Pre-warning it’s explicit, sexually, at various times too – this doesn’t dominate the narrative (at all) but was a bit of a shock. Aside from the obvious “darker” concepts this story is also weighted with great friendships, loyalty & (surprisingly) romance & love! So in the end, it all balances out. Far-fetched but enticing; A beautiful young girl (Lotte) is found by a rather handsome stranger (David) washed up on the beach, half-drowned – I wondered if he was something to do with it. But the plot isn’t that obvious. It is confirmed she’s recently given birth but there’s no sign of the baby and to top it off she’s lost her memory! Luckily, Lotte is imminently identified by her close friends & family – thankfully she’s not so far from home. Sadly, her parents are undeniably cold & unsupportive given the traumatic circumstances (there’s history, explained, as to why) but people like her best friend Dale, are solid & there for her. As it goes, Dale is the next victim to be abducted with Lotte (yep, a double kidnapping, 2nd time around!) not many days after poor Lotte’s been found. This is a story about survival. The couple responsible for the terror are sanctimonious sick bastards – that’s me being kind. I’m not gonna tell you the ins & outs of the duo “whodunnit” because you can give it a read! But a backstory of corruption & adoption fraud unfolds! It is a strong 3.8/5 from me – 💯 held my attention & I found it easy to care for the characters. However, it did become a bit too absurd for believability towards the end. I know, I know, it’s fiction! Caption : #thehungergames #bookreview 📚 Fictional; teenagers killing each other, for entertainment sake. Wee bit of debate, online, re how old the reader should be 😬 Extraordinarily well-written. The characters have depth (even the ones who ain’t gonna last long) & the survivors are cleverly crafted with enticing potential for growth. I finished the last chapter shortly after closing David Nott’s War Doctor, so could’ve been slightly desensitised to how gory it was towards the end of The Hunger Games; a subconscious comparison. But, what stood out to me, more than bloodshed, was the complex love-story between Tributes, Peeta & Katniss, alongside the sheer devotion our strong female lead (Katniss Evergreen) has for her lil sister, Prim. Not to mention her loyalty to both family & friends. I love that Katniss actions a big “F you” to the corrupt system steering the wheel of fate. A brief synopsis is there’s a world split into 12 districts. Each district has its “role” to play in society which bleeds into the themes of class & social status. Annually, 2 “tributes” are (randomly) selected to take part in a reality tv show called “The Hunger Games” where the contestants ultimately fight for their lives. There are plenty of added twists & turns. Some of the chosen are young & naive, while others are older, wiser and/or have more of a physical advantage as their edge. The inequality & unjust distribution of resources is rife. Starvation, poverty & (once again) irrational human behaviour drives the narrative. It’s evident where the influence & insight for such astute writing, though imaginary, has come from… Suzanne Collins (the writer) father (Lieutenant Michael John Collins) was a US Air Force officer who served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. The Hunger Games is actually interactive, so the audience can pay to send gifts in for their favourite ones, which could ultimately save (or kill) a life – The Capitol (the rich) therefore exacerbate motive & manipulation. It’s harsh & extreme, but it appeals vastly to the dark appetite of the viewers – especially those who have more money than sense. I look forward to reading the next book in this trilogy! 💥 5/5

Women’s fiction & a well-written thriller ♥️ I highly recommend! * Arguably confusing at the start to ya getting your head around all the different characters/stories that are set to crossover, but bear with it, because it soon flows. Cecilia (mum of 3 girls & Tupperware selling business woman!) finds a letter in her loft. It’s from her Husband & says to open when he’s dead. He ain’t dead. Pandora’s box 📦 ♥️ would you open it?! The letter holds a confession which directly bleeds into the life of another central character & in doing so has a knock on affect, seeping into the world of more people you’ll be introduced to. * Feminine curiosity, secrets, guilt, coming of age, sex, identity crisis, murder, justice & letting go of the past. Choices & fate are also themes at the heart of this. * There are colourful dramas & tragedies seemingly all going on all at once – Tess, for example, returns to the area with her young son, because her husband (back home) has fallen in love with her cousin, Felicity. Tess ends up shagging the hot PE teacher 😂 Simultaneously you have the receptionist, Rachel, 60’s, who’s young daughter was murdered many years ago, adamant the PE teacher did it… * Set in a small community in Australia, modern day, the writer weaves in historical references to The Berlin Wall. And dips back & forth into the 80’s & 90’s when recalling certain memories. It’ll all make sense/tie up – give it a read! I probably need to read it a 2nd time to absorb/appreciate the genius of it to be honest. There’s something uniquely demonic about this neuro-immuno disease 🦠 … It keeps the victim prisoner & if you do NOT have “good” people (constantly) around you, it can be dangerous. Very dangerous. Jess is clearly blessed with a supportive family but when they’re not at her bedside 24/7, other monsters (sick bastards) see an opportunity. Other times it has a propensity to toy 🧸 with ya… dares ya to attempt to live a normal (ish) life… tempts you to create a memory with a friend/loved one… then comes down on your soul like a ton of bricks 🧱 & confines you to the bed; inflamed & in agony 🔥😖 Jess had a flu-like illness 🦠 & never recovered like many #millionsmissing – history has been on repeat 🔁 for far too long #LongCovid #medicalmisogyny * From the walls of her dark bedroom she’s eventually taken to hospital; a place which is meant to help you heal… be safe… far from it… Jess is only 15 years old – she’s barely lived a life when she’s struck. There’s definitely a coming of age feel to it but not as you’d expect. The style is chatty & super easy to read! Jess should never have had to experience what she did in our NHS hospitals. At any age. No one should. Please read!

