Debbie Millman Instagram - Okay...this is a bit scary for me to post...and perhaps one of the hardest things I've ever shared. I wrote an Op-Ed that was printed today in the @phillyinquirer. In it I share my experience in the early 1970s as an 11-year-old girl worrying I might be pregnant after being raped over and over again by my stepfather. At the time no one was openly talking about incest and, having never heard about it before, I truly thought I was the only girl in the world it could be happening to. That, and my stepfather told me over and over again he would kill my mother and my little brother if I ever told anyone. I'm sharing this story to hopefully add a perspective to the universal need for reproductive freedom. A big thank you to my friend @devi_lockwood for encouraging me to share my story. Debbie Millman Instagram - Does this sound familiar? “You’re too fat and too thin; your breasts are too big and too small. Your body is wrong. If you’re not trying to change it, you’re lazy. If you’re satisfied with yourself as you are, you’re settling. And if you dare to actively like yourself, you’re a conceited bitch. In short, you are doing it wrong. Do it differently. No, that’s wrong too, try something else. Forever. This” You might think it’s from the recent movie Barbie, but it is actually a quote from @enagoski’s 2015 NYTimes best-selling book, “Come As You Are: the surprising new science that will transform your sex life.” The book enabled people to have a deeper understanding of why and how we have sex and how to feel less critical of and dissatisfied with our bodies. Now she’s back with a brilliant book titled “Come Together: The Science (and Art!) of Creating Lasting Sexual Connections,” and we talked all about it in my latest episode of Design Matters. Debbie Millman Instagram - My latest episode of Design Matters was recorded live at the @onairfest. It is with Pulitzer Prize winning writer and legendary editor of @newyorkermag, @officialdavidremnick. In this episode we talk about what it is like to work at one of the greatest magazines in the world, how he got started in the business, his time in Russia, his love of music, the future of democracy, and how to win the NYer caption contest (on my bucket list). Link to listen is in my bio. This is a fun one, David is a total dreamboat.

Debbie Millman Instagram - I was asked by dear friend and long-time colleague @zachary_petit to share my thoughts on what I think needs to be redesigned in 2024 for an article he was writing for @fastcompany. I thought about this for a long time and almost missed Zac’s deadline. Yes, there are loads of things that need to be redesigned—that MUST be redesigned. I outlined a few, alongside some of my design and branding heroes, including @thealexcenter, @pumlefebure and @emcray. My list is not exhaustive but my last and final suggestion is one I am deeply pondering and hoping for, but also aware that this needs to be a global initiative. Somehow, we have to find the strength and clarity to undertake this effort. My one big hope is on the next slide, and the link to read the entire article is in my bio or here: http://tinyurl.com/Fastco2024

Debbie Millman Instagram - @toddstjohn works in a lot of different media, including Illustration, animation, sculpture, graphic design, photography, furniture and industrial design. He is the definition of a polymath. But no matter the medium, there is always something ‘Todd St. John-ish’ about his work. His designs tend to be both playfully conceptual and seriously sculptural. Even when he’s working with in two dimensions, his images feel like they’re made of something you want to hold in your hand. Todd is the founder and creative director of HunterGatherer—aka @huganyc—whose clients include Nike, Google and the City of New York. He’s illustration work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Wired Magazine and more, and he is my guest on this brand new episode of Design Matters. Debbie Millman Instagram - Sometimes you can tell a lot about writers from the names of their books. Here are three titles by Nell Irvin Painter: “Southern History Across the Color Line,” “Creating Black Americans: African American History and Its Meanings, 1619 to the Present,” and “The History of White People.”

