Beverly Joubert Instagram - We didn't know it at the time this photo was captured, but this special leopard – her eyes alive with curiosity and wonder – would have a massive impact on our lives and careers. This is Legadema, the star of our film Eye of the Leopard. We spent over three years filming and documenting her growth from wide-eyed cub to confident huntress. She let us into her secretive world and helped fuel our passion to protect Africa's threatened wild cats. Although Legadema is no longer with us, her legacy lives on. This #WorldWildlifeDay, we're reflecting on the special time we spent with her, and renewing our dedication to protect our planet's precious wild species and spaces.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Leopards hold a very special place in our hearts. Decades spent documenting these big cats in the wild has offered us a glimpse into their ultra-secretive worlds, a tiny window into the mystery and wonder of these elusive animals.

From the relative safety of a broken tree trunk, this leopardess carefully scanned her surroundings, her stare unwavering as she searched for potential prey in the dusk. We feel an enormous sense of privilege for every moment we get to share with these cats. This International Leopard Day, we’re reminded of their majesty and the urgent need to protect them.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - So much hope rests on those wobbly legs. It’ll take at least 10 years for this elephant to reach maturity. Ten long years where the youngster may encounter shrinking habitats, altered landscapes, and malicious humans. If the calf makes it, he’ll have an important role to play in helping nurture the next generation of elephants – a generation that may face even greater threats. These giants need safe space to roam in protected landscapes where they can live in harmony with humans. ⁣
⁣
@DereckJoubert and I recently hosted a number of speaking events in Florida where our goal was to share the urgent need to protect wild spaces and species and safeguard them for future generations. An African savannah without elephants is something we cannot fathom. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Cheetahs are dedicated mothers. Young cubs are particularity susceptible to attacks from rival predators and it’s mom’s job to keep them safe. She must be both provider and protector, a role that she takes on wholeheartedly. Happy #MothersDay to all the incredible moms out there.
Beverly Joubert Instagram - Welcome to our next iLCP Takeover — iLCP Senior Fellow @beverlyjoubert

“Hi all, I’m Beverly Joubert (@BeverlyJoubert), a wildlife photographer and National Geographic Explorer-at-Large. I’m thrilled to be taking over as guest editor for @ilcp_photographers this week to share the remarkable landscapes and magnificent wildlife of Botswana, an area that @DereckJoubert and I have called our second home for many years.

Water is the lifeblood of Botswana's north, and each year as floodwaters from the Angolan Highlands spill onto the flatlands, they saturate the parched soil and transform the landscape, creating the world's largest freshwater inland delta. Elephants are almost synonymous with the Okavango. These enormous animals carve pathways through the floodplains as they trace its snaking channels and spillways.

Massive mammals have massive hydration needs and elephants must drink at least 150 litres of water a day to sustain their huge bodies. As herds trek through the drenched landscape, they forge trails in their wake creating passage for other animals that need to navigate through the dense reeds and thick vegetation. Myriad species depend on the services of these grey giants and even though their populations remain stable in the Delta, poaching and habitat loss still pose a significant threat to the future of this iconic species.” -@beverlyjoubert

Join us this week to learn all about Beverly’s work in the Okavango Delta!

Beverly Joubert Instagram - There's a special elegance and grace reserved for giraffes. That silhouette, unmistakable against a golden sky, floats with purpose and poise across the savannah. Their unique form has awed visitors to Africa for centuries, but like so many other species, giraffes are in trouble. Populations have plummeted by 40% in just the last 30 years, and there are now fewer than 70,000 mature individuals left in the wild. We know what must be done to save them: prioritise conservation efforts, safeguard habitats, address threats like illegal hunting. If we don't act now, we stand to lose these iconic creatures forever.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - “Driven by an urge that cannot be ignored, these zebras journey over 250 kilometres each year from the grasslands of the Okavango Delta to the expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the south.

Their migration begins in November/December and is triggered by the rains which transform the bleach-white salt pans into a seemingly endless mirror-like plain. The opportunity to photograph these striking animals from the air, set against the vast spread of the shimmering flatlands, is a true privilege – and one that wouldn't have been possible before the turn of the century.

