Elizabeth Smart Instagram - Yesterday was my 20 year rescue anniversary. I was able to celebrate by relaxing at home and spending time with my little family. Thank you so much for all the kind messages I received, the many prayers I’ve been the recipient of over the years, and all the love I’ve been shown. I’ll never be able to express my full gratitude enough. It is fair to say I could have never imagined my life turning out the way it has. 20 years ago when I was kidnapped I didn’t know if I would survive, each day was a question right up until I was rescued. Once I was rescued it was a rollercoaster of emotion and honestly felt like we were all stepping into the unknown. And now 20 years later looking back although it was difficult and often overwhelming I’m so grateful for my experiences and the path it has lead me down, meeting my husband, having children, learning a whole new level of empathy and compassion, meeting the most amazing and dedicated individuals, and being able to devote my life to a cause that I feel so passionate about and feeling like I’m contributing to the betterment of humanity is more than I could ask for. Thinking back it’s hard to believe it was my life, and remembering what I thought back then it’s hard to believe this is my life today. Elizabeth Smart Instagram - 🎄 Consent During the Holidays: Some Quick Thoughts 🎁

1. Respect boundaries: Before those festive hugs and kisses, ask if it's cool—especially with kids! And never ever kiss a babies' face (germ alert!) and don't take them from mom's arms unless she offers.

2. Snap and Share Mindfully: Check before you click! Some folks aren't keen on pics, or are okay with them but don't want them posted online. Respect their choice—no fuss needed!

3. Chat Considerately: Skip politics, religion and money conversations. Chat instead about the best Great British Baking Show Challenge (Devonshire Splits obviously) or why dogs rule!

4. Gifts = No Strings Attached: Presents aren't for manipulation. Keep them genuine and free from hidden agendas.

5. Safe Spaces Matter: parents really appreciate having a quiet spot to help calm their littles after a meltdown. Also, a room where a holiday movie marathon is going and no conversations are necessary is so nice.

6. Food Choices Matter Too: Ask guests if they have allergies or follow a specific diet.
Try for an inclusive menu, or ask them to contribute a dish. They will be grateful for your transparency and more than likely happy to bring a dish to share!

7. Exit Plans: Partners and kids should have a clear way to communicate discreetly that they feel overwhelmed or uneasy. Have a secret phrase like "candy cane" to make a graceful exit if needed.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with parenting. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the important conversations I’m going to have with my kids. The one that has been on my heart lately is about consent.
Consent is more than a form you fill out that allows your kid to play soccer, go on a field trip, or be treated by a doctor. Consent is a lifestyle practice where your boundaries and wants are respected and validated, and that same courtesy is extended to others.
I’m working on a project about consent and would love your help. There is a survey linked in my bio where you can share anonymously about your understandings regarding sexual consent. Elizabeth Smart Instagram - Handling Family and Consent.

I've gotten this question a few times in my comments and stories. I've put them together into one question to hit many points simultaneously.

Q: "I don't force my kid to hug/kiss anyone, not even me. As we greet our family, I ask my kid, "Would you like to hug or high-five Grandpa?"

My family is critical of this practice. I'm worried about the comments my kid might receive from the family members. What do I do?"

A: Teaching body autonomy is critical to creating a culture of consent. Body autonomy is having the power and ability to make choices for your body.

Teaching body autonomy protects kids from future s3xual abuse and assault.

Kids aged 1-12 should know they can choose how they give and receive affection.

They'll still have to take baths and wear seatbelts, but they call the shots regarding affection.

While many people were forced to hug and kiss their family and never experienced r*pe or abuse, many have. The argument, "We made you do it, and everything was fine." is survivorship bias.

We now know 93% of abuse comes from someone we know, 70% of abuse happens to people 17 and under, and 50% of people who mol3sted a child under the age of 6 were family members (YWCA Factsheet).

Our kids need to know that they don't owe ANYONE affection. If anyone, even a family member, compromises that, we will back our child up EVERY TIME.

Now, if the adults in your kids' life want to make comments to the child, SHUT IT DOWN. It's inappropriate. Your child is not responsible for their happiness or feeling loved.

FIRMLY explain that you will not tolerate having your child talked to like that. If they want to learn more, they can talk to you privately.

Often, when people understand that this protects the kid from abuse and that most abuse comes from someone the kid knows, it's respected.

If not, and the boundary is pushed, stop hanging out with that family member completely or only when your child(ren) is absent.