Nell Irvin Painter is a distinguished, award-winning historian and she’s written a lot about the South in the 19th Century, and about race. She’s a professor emerita from Princeton University, and by all rights she could be resting comfortably on her laurels. But she is not, because she is also an artist. The title of another of her books is “Old in Art School: A Memoir of Starting Over.” These two pursuits—history and art—come together beautifully in her brand new book, “I Just Keep Talking: A Life in Essays,” which is punctuated throughout by images of her paintings. Debbie Millman Instagram - In 2005 I took a class at @svanyc with the late, great Milton Glaser. One of the exercises in his class was writing an essay articulating what your life could be five years into the future envisioning everything you wanted it to be, if you do could anything you wanted without fear or failure. I decided to put my heart into this exercise and wrote a ten-page hand-written essay outlining my biggest, most audacious dreams. For the first time in my life, I didn’t edit what was possible before it was possible and I recorded every hope that I had. I put my disbelief and skepticism and pessimism aside and imagined a future of joy and abundance and freedom. It was a spectacularly life-affirming experience. And over the years—17 to be exact—every single one of the things I wrote about has happened. There is something tangibly mysterious about this exercise and—honestly—I am not exactly sure how it works. Maybe suspending disbelief in steadfastly rigid beliefs can allow some light in. Perhaps declaring what is possible out loud helps it all feel real. Or it could be just human hope, manifested in a moment and forgotten. When Milton stopped teaching I asked him if I could teach the exercise to my students and he agreed. I talked about this on my dear friend @timferriss’ podcast and it went sort of viral. And now, several years later, for the first time ever, I have partnered with @chroniclebooks to create a deck of cards to help anyone else that wants to undertake this exercise! My REMARKABLE LIFE DECK provides prompts to identify your hopes and aspirations, and, by daring you to dream them, helps you make those dreams a reality. Featuring 30 illustrated cards with generative prompts, an instructional booklet, and a workbook for creating your own ten-year plan, this deck makes a meaningful gift for anyone contemplating a big life change, anyone searching for clarity and direction and anyone who wants to imagine what the immensities of their own life can be. Debbie Millman Instagram - My magnificent mother-in-law left the earth today. She leaves in her wake a magnificent husband, remarkable children (one of whom is my wife), phenomenal grandchildren and a boatload of siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. Nicole Gay was a brilliant, beautiful bad-ass. She was the most put-together old-school glamour gal around. She was sharp, funny, saucy as hell and whip-smart. She always said what she meant and meant what she said. She didn’t sugarcoat. She didn’t smile when she didn’t feel like smiling. She didn’t lie or flatter or fawn. She didn’t complain but if you asked how she was, she told you the truth. She was the most dignified person I've ever met. She ironed her impeccable outfits every day. She had her bedsheets pressed. She was a clean-freak. She walked faster than I did (and I walk fast). And when one part of my side of the family imploded, she comforted me as my mom: she held my hand, wiped my tears away and handed me a tissue. She made me laugh, and laughed at my jokes. She knew how much I love her daughter. I think she knew how much I loved her. I hope so—as I did—with all my heart. Rest in peace and power and your best Chanel suit, my darling mother, my friend, my family.

Debbie Millman Instagram - More “What Matters” interviews are here in celebration of FOUR years of this column! For those not familiar with my weekly post on @print_mag, here’s some details: In February of 2021, I started a new column for @print_mag wherein I ask some of the most creative people in the world 10 of the same questions about life, love, creativity, food, and my favorite: how long the feeling of accomplishing something lasts. The column is called “What Matters” and it is a bit of a Proustian questionnaire with a decidedly creative angle. To see over 200 interviews, you can go to the What Matters link in my bio. If you’d like to participate in the questionnaire please DM me!

Debbie Millman Instagram - Listening to Demi Moore’s beautiful acceptance speech last night at the Golden Globes, I was shocked to hear her say that for a long time she thought she “wasn’t enough.” I’ve been thinking about this ever since. How could this stunning, world famous, successful actor feel this way? When are our accomplishments ever enough? When can we feel content? Can we ever be satisfied? Must there always be a next step, a new goal, a higher bar to reach? When is enough enough?

Debbie Millman Instagram - Listening to Demi Moore’s beautiful acceptance speech last night at the Golden Globes, I was shocked to hear her say that for a long time she thought she “wasn’t enough.” I’ve been thinking about this ever since. How could this stunning, world famous, successful actor feel this way? When are our accomplishments ever enough? When can we feel content? Can we ever be satisfied? Must there always be a next step, a new goal, a higher bar to reach? When is enough enough?

Debbie Millman Instagram - More “What Matters” columns are here! For those not familiar with my weekly column on @print_mag, here’s some details: In February of 2021, I started a new column for @print_mag wherein I ask some of the most creative people in the world 10 of the same questions about life, love, creativity, food, and my favorite: how long the feeling of accomplishing something lasts. The column is called “What Matters” and it is a bit of a Proustian questionnaire with a decidedly creative angle. To see over 150 interviews, you can go to the What Matters link in my bio. If you’d like to participate in the questionnaire please DM me!