In the late 1960s, veterinary fences were erected across much of the country to avoid the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, cutting off ancient migratory routes. When the fences were moved in the mid-2000s, conservationists were startled to see the zebras returning to their migratory patterns. It's a stark reminder of the impact we can have on the natural world and the resilience of wildlife in ever-changing landscapes.” - @beverlyjoubert

Beverly Joubert Instagram - I've always been in awe of the sheer power and presence of elephants. While spending time with these giants you learn to appreciate the delicate application of that immense strength. A carefully directed blast of water from a trunk provides relief from the scorching African sun, while pillar-like legs are used to dig into the sand when rivers run dry. Their movements are purposeful and intricate fuelled by an intelligence and social cohesion that we are yet to fully understand. Although, we don't speak their language and can only deduce the motivations for their behaviour, we can respect and admire their sentience. And do everything we can to protect them.⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Lions spend much of their time dozing, reserving their energy for nighttime pursuits. Watching them laze in the heat of the day, often splayed out in languid bliss, it's easy to forget just how powerful and formidable these cats can be when the situation calls for it. These two males—one young and inexperienced, the other a dominant force—clashed over territorial rights. Although the skirmish was brief (as these disagreements often are) it was explosive: teeth bared and muscles tensed, the cats wrestled in the swirling dust, their growls and snarls breaking the stillness of the evening. The dispute was settled quickly, the older victor laying claim to the turf while the youngster was forced to skulk away in defeat. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Following a territorial tussle with a rival male, this dominant duo basked in the last light of the day, confident that they had successfully defended their turf. In a highly competitive and harsh environment like theirs, the key to survival often lies in alliances. The challenges of accessing resources, securing territory, and achieving genetic success are amplified when faced alone. Male lion coalitions are frequently forged between siblings, but they can also develop between unrelated cats, out of necessity and mutual advantage. The daily struggles of lion life become much more manageable when shared.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - While some mammal societies are governed by force and aggression, these traits do not always define leadership. In elephant herds, it's the most knowledgeable and experienced females that guide the group, and they usually carry out this role with patience and tenderness. Years of foraging have taught these leaders where to access water and food and it's their job to lead the rest of the family to these vital resources. Without these wise giants to provide stability and calm, elephant societies could crumble.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - For social animals, wisdom and strength often come from matriarchs. In elephant societies, the most knowledgeable and experienced females take up leadership roles, using their years of wisdom to guide the rest of the herd to food or water. Their importance to the stability of the group is immeasurable. Without them, the intricate bonds that hold the herd together may crumble.⁣⁣

On South Africa’s National Women’s Day, we honour the powerful female leaders who guide their herds through challenges and protect future generations – both in the animal kingdom and in our own lives.⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Standing tall. In the fiery glow of a Kenyan sunset, these giraffes kept their eyes fixed on the horizon. Long-distance surveying is a perk that comes with being Africa's tallest mammals, but even giraffes are prone to attacks from opportunistic predators. As darkness sets in, the herd must find a safe spot to settle where they're able to scan for approaching threats. Giraffes rarely graze or travel on their own, preferring to move in herds that provide safety in numbers and more eyes sweeping their landscape for lurking predators. ⁣

