Caption : I’ve been training for @stgeorgemarathon since June and I’m so proud I finished it today and had a personal best!!!! There’s a ton I don’t know, but I do know we are all stronger than we think we are. I sincerely doubted my ability to finish within my goal time but thanks to working with a coach, running with my friend, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other I finished and achieved my goal! I would have cried at the end but I ran out of liquid to cry after all that sweat 😅 but I’ll be smiling the rest of the day!!!!

Caption : 🎄 Consent During the Holidays: Some Quick Thoughts 🎁 1. Respect boundaries: Before those festive hugs and kisses, ask if it’s cool—especially with kids! And never ever kiss a babies’ face (germ alert!) and don’t take them from mom’s arms unless she offers. 2. Snap and Share Mindfully: Check before you click! Some folks aren’t keen on pics, or are okay with them but don’t want them posted online. Respect their choice—no fuss needed! 3. Chat Considerately: Skip politics, religion and money conversations. Chat instead about the best Great British Baking Show Challenge (Devonshire Splits obviously) or why dogs rule! 4. Gifts = No Strings Attached: Presents aren’t for manipulation. Keep them genuine and free from hidden agendas. 5. Safe Spaces Matter: parents really appreciate having a quiet spot to help calm their littles after a meltdown. Also, a room where a holiday movie marathon is going and no conversations are necessary is so nice. 6. Food Choices Matter Too: Ask guests if they have allergies or follow a specific diet. Try for an inclusive menu, or ask them to contribute a dish. They will be grateful for your transparency and more than likely happy to bring a dish to share! 7. Exit Plans: Partners and kids should have a clear way to communicate discreetly that they feel overwhelmed or uneasy. Have a secret phrase like “candy cane” to make a graceful exit if needed. Caption : There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with parenting. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the important conversations I’m going to have with my kids. The one that has been on my heart lately is about consent. Consent is more than a form you fill out that allows your kid to play soccer, go on a field trip, or be treated by a doctor. Consent is a lifestyle practice where your boundaries and wants are respected and validated, and that same courtesy is extended to others. I’m working on a project about consent and would love your help. There is a survey linked in my bio where you can share anonymously about your understandings regarding sexual consent. Caption : A few weeks after being rescued, I went to church with my family. I had a cold, and so during the service, I excused myself to blow my nose in the bathroom. What I didn’t realize is that a strange lady followed me in and started accusing me of actually wanting to be with my captor. She accused me of awful things, one of which was that I actually wanted to be with my captor, that I just shut down. Luckily, my sister came and saved me, and a bunch of other things happened that I won’t bore you with (plus, you can learn all about it in my course, Wholehearted Consent). The reason why I bring up this point is sometimes you “consent” because you are in survival mode, and that is the safer choice at the moment. Emily Nagoski, Ph.D., renowned s3x educator, does a beautiful job defining unwilling consent. When I read the definition, I was like, “YES! She nailed it!” “When I fear the consequences of saying no more than I fear the consequences of saying yes.” Now, to clarify, I never said yes to my captor. But I did have the survival mindset on, as do many other s3xual assault survivors do. Acquiescing does not mean they “wanted to.” rather, they were simply trying to survive. We all need to sit with this definition and understand that a verbal yes does not always mean willing consent. Understanding this nuance is critical if we are going to show up wholeheartedly and support s3xual assault survivors.