Spending time with family, creating memories, laughing, more Costco ready made meals than I can count, outside runs, and endless days of sunshine and surfing has made this summer the best one yet. You gave my kids the summer I always wanted for them, I believe it will be a core memory. As a parent I want to fill their childhoods with love, happiness, and adventure so when hard things befall them in the future they can always remember what happiness feels like and know that it exists. My only regret is that you sped by way too quick and now it will be another 11 months before we meet again. In the meantime I look forward to many more Julys to come and happy memories to make.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - It seems like life somehow always makes it full circle. One of the first people I met after I was rescued was a man named Chris Thomas (@csthomas4 ) at the time I didn’t really understand the roll he played in my family while I was kidnapped, one of the most shocking parts of coming home was the vast amount of attention my story had received and continued to receive I quickly grew to trust Chris and came to look at him as a mentor, friend, and honestly a big brother. He was there the day I came home, he accompanied my family when we were generously offered a reprieve to Hawaii and were able to get away from everything, he helped me when I wrote my first book “My Story” and funnily enough he helped arrange everything for my wedding in Hawaii back in 2012, ultimately he has been a friend and present for almost every major milestone in my life. So as this Sunday marks 20 years since I’ve been rescued I’m happy to be able to help Chris share his story, “Unexpected.” It is now available on Amazon, audible, Barnes and Noble, Target, basically everywhere that sells books.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - The second picture is from the last official timed half marathon I ran. I was pregnant with my youngest daughter and every step of the way was a struggle! Fast forward to today I halved my time, set a PB, and had a blast. When I began running I was not fast at all, in fact my youngest brother could out walk my run. I’m so proud of the running journey I’ve been on, today makes all the early mornings, tired afternoons, hours and hours of running and speed training feel like and perhaps serves me as a reminder that if I make up my mind and commit to a goal and stay consistent anything is possible.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - So seriously, do you always have to ask for permission, even if you are in a long-term relationship or married?

Let’s cover a few things first.

1. Let's look at the stats. 10-14% of married women experience r*pe from their husbands and 15-25% of women from their intimate partner*.

2. Emotional IQ matters. Are you self-aware of your wants, needs, and desires? Can you communicate with them effectively and hold your boundaries?

3. Are you observant of others' body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions? Do you take the time to correctly interpret and RESPECT those cues?

4. Do you know your romantic partner does not owe you anything, especially access to their body? This makes no difference whether or not you have a marriage certificate.

5. Any agreement regarding another person's body can be REVOKED anytime.

Now that we are clear on that let me answer the question.

If you BOTH are solid and in agreement on items 2-5 that I listed, then YES, there are physical actions that you and your partner can create a blanket consent agreement that it's okay to do.

The what, when, how, and where is up to you both to MUTUALLY decide upon. And, of course, can be REVOKED anytime by either party.

But if I'm going to be completely honest. Many couples need to improve at ALL of these things, even if they've been together for a long time.

It's easy to get complacent and forget to romance your partner.

It's easy to treat your partner as your stress relief toy rather than as a person with complex thoughts, needs, and desires.

It's easy to forget that both parties are responsible for creating an environment where both want and willingness can thrive.

That's why being direct with what, how, why, and where you want your partner is the exact opposite of a mood killer.

Making it your goal to get that "yes" because they want to and not just because they are willing kicks things up a notch.

So yes, there are instances where blanket consent is appropriate.

But I'm here trying to change our overall view on consent. It's not a romantic wet blanket—rather a romance igniter.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - What a bittersweet day the first day of school is! On the one hand if I hear “I’m bored, there’s nothing to do, I want a snack!” One more time I might cry and scream so the thought of school is a blessed relief. On the other hand a new school year feels very definitive in marking each one of my children as another year older and that means childhood is fading which makes me feel like crying.

Safety should always be an ongoing conversation within our families, but it’s easy to forget about it during summer activities. Especially if you feel like you are always with them.

A few things to consider chatting about with them might be:
Who are safe people?
What can you do if you are scared?
Do you know the difference between a secret and a surprise?
Does anyone have the right to touch you?
What they do if they can’t find you or get in contact with you.

This short list is by no means complete, but a good place to start. I think working to continually hold our children’s trust in us, and maintain open and honest communication can make all the difference when it comes to undesirable circumstances and dangerous people.

Elizabeth Smart Instagram - After I was rescued from being kidnapped I didn’t want to speak about what happened with anyone, I wanted to hide those nine months away, and pretend they didn’t happen. Even though my head knew none of it was my fault my heart still felt embarrassment and shame over the vast amounts of sexual abuse I experienced. At the time I didn’t know anyone else who openly shared they had been raped or violated, and no one took the time to explain to me that there is a difference between sexual abuse/rape versus enthusiastic consenting intimacy. Since then I experienced more life, fell in love, got married, had a family, and learned that rape and true intimacy couldn’t be more different. This partnership with @mentionables is so important to me on a personal level, because I don’t want any other person to go through being raped and assaulted thinking it is the same as consenting intimacy. When engaging in physical intimacy I want people everywhere to realize the day and night difference, to feel safe, empowered, beautiful, sexy, and excited to engage with their partner instead of fear, lack of control, pain, danger, betrayal, or self loathing. Being able to enjoy every aspect of consenting relationships should be a basic human right. Being able to enhance romantic and passionate situations should be encouraged and embraced, and for me that means beautiful and sexy lingerie. There’s a ton I don’t know, but I do know we are all stronger than we think we are. I sincerely doubted my ability to finish within my goal time but thanks to working with a coach, running with my friend, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other I finished and achieved my goal! I would have cried at the end but I ran out of liquid to cry after all that sweat 😅 but I’ll be smiling the rest of the day!!!!