Debbie Millman Instagram - This election year, reproductive rights are on the ballot and we need to make our voices heard. This is an issue I’m deeply passionate about, so I’ve teamed up with @merchaid to design a limited-edition t-shirt and print that are raising important and necessary funds for @abortionfunds. The full capsule will be one sale Monday June 3rd at 12pm EST, and will include my pals @jessicavwalsh and @gailycurl. You can shop the collab from 12pm EST June 3rd at www.getmerchaid.com.

Debbie Millman Instagram - Hi everyone and Happy September! I am writing with some exciting news! I have a brand new book coming out in April, 2025. It is titled “Love Letter to a Garden,” and it is an illustrated story about my long quest to create and sustain a garden. This all began with an interstitial I was commissioned to create for @Ted when, because of Covid, the conference went fully online in 2021. I had migrated to LA to be with Roxane at that time and began to make an LA garden after struggling for years (decades) to make one in NY. @makenna_good at @Timberpress saw both that visual story and one I created for @afarmedia after my expedition to Antarctica and invited me to write and illustrate a book about my efforts to create gardens in both Manhattan and LA. I’m sharing the cover of the book here for the very first time, and some random pages which feature my illustrations, watercolors and painted photographs. This introduction is in tandem with my move to @wordpressdotcom for my personal site, debbiemillman.com. I’ve been working with WordPress for a year on this effort (after the @thewebbyawards winning collaboration on the @endthebacklog website for @thejhf). Working with WordPress has been a DREAM. Thank you to the many, many people who have helped make this possible, especially Amelia Nash aka @amelia.of.all.things and Joe Korbel. And a note about the cover of my book! Several years ago, one of my brilliant students at @svabranding , Emma Herbolzheimer aka @emmaherb_ launched the paper florist brand @budswithmama for her 100 Day Project. I was inspired by her work and used one of my favorite of her creations as reference for my cover illustration. (Thank you Emma). AND FINALLY! I was invited by @Artinnovation to participate in a Times Square Billboard exhibition and took this opportunity to announce the coming publication of the book. It takes a village to do everything these days and this entire effort was a collaborative labor of love. Link to see my updated website and to read (and see) more, please go to the link in my bio or here: debbiemillman.com. You’ll also be able to get one of @roxanegay74’s splendid salad dressing recipes here in this Instagram post.

Link to read the piece is in my bio or here: https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/commentary/roe-abortion-rights-consequences-1973-20220628.html

Debbie Millman - 17.2K Likes - Does this sound familiar?

Debbie Millman - 11.5K Likes - In 2005 I took a class at @svanyc with the late, great Milton Glaser. Caption : In 2005 I took a class at @svanyc with the late, great Milton Glaser. Debbie Millman - 11.3K Likes - My magnificent mother-in-law left the earth today.

She knew how much I love her daughter. I think she knew how much I loved her. I hope so—as I did—with all my heart. Rest in peace and power and your best Chanel suit, my darling mother, my friend, my family.

Debbie Millman - 11.3K Likes - More “What Matters” interviews are here in celebration of FOUR years of this column!

Debbie Millman - 10.9K Likes - Listening to Demi Moore’s beautiful acceptance speech last night at the Golden Globes, I was shocked to hear her say that for a long time she thought she “wasn’t enough.” I’ve been thinking about this ever since. How could this stunning, world famous, successful actor feel this way? When are our accomplishments ever enough? When can we feel content? Can we ever be satisfied? Must there always be a next step, a new goal, a higher bar to reach? When is enough enough?

For those not familiar with my weekly column on @print_mag, here’s some details: In February of 2021, I started a new column for @print_mag wherein I ask some of the most creative people in the world 10 of the same questions about life, love, creativity, food, and my favorite: how long the feeling of accomplishing something lasts. The column is called “What Matters” and it is a bit of a Proustian questionnaire with a decidedly creative angle. To see over 150 interviews, you can go to the What Matters link in my bio.

Debbie Millman - 10.2K Likes - This election year, reproductive rights are on the ballot and we need to make our voices heard.

Debbie Millman - 10.1K Likes - Hi everyone and Happy September!