Caption : Handling Family and Consent. I’ve gotten this question a few times in my comments and stories. I’ve put them together into one question to hit many points simultaneously. Q: “I don’t force my kid to hug/kiss anyone, not even me. As we greet our family, I ask my kid, “Would you like to hug or high-five Grandpa?” My family is critical of this practice. I’m worried about the comments my kid might receive from the family members. What do I do?” A: Teaching body autonomy is critical to creating a culture of consent. Body autonomy is having the power and ability to make choices for your body. Teaching body autonomy protects kids from future s3xual abuse and assault. Kids aged 1-12 should know they can choose how they give and receive affection. They’ll still have to take baths and wear seatbelts, but they call the shots regarding affection. While many people were forced to hug and kiss their family and never experienced r*pe or abuse, many have. The argument, “We made you do it, and everything was fine.” is survivorship bias. We now know 93% of abuse comes from someone we know, 70% of abuse happens to people 17 and under, and 50% of people who mol3sted a child under the age of 6 were family members (YWCA Factsheet). Our kids need to know that they don’t owe ANYONE affection. If anyone, even a family member, compromises that, we will back our child up EVERY TIME. Now, if the adults in your kids’ life want to make comments to the child, SHUT IT DOWN. It’s inappropriate. Your child is not responsible for their happiness or feeling loved. FIRMLY explain that you will not tolerate having your child talked to like that. If they want to learn more, they can talk to you privately. Often, when people understand that this protects the kid from abuse and that most abuse comes from someone the kid knows, it’s respected. If not, and the boundary is pushed, stop hanging out with that family member completely or only when your child(ren) is absent. One of the first people I met after I was rescued was a man named Chris Thomas (@csthomas4 ) at the time I didn’t really understand the roll he played in my family while I was kidnapped, one of the most shocking parts of coming home was the vast amount of attention my story had received and continued to receive I quickly grew to trust Chris and came to look at him as a mentor, friend, and honestly a big brother. Caption : So seriously, do you always have to ask for permission, even if you are in a long-term relationship or married? Let’s cover a few things first. 1. Let’s look at the stats. 10-14% of married women experience r*pe from their husbands and 15-25% of women from their intimate partner*. 2. Emotional IQ matters. Are you self-aware of your wants, needs, and desires? Can you communicate with them effectively and hold your boundaries? 3. Are you observant of others’ body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions? Do you take the time to correctly interpret and RESPECT those cues? 4. Do you know your romantic partner does not owe you anything, especially access to their body? This makes no difference whether or not you have a marriage certificate. 5. Any agreement regarding another person’s body can be REVOKED anytime. Now that we are clear on that let me answer the question. If you BOTH are solid and in agreement on items 2-5 that I listed, then YES, there are physical actions that you and your partner can create a blanket consent agreement that it’s okay to do. The what, when, how, and where is up to you both to MUTUALLY decide upon. And, of course, can be REVOKED anytime by either party. But if I’m going to be completely honest. Many couples need to improve at ALL of these things, even if they’ve been together for a long time. It’s easy to get complacent and forget to romance your partner. It’s easy to treat your partner as your stress relief toy rather than as a person with complex thoughts, needs, and desires. It’s easy to forget that both parties are responsible for creating an environment where both want and willingness can thrive. That’s why being direct with what, how, why, and where you want your partner is the exact opposite of a mood killer. Making it your goal to get that “yes” because they want to and not just because they are willing kicks things up a notch. So yes, there are instances where blanket consent is appropriate. Caption : After I was rescued from being kidnapped I didn’t want to speak about what happened with anyone, I wanted to hide those nine months away, and pretend they didn’t happen. Even though my head knew none of it was my fault my heart still felt embarrassment and shame over the vast amounts of sexual abuse I experienced. At the time I didn’t know anyone else who openly shared they had been raped or violated, and no one took the time to explain to me that there is a difference between sexual abuse/rape versus enthusiastic consenting intimacy. Since then I experienced more life, fell in love, got married, had a family, and learned that rape and true intimacy couldn’t be more different. This partnership with @mentionables is so important to me on a personal level, because I don’t want any other person to go through being raped and assaulted thinking it is the same as consenting intimacy. When engaging in physical intimacy I want people everywhere to realize the day and night difference, to feel safe, empowered, beautiful, sexy, and excited to engage with their partner instead of fear, lack of control, pain, danger, betrayal, or self loathing. Being able to enjoy every aspect of consenting relationships should be a basic human right. Being able to enhance romantic and passionate situations should be encouraged and embraced, and for me that means beautiful and sexy lingerie. When you are clearly informed and don’t feel obligated, manipulated, or coerced into saying yes, it is truly a word that brings freedom. A wholehearted “yes” is reality changing. Caption : Last night I spoke at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s annual Hope Gala. They honor and recognize individuals who show extraordinary courage, passion, and commitment to finding children who have been abducted. They are without a doubt a huge inspiration to me and their impact is felt world wide. I first heard of “NCMEC” even before I was kidnapped, there was a news story on the missing children in America and requesting everyone to leave their Porch light on as if to say to all those missing children “welcome home.” I remember watching that news story and telling my parents we should keep our porch lights on. Never did I imagine I myself would in days later be one of those kids the porch lights were left on for. I applaud and stand in awe to their commitment to find every last missing child and never giving up hope. God Bless You. 🤍 @missingkids

