... (Mind you, I've been vegan for forever, so all my protein sources have carbs in them: it was really just low carb for me.) Then I decided in March to try to start getting those 150 "intensity minutes" per week that I hear people talk abt. I found out I liked it. 🤯 I've never been in any way athletic: no team sports, no solo sports, even when I was dancing, it was a bit of a slog. But now I'm celebrating a 382 day streak of making my step goal (at least 5 miles/10K steps a day) & nearing 9 months straight of making my intensity minutes every week. (hello, running 😲🥰🎉) So. Who knows what's to come, but I just wanted to claim this outloud, since I am in no way a self-starter. 😄 I'm grateful that I've turned up so far. If you're on a similar journey, I'm sending you love- & I believe in you! I'm grateful to @hubermanlab who always edifies & inspires me (abt sports & nutrition, yes, but also SO many other fields) & to my little @garmin #Vivosmart which is humble, yet the exact right fitness partner for me. 🤓 (this is not at all an ad) Hope tonight is gentle on each of you. Hug all your people extra close tonight. 💔❤️ Jane Goodwin passed away peacefully in Asheville on Dec 26th, the day after her favorite day of the year. Jane was born Martha Jane Blankenship & raised in Rutherfordton, NC. An all-state basketball center & school newspaper editor, she graduated from Western Carolina University in 1957. Her career as an English teacher allowed her to see Lee Edwards become Asheville High and St Eugene's become Asheville Catholic Community School, with stints at North Buncombe HS & Independence HS in Charlotte. While at Providence HS, she even coached a student to a National Debate Championship. Being a teacher was not just a job: it was who she was to her core. Whether teaching her famous "point of view" class, helping a student write a speech or a headline for the newspaper, or giving kids their first taste of Shakespeare, she lived to help people learn how to learn. She was oft widowed. Art Young, Bob Yelton, Barry Goodwin, and Bobby Lee Sudduth all shared time and love with her in this life. She also loved the fur-babies she got to have, always feeling incomplete without a devoted dog by her side. But most of all, she was a loving sister & mother. She is survived by her sister & brother-in-law Norma & Jim Andrews of Spindale, NC, & her daughter Amy Young of NYC. Hug all your people extra close tonight. 💔❤️ Jane Goodwin passed away peacefully in Asheville on Dec 26th, the day after her favorite day of the year. Jane was born Martha Jane Blankenship & raised in Rutherfordton, NC. An all-state basketball center & school newspaper editor, she graduated from Western Carolina University in 1957. Her career as an English teacher allowed her to see Lee Edwards become Asheville High and St Eugene’s become Asheville Catholic Community School, with stints at North Buncombe HS & Independence HS in Charlotte. While at Providence HS, she even coached a student to a National Debate Championship. Being a teacher was not just a job: it was who she was to her core. Whether teaching her famous “point of view” class, helping a student write a speech or a headline for the newspaper, or giving kids their first taste of Shakespeare, she lived to help people learn how to learn. She was oft widowed. Art Young, Bob Yelton, Barry Goodwin, and Bobby Lee Sudduth all shared time and love with her in this life. She also loved the fur-babies she got to have, always feeling incomplete without a devoted dog by her side. But most of all, she was a loving sister & mother. When I saw a picture of me from my birthday this year (in February), I realized I was farther away from myself than I knew. My friend Fay had just read Chris Palmer's book #BrainEnergy & was talking abt giving a modified ketogenic diet a try for a month. I said I'd try it with her. I started to have a little more energy... (Mind you, I've been vegan for forever, so all my protein sources have carbs in them: it was really just low carb for me.) Then I decided in March to try to start getting those 150 "intensity minutes" per week that I hear people talk abt. I found out I liked it. 🤯 I've never been in any way athletic: no team sports, no solo sports, even when I was dancing, it was a bit of a slog. But now I'm celebrating a 382 day streak of making my step goal (at least 5 miles/10K steps a day) & nearing 9 months straight of making my intensity minutes every week. (hello, running 😲🥰🎉) So. Who knows what's to come, but I just wanted to claim this outloud, since I am in no way a self-starter. 😄 I'm grateful that I've turned up so far. If you're on a similar journey, I'm sending you love- & I believe in you! I'm grateful to @hubermanlab who always edifies & inspires me (abt sports & nutrition, yes, but also SO many other fields) & to my little @garmin #Vivosmart which is humble, yet the exact right fitness partner for me. 🤓 (this is not at all an ad) Hope tonight is gentle on each of you. My friend Fay had just read Chris Palmer’s book #BrainEnergy & was talking abt giving a modified ketogenic diet a try for a month. I said I’d try it with her. I started to have a little more energy… (Mind you, I’ve been vegan for forever, so all my protein sources have carbs in them: it was really just low carb for me.) My friend Fay had just read Chris Palmer’s book #BrainEnergy & was talking abt giving a modified ketogenic diet a try for a month. I said I’d try it with her.