Giraffe societies are about more than just safety though. Herds are cooperative and interdependent and, much like elephants, older matriarchs play a vital role imparting knowledge to the next generation. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Some years ago, we were fortunate to spent time with this gorgeous female leopard named Fig as she raised her cub on the plains of the Maasai Mara. A frightening clash with lions left Fig wary of rival cats, so we often found her in the safety of the treetops resting in the boughs and occasionally using her lofty vantage point to launch aerial attacks on prey. This wisdom was passed on her cub, and the youngster quickly learned to use trees to her advantage. Vital knowledge that she'll no doubt need one day to survive.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - The chaos of the crossing. Each year, millions of ungulates charge across the East African plains in search of fresh grazing grounds, trekking across vast savannahs and weaving their way through predator-rich woodlands. Perhaps their greatest challenge involves negotiating multiple river crossings where steep banks, opportunistic crocodiles and dangerous, churning waters sometimes combine. Predators like lions have learnt to take advantage of these natural obstacles, striking in the midst of the frenzy, often picking off the weaker members of the herd. It can be tough to watch these moments, but it's a reminder of the delicate balance of life in the wild, where savagery and survival are deeply intertwined.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Trees are more than just resting spots for leopards; they provide cover from danger and a safe place to stash a kill where it's beyond the reach of eager scavengers. Beverly Joubert Instagram - Motherhood in the animal kingdom is a testament to resilience, teaching, and unwavering care – every lick, nuzzle, and watchful gaze shapes the future of the next generation. This serval mom's gentle grooming helps keep her kitten's fur clean and free from parasites but it also reinforces the powerful bond between mother and offspring – a connection that can be felt across multiple species in the wild. Servals may not get as much of the limelight as their larger feline relatives, but these elegant, long-legged cats play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. With their incredible hunting skills and success rate, they help control populations of rodents and other small mammals. This wide-eyed kitten will grow up to be an important part of a delicate web of life that deserves to be protected.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - A lion's roar commands attention. Specially adapted vocal folds allow these cats to muster up a reverberating bellow that can be heard from kilometres away. If you're close enough, you'll feel the vibrations of the call rolling through your bones and likely triggering the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up straight. It's a sound we've come to love and appreciate during our time documenting these apex predators. Sadly, we have also witnessed this iconic sound fading from more and more corners of the African wild. Beverly Joubert Instagram - The lure of a well-positioned vantage point usually proves irresistible to cheetahs – they are drawn to termite mounds or fallen trees as though driven by an innate instinct. In the stillness of the savannah, these two brothers clambered onto a tree stump to survey their vast kingdom. For male cheetahs, forming coalitions greatly increases their chances of survival. It means extra eyes to scan for threats and an increased chance of success when on the hunt. Their bond is unbreakable, a partnership forged by survival and trust in a world where every day is a test of resilience.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Battles between lions and buffaloes are unpredictable, brutal and intense. Adult male African buffaloes can weigh over 900 kilograms and they are notoriously belligerent. It takes careful coordination, acute timing and immense courage for lions to successfully hunt these massive animals. Often when the fight appears to be nearing its conclusion, a final show of strength from the buffalo – sometimes backed by the rest of the herd – can swing the odds in its favour. Sadly, for this bull, his resilience was overpowered and the lions succeeded.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Every moment we spend with elephants we're reminded of their intelligence and the intricate complexity of their social connections. The gentle touch of a trunk can communicate so much. Elephants fulfil an integral role in African ecosystems, not just as landscape engineers that aid other species, but as icons with which it's difficult not to become deeply attached. Over and above their obvious physical stature, they exude an emotional and intellectual depth and complexity expressed through behaviours that mirror our own human emotions and social bonds. They are an irreplaceable keystone species, and when we lose that presence, the void is vast. Some estimates tell us that Africa's elephants have declined by 77%, on average, in the past five decades. It's impossible to comprehend the full extent of that loss. But we know that the world is a poorer place without them.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - For lion cubs, a fallen tree is a jungle gym that provides hours of entertainment. We feel privileged to be able to watch these incredible cats in their natural habitat, learning the ropes and testing their limits; however, encounters like this can be bittersweet. Lions have been eradicated from much of their former range and are heavily threatened by habitat loss, poaching and human-wildlife conflict. But there is hope. Our Big Cats Initiative (run by @GreatPlainsFoundation) helps fund vital lion conservation projects, and through collaborative efforts, we hope to give these iconic predators a fighting chance.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - This cub was very eager to emulate his dad, but he'll have to wait until he's a bit bigger before quenching his thirst at this pool. Lions get much of the moisture they need from the blood of their prey so they don't need to drink daily, but will readily do so when water is available. On Kenya's savannahs – like in many African ecosystems – water shapes the landscape and regulates animal migration patterns. It can be both a source of sustenance and a perilous obstacle for the species that traverse these vast wild lands.⁣