Caption : One aspect of consent that trips people up is that you need to ask for it EVERY TIME. Why? Because people are dynamic and ever-changing. Just look at the picture I posted. Those two pictures are a week apart. One from last week, as we hit the slopes for one final time this season, and this week as we enjoy spring break in sunny California with family. Assuming that you never have to ask again for permission after receiving it one time would be like showing up to the desert decked out in a ski outfit. You assumed that all activities were the same and didn’t consider that there are a variety of options to participate in. Or, here is another example. It’s spring break. I’ve taken off most this week, life is easy and breezy, and I’m feeling generous. If my kids asked me to go out for ice cream right now, even though they’ve eaten plenty of sugar already, I’d probably say yes (don’t tell them! 😜). But if the situation was different. If it was dreary out, I was stressed with work, and we were all fighting a cold, and they pitched the ice cream outing idea, I’d say no. It’s not because I don’t love ice cream, but it’s not the right time. As we make practicing wholehearted consent a daily habit, you have to remember that people are intricate. They have good days, bad days, and meh days. They are affected by everyday life and how their bodies feel. Caption : Do you remember when your toddler learned how to say “no?” Once mine did, there was a long season where everything became a “no,” “no-no-no,” or “nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” It was exhausting because it seemed nothing could ever appease this little human, but looking back on it, I’m so glad that almost all kids go through a “no” stage. It sets them up for future boundary setting. Sadly, between toddlerhood and adulthood, many of us lose our ability to confidently say “no.” Maybe because our no’s were never respected, maybe we’re scared of rejection, or we just don’t want to deal with the conflict that will result if we say no. Whatever, the reason it’s time to take back our toddler voice and unapologetically start saying no. No, I don’t want to do that. No, I don’t like that. No, I’m not interested in that. Caption : A common takeaway in my research for this course is that many people’s parents NEVER gave them the sex talk, let alone talked about consent. They went blindly into relationships and just guessed how to have a healthy relationship. This led to a couple things. There was a group of people that had a string of bad relationships. They didn’t have the communication skills, self-awareness, or boundary-setting skills that make a relationship thrive. Instead, dishonesty, disrespect, and miscommunication colored their relationships. The other group (which was smaller, thank God) experienced abuse. They didn’t know that they had autonomy over what happens to their own body, they didn’t realize they could say no (even if they had initially said yes), and they didn’t understand their own self-worth and that they deserved to be treated better. Let’s not make the same mistake with our kids. I want to team up with parents and be another voice in their teen’s life banging the consent drum. I want teens to know that they are in charge of their body, that their wants, desires, and boundaries deserve to be respected, and most importantly, help them gain the CONFIDENCE to implement these things in their relationships. Caption : I am so excited to announce that @suutbirds has officially added our Smart Defense classes by @elizabethsmartfoundation and @malouffoundation as an accredited class right now this fall 2022 semester!!!! 13% of all college students reported to have experienced rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation. And college women are two times more likely to be sexually assaulted than robbed. These are very scary numbers, especially since they only count for a few years of a persons life! When you look at even larger time frames of a persons life the numbers and statistics only get scarier. Smart defense is a trauma informed self defense class, we have classes offered in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and will be offering them this coming year in Nevada as well. We hope to see these classes offered in other universities and colleges in the near future. Personal safety and student safety should always be a top priority. I hear from so many people that say, that their parents didn’t teach them about the birds and the bees let alone, sexual assault, or that they choice or body mattered. The conversation is DRAMATICALLY changing. Parents are rectifying that error and taking it a step further. Talking more about healthy relationships, decision making, communication, and even the red flags that their kids should watch out for. Grandparents are even sharing with me how they are intentionally having different types of conversations with their grandkids. Both these generations are addressing the abuse that they had received or were witness to, and putting their foot down. No more will they keep their mouth shut to save face. No more will they be quiet to protect people. The people that need protecting are the victims NOT the perpetrators. You combine that momentum with Gen Z and Alpha’s big hearts and determination to make this world a better place for all and sexual violence will hopefully be a thing of the past. I’m hopeful. Together we are changing the conversation. Together we are making this world a better place.

