Carlota Guerrero Instagram - Before the opening of our current pop-up in Los Angeles, we curated a performative installation featuring our friend and muse Kiko Mizuhara. Inspired by the vibrant culture of celebrity that defines the city, we aimed to explore the inner world of pop icons, delving into their experiences of hypervigilance and the pervasive nature of idealization.

The setting of this installation captures the allure and complexity of celebrity culture. Amidst the space, a woman sleeps, her presence contrasting with the city’s pulse. Yet, even in her repose, she becomes a focal point, an object of fascination for those who pass by.

Conceptualized and documented by Carlota Guerrero, the piece is part of her extensive repertoire and exploration of the female gaze. Through her work, she delves into the complexities of how women perceive themselves and are perceived by others, encouraging reflection on the vulnerability and constant exposure inherent in the female experience.

Carlota Guerrero Instagram - “Sofia Willendorf”
Silicon, hair and clay (2022) @staatsgaleriestuttgart #carlotaguerrero

“An apparent visitor stands serenely in a corner of the exhibition room. She has her back turned to the rest of the viewers and looks down towards a small figurine she holds with one of her hands.

Titled Sofia Willendorf, the installation takes the historian and anthropologist LeRoy McDermott and Catherine Hodge's thesis from their article Decolonizing Gender: Female Vision in the Upper Paleolithic (1996) as the starting point. In the text, the authors criticize the way the first images of human bodies, the Venus figurines, have generally been interpreted “as sex objects made from a male point of view”. Instead, they argue, they were made by women and for women as a form of self-representation. Following this, the apparent distortions of the anatomy of the figurines become apt renderings if we consider the body as seen by a woman, presumably pregnant, looking down on herself.

Regardless of the veracity of the argument —which seems perfectly logical and credible— the question remains; why did it take so long to consider the logical possibility that a female point of view was involved?

Sofia Willendorf gives voice to that pregnant woman in the contemporary context, where past and present archetypes are confronted under the veil of an imposed male gaze the artist tries to subvert. A certain discomfort emerges while staring at the duo, ironically separated by 30,000 years gap. Originally purchased as a sex doll manufactured in China, the contemporary visitor cheerlessly exemplifies both the prevalence and the profound influence of the patriarchy."

Carlota Guerrero Instagram - “Adriana, Carlota, María” (2022) by the artist Carlota Guerrero @carlota_guerrero is the first artwork edited and produced by Penélope Archive.

In the artist’s own words, “three bodies that seemed to emerge from my own, three mirrors. We shared a flat in Via Laietana and previously on Carrer Lluís Companys. An organism formed by women is an image that has haunted me since I can remember. One afternoon, as we bathed together after having already bathed in a river that morning, it materialised before my eyes. “Adriana, Carlota, María” is a personal memory of a friendship among girls evolving into women, a memory that has now become a landscape.”

Limited edition of 200

In words of @carlota_guerrero “7th edition working alongside my dearest friend Paloma, creating a space and a concept to present her collection. We’ve gone through so many stages during these last years, yet I feel this has been the most precious. A month ago, we spent a weekend in the seaside brainstorming what the show should look like. Sitting on a bench, looking at the sea, heart full of gratitude, plenty of caffeine, sun in our faces; “Puyi, we should just have the girls playing Petanque.” - “It’s perfect.” Paloma was wearing a big blue cashmere foulard inherited from her mom and her glasses up in her head, holding her hair back. “Also, they should be styled like you right now. We should be honest about who you are“. We laughed but we also got emotional. I think it was a feeling of acceptance of growing old together, of suddenly finding cool things that used to be relegated to our mothers or our aunties, of realising she is now the mother and I’m finding inspiration in her: an ongoing process of growth and learning that never ends.”

Carlota Guerrero - 37.8K Likes - Before the opening of our current pop-up in Los Angeles, we curated a performative installation featuring our friend and muse Kiko Mizuhara.

Carlota Guerrero - 8.5K Likes - “Sofia Willendorf”

We’ve gone through so many stages during these last years, yet I feel this has been the most precious. A month ago, we spent a weekend in the seaside brainstorming what the show should look like. Sitting on a bench, looking at the sea, heart full of gratitude, plenty of caffeine, sun in our faces; “Puyi, we should just have the girls playing Petanque.” – “It’s perfect.” Paloma was wearing a big blue cashmere foulard inherited from her mom and her glasses up in her head, holding her hair back. “Also, they should be styled like you right now. We should be honest about who you are“. We laughed but we also got emotional. I think it was a feeling of acceptance of growing old together, of suddenly finding cool things that used to be relegated to our mothers or our aunties, of realising she is now the mother and I’m finding inspiration in her: an ongoing process of growth and learning that never ends.” Styling @emimikareh Concept & Art direction @carlota_guerrero Casting @emilieastrom Makeup @alliesmithmakeup @agentnateur Hair @karimbelghiran @phytoparis Set @moiruki Movement direction @guillemjimenezz Eyewear @secondevue Music @_regate Production @producing_love Press @dlx.co Photography @remiprocureur Nails @mhchi28__2 *Photo no 4 @aliciapastorva *Video no 6 @monikalyko