She's still too young to take part in the chase, but she'll watch keen-eyed from the sidelines learning the skills she'll need to one day fend for herself. As few as 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild today, and these big cats occupy a meagre 9% of their historic range. Beverly Joubert Instagram - A lion in his prime – his dark mane a marker of his dominance – parades across a plain, honey-hued eyes fixed on the horizon. It’s frightening to consider that, according to some research, in just five decades Africa's lion populations have declined by over 75%. Hunting and habitat loss are the primary drivers of the decline, which puts these big cats firmly in the extinction crosshairs. For healthy gene flow and to help protect lions from hunting, these cats need vast areas in which to roam, something that is becoming scarcer as human development advances and critical habitats shrink. If we hope to continue seeing these iconic cats striding across the grasslands, we need to put every effort into protecting their habitats and reducing both legal and illegal hunting.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Almost like a bird perched in its nest, this cheetah chose the top of a dense bush as a vantage point to survey her surroundings. Unlike many of their feline kin, cheetahs are weak climbers and prefer to spend the bulk of their time on the ground where their semi-retractable claws are perfectly suited for extreme acceleration. These slender cats will, however, clamber onto low branches or termite mounds in order to get a better view of the landscape.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - The job of conserving our planet's threatened species is never complete. While we celebrate every success, and praise the dedicated men and women who fight for our future, we must also acknowledge the monumental challenge that lies ahead if we hope to achieve sustainable solutions to the problems facing the natural world.

So, as the sun sets for the final time in 2023, we're renewing our commitment to safeguarding the planet and welcoming the challenges that the new year might bring. ⁣There is much to be done, but through collaboration and hard work, we can succeed.⁣⁣ ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Beneath clouds swollen with the promise of rain, a herd of elephants trek across an open plain in Kenya. In our years documenting Africa's remarkable wild species, we've always been inspired by the intelligence, sentience and unity of elephants. Sadly, despite their iconic status as the world's largest land mammals, elephant numbers (like so many others) are dwindling. This Endangered Species Day we face grim statistics: wildlife populations have declined by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018 and more than 41,000 of the species on the IUCN Red List are threatened with extinction. Although these figures make for dire reading, we have not lost hope. Much like elephants that show resilience and strength in the face of difficult challenges, we too must unite and find effective solutions to live alongside wild species and give them the space they need to thrive.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Elephants are methodical eaters. With purposeful resolve and a surprisingly degree of dexterity, they’ll carefully dig up rhizomes and break apart vegetation to get at tasty seeds and fruit. These massive mammals consume huge quantities of food each day and often travel long distances to reach their foraging grounds or reliable water sources. Along the way, they spread seeds through their dung and, perhaps knowingly, alter entire landscapes as they contribute to the renewal of plant life across vast distances.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - It’s truly an honour for @DereckJoubert and I to receive the inaugural Naphtali S. Tande Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pridelands Wildlife Film Festival held earlier this year in Kenya. The festival supports and celebrates emerging and established filmmakers in wildlife, conservation and environmental filmmaking. It also helps to build awareness and spread wonder about the natural world.