In Minnesota in 2019, a 14-year-old girl sent an explicit photo to a boy she liked. It disappears, so it’s safe, right? Well, the boy screenshotted and shared it without her permission. She was charged with distribution of child p*rnography (child sexual abuse material). A conviction, or even a guilty plea to a lesser charge, would require her to spend 10 years on the s3x offender registry. Protecting kids matters. Caption : Last week in my posts I had a lot of parents share the concern that their kids aren’t showing any interest in romance (no crushes, not curious about kissing or sex, etc.). So bringing the topic of consent up seems odd. They especially don’t want to put ideas in their kids mind! I get it. It may seem like your kid is light years away from having a crush, but I’m telling you it’s time to lay the foundation down and talk about consent (and frankly even if they aren’t interested they have friends that are, the concepts are not foreign!). One nonsexual way I talk to my kids about consent is using animals. Explaining body boundaries and appropriate touching with the phrases, “tails are not for pulling” and “gentle pats” were repeated ad nauseum. I also talk about animals’ body language to show when cuddles would be appropriate or not. “Look at puppies ears! What are they saying?” Alright other experienced parents, let’s hear your advice. Caption : When I came up with the idea to create a consent course, my goal was that it would help minimize the amount of sexual assault that happens. I’ve come across too many scenarios where: -People didn’t realize they could say no, (even to their spouse). -People who had disclosed that they’d been assaulted yet were met with blame because they were wearing a particular outfit, at an event, or even under the influence, etc. So they just lived with the hurt and shame. -They didn’t realize they were assaulted because they mistook coercion for consent. But consent has so much more to do with staying safe from assault and abuse. Consent is a crucial principle that should be applied in various aspects of our lives to ensure autonomy, respect, and healthy relationships. This week over on Instagram, I did a free Consent Education Week. Yes, we learned how we could better our consent practice to safe from sexual assault, but I learned so much more from my guests. -The importance of sharing our stories. We can find a lot of healing in knowing that we aren’t alone. -How media shapes how we view consent, even just everyday relationships. -How being an active bystander makes a difference! – How can we create an open line of communication with our kids and teens so they will come to us when the bad stuff happens -How self-defense, just like consent, is a perishable skill, if we want to be good at them, we got to make it a lifelong practice. Caption : So why did I write a course on sexual consent? Honestly, because in my work, I’ve heard the following stories way too often. -One partner “love bombs” the other, overwhelming them with gifts, so the other partner feels obligated to do things they wouldn’t feel comfortable doing. Or, -A guy begs his girlfriend to have sex with them. After all the pleading, she finally gives in but feels awful about it. She cares for him deeply but wasn’t ready for that step. Or, -A wife feels she must have sex with her husband whenever he demands, even if she feels sick, is busy with other tasks, has just had a baby, isn’t in the mood, or plain doesn’t want to. Because if she doesn’t, he might lust over another woman, look at p*rn, or even have an affair. None of these situations are examples of truly consensual relations. They are examples of coercion and manipulation used to get people to give sexual favors. It’s not okay. At best, in these situations, it’s bad romance; at worst, it’s nonconsensual sex. We are so familiar with examples of sexual abuse and sexual victimization that we see on Lifetime Movies or hear in True Crime podcasts that we forget that the scenarios listed above can ALSO examples of abuse and victimization. And unfortunately, they are waaaaayyyyy too common. So we need to talk about what consent looks like and how it applies to all relationship stages.