For threatened wild species to stand a chance at survival, their stories must be told. It’s always been our goal to not only document nature’s incredible narratives, but to share those stories with the world. Thank you to @pwffest for this honour and we hope our work can inspire a new wave of conservation and advocacy.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Copy/paste. In almost perfect symmetry, these zebras lined up at the water's edge to quench their thirst. At first glance they may appear identical, like monochromatic duplicates, but like all zebras, each individual has its own unique stripe pattern – an intricate artwork of back and white brushstrokes that separates it from the rest of the herd. Some theories suggest these unique coats help the animals identify one another and may offer an explanation, at least in part, for why these animals have stripes in the first place – a question that researchers have struggled to definitively answer for as long as they've been trying. Whatever the reasons for their iconic patterned fur, it certainly makes for dazzling displays when herds gallop in unison across the savannah.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - There's an undeniable curiosity that beams in the eyes of lion cubs. While the rest of the pride dozily looked off in different directions, this cub fixed his focus on my lens, his oversized ears perked up, attentively listening to every click of the shutter. At this age, he's still learning about his surroundings, establishing what's worthy of his attention, and processing the difference between food and foe. Over time, he'll become less intrigued by stimuli that he encounters regularly, but lions never completely shed their cub-like curiosity and even adults are known to play on occasion, like ageing house cats that can't resist a ball of wool.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Concealed in the undergrowth, this leopard took a brief moment to relax, her eyes and ears intensely tuned to the possibility of approaching danger. Leopards lead mostly solitary lives, typically dictated by food, courtship and the harsh demands of survival. Secretive and shy, it's a life lived out largely beyond the reach of human eyes. Yet, despite their elusive nature, resilience and adaptability, leopards are still threatened by habitat loss and conflict with humans. Their populations have diminished by about 30% in the last two decades and they are now extinct in many territories they once called home.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - He may be a dominant male, but this lion turned tail when faced with five well-horned buffaloes. There's an age-old rivalry between these two species, and with that seems to come mutual respect. Aware that without the element of surprise or the support of the pride, standing up to this formidable wall of bovine strength would be foolish, the lion made a wise and hasty retreat. His time may come, though. When one of the buffaloes is weakened by age or injury or strays too far from the herd, the lion and his pride will not be far away.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - In typical feline fashion, this lion cub looked very smug at having successfully clambered up a tree trunk, posing on a forked branch like a victor on a podium. At this age, tree climbing is still a viable pastime. As this cat grows older and more muscular, he'll trade his finesse and agility for brawn and brute strength. Adult lions are capable of climbing trees, and in some parts of Africa have made a habit of it, but generally these heavy cats are more comfortable on solid ground.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - In large swamps like Botswana's Okavango Delta, reeds grow rapidly, clogging up channels, building silt and ultimately damming the water. That's where species like hippos come in. These mega herbivores use their bulk to ensure that pathways through the aquatic vegetation remain open allowing other animals to access these areas and maintaining the delicate delta ecosystem. Without hippos, landscapes like the Okavango Delta would transform into something else entirely.⁣

As we prepare for another year of documenting our planet's remarkable species and fighting for their protection, we're once again taking our inspiration from elephants. Elephants are more than just iconic animals; they are the lifeblood of the ecosystems they inhabit, the gentle guardians of the wilderness. Yet, they face unimaginable threats from poaching and habitat destruction.⁣

Today, let's honour their wisdom and sentience, and commit to protecting their future. Every action counts in the fight to preserve these magnificent giants and the wild spaces they call home. Their survival is our responsibility – let's ensure they thrive for generations to come⁣.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - All aboard! It’s not uncommon to see giraffes accompanied by a sizeable entourage of oxpeckers. These resourceful birds pluck off parasites embedded in the giraffe’s skin, so the hitchhikers are usually tolerated in exchange for this vital cleaning service. The relationship is not entirely symbiotic though. Oxpeckers have also been recorded pecking at open wounds to feast on blood, which can slow the healing process putting large mammals at risk of infection. If the birds become too much of an irritation, a flick of the neck should send them fluttering away … temporarily, at least.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Elephant calves spend many hours during their formative years engaged in playful 'wrestling matches' with their siblings. These trunk flailing, ear-flapping spells are truly a joy to watch and we feel privileged to be able to bear witness to these fleeing moments that help shape young calves in vital ways. In elephant herds, knowledge is passed on through generations. Where to forage, the sometimes tricky tasks of separating friend from foe, or how to navigate the intricate web of relationships within the herd are all lessons that get passed down through the actions and behaviours of senior members of the herd. Calves gain the knowledge they need to survive in the wild through these shared experiences.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Sunday mood. Lions are not avid tree-climbers – their size and heavy set bodies are not ideally equipped for leaping through the branches. Like all cats, however, they can't seem to resist the urge to investigate and explore, especially if their efforts end with a comfy snooze. Young cats are more adept at scaling the branches and this one seemed to be channeling his inner leopard as he rested, draped over a branch in a state of total relaxation. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - 'Wait for me!' Almost every moment in a young cheetah's life is an opportunity to learn and sharpen the skills that will one day be so vital to its survival. After watching his mother scale the gnarled trunk of a fallen tree, this youngster was determined to follow suit. For mom, the climb is more than just a game. Beverly Joubert Instagram - When zebra herds run as one, they become a dazzling canvas of black and white brushstrokes, a solid moving mass of monochrome. For predators in pursuit, it can be almost impossible to single out an individual in the melee and this "safety in numbers" strategy is often successful for the zebras. Sadly, migratory herds are getting smaller as habitat loss impacts wildlife migrations across the world. Recent research indicates that one in five migrating species is threatened with extinction, and 44% have a declining population. Fences, agricultural expansion and sprawling cities make it increasingly difficult for species to follow their natural migratory routes. Despite all the challenges, wild species are remarkably resilient and we know that nature can and does recover if given a chance. It's not too late to undo the damage and rewild landscapes and reopen ancient migratory pathways.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - For the enormous herds of wildebeest migrating yearly across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, river crossings are the most perilous part of the journey. Deep, churning waters filled with crocodiles present only part of the challenge. The wildebeest must also navigate steep banks while contending with thousands of herd members. The safety that come with traveling in huge herds is sometimes offset by the difficulties of squeezing up a narrow pathway carved into a crumbling riverbank with thousands of other wildebeest all treading the same course. The Mara River, flowing through northern Tanzania and southern Kenya, is one of the final obstacles the wildebeest must face before they reach the Mara plains.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - After decades of documenting Africa's big cats, the sight of a male lion in his prime – statuesque and regal – still leaves us breathless. These cats are symbols of nature's remarkable beauty and raw brutality. It's no wonder then that lions have inspired animated films and been immortalised in statues around the globe. Sadly, there are more statues of these cats in the world today than there are actual lions living in the wild. Habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and poaching continue to decimate lion populations and they now occupy as little as 5% of their historic range. But all is not lost. To combat this rapid decline, we set up the Big Cats Initiative in 2009, together with National Geographic. Now run by @GreatPlainsFoundation, the initiative supports efforts to save big cats through assessment, on-the-ground conservation, education, and global public-awareness campaigns. To date, the BCI has funded more than 150 projects in 28 countries and has made a massive impact on the future of these threatened cats. ⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - For male lions, the journey to adulthood can be tumultuous. As cubs, these cats are very vulnerable to attacks from rival predators or adult males that are looking to assert their bloodline in the pride. As they grow up, they must compete with their siblings for access to food and resources and it's often the bolder, more assertive cubs that rise higher in the social rankings. At around three years of age, males must leave their natal prides to traverse the often-daunting savannah in search of a territory to claim as their own. For this young male, his mane not yet fully developed, the journey has only just begun.⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - In the crisp, icy dawn, softened by swirling mist rising from a stream, this lone spotted hyena braved the cold water, wading to the other side where he’ll find refuge for the day when the temperature starts to climb. Hyenas are usually more active at cooler times of the day and prefer to do their hunting and prowling under the cover of darkness. Although they get much of the moisture they need from their prey, they’ll drink when fresh water is available. They also seem acutely aware that most plains game is water-dependent, so where there’s a river or stream, food is never far away.

Beverly Joubert Instagram - It's astonishing to witness the speed and agility of hippos. Although they spend the majority of the daylight hours basking, semi-submerged, in rivers or ponds, hippos venture out of the water at night or when the weather is cooler to feed on grass. Those dainty ankles are carrying around a ton and a half of territorial hippo and, despite his size, he can turn on a dime. Deeply scarred from territorial disputes – the wounds of which were likely made more severe by opportunistic oxpecker birds that feast on blood and parasites – this male clearly means business. Hippos are famously possessive over their pools and will aggressively defend them, sometimes even charging at innocuous animals like impalas. A herd of buffalo ventured a bit too close, and the enraged hippo voiced his displeasure at their presence. Although buffaloes can definitely hold their own against an aggressive hippo, this herd thought better of taking on the challenge and instead watched the angry behemoth from a distance.⁣⁣

For the lions, success lies in their ability to work together and strategise, coordinating the chaos to work in their favour. But a buffalo is no easy target; hunts like these are about favouring reward over risk. Beverly Joubert Instagram - Lion cubs are endlessly entertaining. Boisterous bouts of play fighting are a regular part of life for young cats as they wrestle with their siblings, learning their limits and establishing a family pecking order. Sadly, many cubs succumb to attacks from rival predators, disease or abandonment, and according to some estimates, only around 20% of cubs will survive to the age of two.⁣
⁣
In addition to natural threats, around a third of all lion deaths are caused by poaching. Populations of these big cats have plummeted in the last 50 years, and their numbers have declined by as much as 75%. We created the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic 15 years ago to help fund conservation and research initiatives to aid Africa's big cats. Today, the initiative is run by @greatplainsfoundation and to date, we have awarded over 150 grants to projects across the continent to help save lions (and their feline cousins).⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - It's difficult to imagine an African savannah without the statuesque figure of a giraffe decorating the horizon. Sadly, these iconic animals are rapidly disappearing across much of their range. Giraffe populations have declined by 40% in the last 30 years, and there are now fewer than 70,000 mature individuals left in the wild. Space is essential for large mammals, and shrinking habitats combined with a lack of wildlife law enforcement are largely to blame for what many are calling a silent extinction. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But all is not lost. Collaborative action among landowners in suitable giraffe habitats, along with more effective protection, could turn things around. The time to act is now.⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - Sundays are for snoozing. Lions sleep for most of the day, reserving their energy for the evenings when they go on the hunt. With limited sweat glands and a full coat of fur (not to mention a shaggy mane in the case of male lions), these big cats are quick to overheat, so they'll avoid prolonged daytime activity when the blazing African sun puts them at a disadvantage. This youngster found a flat rock to rest its head on – anything can be a pillow for big cats in the wild!⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - While filming in the Mara we watched as this cub – the more adventurous of the four that we documented for our film The Way of the Cheetah – clambered into the branches of a tree and almost completely disappeared in the dappled foliage. We’re thankful for every moment we share with the world’s most charismatic and threatened species and are constantly reminded of the delicate balance of the natural world and the role we play in its preservation. Our inspiration comes not only from the wild spaces where we are most at home, but also from other passionate conservationists who have dedicated their lives to protecting our planet. ⁣⁣

Beverly Joubert Instagram - When lion cubs are not asleep or feeding, they're playing. We never tire of watching and documenting the exuberant antics of these young cats as they gradually learn the intricacies of stalking and pouncing on their journey to becoming successful predators. Some cubs are bolder than others and quickly assert themselves as the most dominant amongst their siblings – it's the sort of fighting spirit that could either be an asset in the face of threats or something that will land these brazen youngsters in trouble when they start battles they can't win.⁣

From the relative safety of a broken tree trunk, this leopardess carefully scanned her surroundings, her stare unwavering as she searched for potential prey in the dusk. ⁣

Their unique form has awed visitors to Africa for centuries, but like so many other species, giraffes are in trouble. We know what must be done to save them: prioritise conservation efforts, safeguard habitats, address threats like illegal hunting. If we don't act now, we stand to lose these iconic creatures forever.⁣

Beverly Joubert - 7.5K Likes - “Driven by an urge that cannot be ignored, these zebras journey over 250 kilometres each year from the grasslands of the Okavango Delta to the expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the south.

Giraffes rarely graze or travel on their own, preferring to move in herds that provide safety in numbers and more eyes sweeping their landscape for lurking predators. ⁣ ⁣ Giraffe societies are about more than just safety though. Herds are cooperative and interdependent and, much like elephants, older matriarchs play a vital role imparting knowledge to the next generation. ⁣ ⁣ #giraffe #wildlife #nature⁣

Beverly Joubert - 4.8K Likes - Some years ago, we were fortunate to spent time with this gorgeous female leopard named Fig as she raised her cub on the plains of the Maasai Mara.

Beverly Joubert - 4.7K Likes - The chaos of the crossing.

If you're close enough, you'll feel the vibrations of the call rolling through your bones and likely triggering the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up straight.

On Kenya’s savannahs – like in many African ecosystems – water shapes the landscape and regulates animal migration patterns. It can be both a source of sustenance and a perilous obstacle for the species that traverse these vast wild lands.⁣ ⁣ #wildlife #lions

She's still too young to take part in the chase, but she'll watch keen-eyed from the sidelines learning the skills she'll need to one day fend for herself. As few as 7,000 cheetahs remain in the wild today, and these big cats occupy a meagre 9% of their historic range. Habitat loss and human conflict have decimated their populations and it's now up to all of us to find sustainable solutions that will secure a future for these iconic cats.⁣

At this age, the tiny youngsters are very vulnerable, especially in moments like these when their only source of protection must temporarily abandon them in search of food. But rival predators and wily scavengers are the least of the worries for these big cats. Cheetahs inhabit a fraction of their former range, with only around 7,000 individuals still left in the wild. We are running out of time if we hope to reverse this heartbreaking decline. ⁣⁣⁣

Wise, affectionate but independent, and always watching the world with a quiet curiosity, she harboured a wildness behind those soft jade eyes – a quintessential quality that we've witnessed many times before in the wild cats that we have spent decades documenting. Today, on #NationalLoveYourPetDay, we're reminded of the incredible impact Smokey had on our lives. She may be gone, but sharing our home with Smokey provided a special window into the mysterious world of cats and only increased our fascination with them.⁣
⁣
Our pets rely on us for care, just as wild animals rely on us for protection. Across Africa, big cats like lions and leopards face immense threats – from habitat loss to poaching. They may not curl up on our laps, but they are just as deserving of our love and protection.⁣
⁣
To support their future, we’ve launched a fundraiser for the @GreatPlainsFoundation's Big Cats Initiative – a crucial conservation program @DereckJoubert and I founded to protect these apex predators and the ecosystems they call home. From now until May, I am offering six limited-edition fine art prints to support the initiative. 100% of the proceeds will go toward critical conservation efforts.⁣

Beverly Joubert - 3K Likes - He may be a dominant male, but this lion turned tail when faced with five well-horned buffaloes.

After watching his mother scale the gnarled trunk of a fallen tree, this youngster was determined to follow suit. For mom, the climb is more than just a game. From a higher outlook she can scour her surroundings for potential meals or shady spots in which to rest safely during the heat of the day.

Caption : It’s astonishing to witness the speed and agility of hippos. Although buffaloes can definitely hold their own against an aggressive hippo, this herd thought better of taking on the challenge and instead watched the angry behemoth from a distance.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #HippoDay #WorldHippoDay #hippo #Okavango #wildlife

For the lions, success lies in their ability to work together and strategise, coordinating the chaos to work in their favour. But a buffalo is no easy target; hunts like these are about favouring reward over risk. Sadly, there's an even greater risk that threatens even the hardiest of both predator and prey: dwindling space. As human development surges ever forward, natural habitats are shrinking and many species are being forced into smaller and smaller pockets of fragmented land where survival can be tenuous. Through @GreatPlainsConservation and @GreatPlainsFoundation, we have been working to protect natural habitats, rewildling landscapes and providing a home for imperilled species. It's a small step towards a more sustainable future – something that we will never stop striving for.⁣

A small herd of zebra prepare to feast on the nutrient-rich grassland, but seem unsettled by the haze and the possibility of what may be lurking unseen in the swirling mist. For grazing species like zebras, safety in numbers is important. Moving as a group ensures that there are more eyes scanning the landscape for threats and less chance of an individual being singled out by a predator.

Even elephants are dwarfed by these expansive ‘skyscapes’, reduced to just outlines on the horizon that move in harmony with nature’s delicately balanced rhythms.⁣

Their versatile vocal range includes loud braying and barking as well as soft snorting sounds. Silent communication takes the form of careful ear positioning, teeth barring and even how wide open their eyes are. There is likely an entire zebra language comprised of subtle actions and sounds that we are yet to decipher – and possibly never will.⁣

Beverly Joubert - 2.6K Likes - It's difficult to imagine an African savannah without the statuesque figure of a giraffe decorating the horizon.

I’m thrilled that this photo could be included in a campaign honouring Dr Jane Goodall and the massive contribution she has made to science and conservation.