Moreover, plot twist – she has “died” more than once… Set between Jamaica 🇯🇲 (unnamed Caribbean island 🏝️ ) England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Italy 🇮🇹 & Florida 🌺 – I had a mini virtual holiday. What’s not to love? At the ♥️ it’s about identity & excavating the past #familysecrets but def not ya average family drama 🎭 A bounteous narrative hopping from one gen to the next & one country to another 🌍 with a murder mystery rotting back on the island 🏝️ Before Covy dies (properly… like for the final time… 😂 cos death is final, right?) she makes a tape for her kids… her daughter (Benny) & son (Byron) aka B&B… siblings who’ve become estranged are brought together… We all get booted head first into a rocky ocean 🌊 – drown, swim 🏊‍♀️ backflip (kick & scream?)🐬 😂 Splish splash 💦 The author catches (with profound precision) what it is to be human; the tragedy & the beauty of life 🏄‍♀️ Surfing & swimming are two of the sports highlighted. The latter of which I’m a big fan #swimming #openwaterswimming Abandonment, domestic violence, rape, tradition, migration, estrangement & racism…it’s a rollercoaster of important & intense themes; Environmental awareness, LGBTQ & Black Lives Matter are also firmly planted at its core. Gambling addiction, alcoholism & I loved the powerful sentences swirling through this book 📚 💫 Clever. Very clever. I cannot write a review with out acknowledging the fierce friendship between Covy & her swim pal, Bunny 🐰 A multitude of engaging & interesting characters (Covy’s Chinese father Lin the gambler, Little Man the gangster & Pearl the kind-hearted surrogate Mother, just to name a few) WATCH it & READ it & BAKE @bake4mecfs * #bookrecommendations #baking

Caption : A silly 🙃 photoshoot in line with health improvements 🧡🤞 * Gothic! Secretive. Mystical. Georgian. And very Dickensian; old Charlie boy’s “Bleak House” vibes… A Meaty 🍖 chunk of a book 📖 which I sometimes dreaded going back to 😂 😂 BUT absolutely loved 🥰 it when I did! Family drama 🎭 amplified over a will, contracts & lawsuits – the toxicity bleeds 🩸 out within the living realm after death ☠️ *Division* at the heart ❤️ of it all… 18th Century, Cornwall, Bath, London – murder, conspiracy, a circus 🎪 of lies & unexpected “reveals” – skilfully directed… by the “cards” 🃏 & the author ✍️ Red (our young female heroine 💪) has never known her Mother (a mystery to be solved) & she travels with her Gypsy father 👨 ❤️ & doll utilising an ancient method called The Square of Sevens, to tell fortunes 🔮 for people in order to survive. Sadly poor little Red loses her Dad 💨 early on in the story & her wee doll gets thrown into the fire 🔥 😢 BUT “rebirth” after loss is the key 🔑 & focus… amongst this twisted tale investigating the truth of Red’s past… Thankfully 🙏 her father (a cunning man) befriended a scholar/gentlemen whom he encouraged/persuaded to take his daughter in – just before he popped his clogs. With the exchange of an important document 📃 💥 but rather than give much away… trust me when I tell you to read it… especially if you like the classics. The trials & tribulations Red goes through are both v.traumatic & exciting 🎆 all at once. She’s spirited & firey 🔥 & determined. The perfect protagonist. An intricate plot with unexpected twists & turns. Characters are colourful, conflicted, troubled, flawed & magnificently human… I’d def recommend it. Quite genius. Actually. Visually this would make a tasty period drama 🎭 tv series… #reading #readingtime #readmorebooks #bookstagram #booksbooksbooks #lovereading

Caption : #klaraandthesun #kazuoishiguro – just catching up on #bookrecommendations Jan was a cruel month re my health so here’s a hello 👋 to sunshine ☀️ as Feb carries us towards spring! 💛 “Do you believe in the human heart?” The soul? Moreover, could technology replicate it to “continue” the loved ones we lose… A story addressing intense concepts, written with such a calm tone 🧘‍♀️ All which is contrary to the ordinary course of nature makes this novel so gripping. Klara is our protagonist – an “artificial friend” programmed for teenagers. She observes humans (initially) from her shop window 🪟 🤖 until she is purchased by The Mother to be a companion for a young sickly girl called Josie; Josie’s illness is chronic & never named; arguably strikingly similar to #mecfs – a horrific life-limiting “exhaustion” which doesn’t give Josie much, if any, relief… In the novel the illness is supposedly triggered by something called “lifting.” Lifting is an artificial gene 🧬 editing; a fictional process which the kids are put through to make them “smarter.” This comes with certain risks, such as death & “living death” ☠️ aka #chronicillness There’s a “coming of age” love-story between Josie & the boy next door 🚪 called Rick; he’s one of the few teens who hasn’t been “lifted.” The fact Rick hasn’t undergone the lifting process puts a dampener on their potential future together; Rick is not allowed to attend the same college(s) as the “lifted.” Josie & Rick are navigating this. The Mother has lost her eldest daughter & is naturally protective over Josie; so much so that she considers the idea of Klara “continuing” as Josie, if Josie were to die… This is a really interesting topic which I’d have liked to read more on. It’s a strong theme within the story but isn’t necessarily the main idea 💡 Identity, Healing ❤️‍🩹 & Human Nature are the core elements, I’d say. The Sun plays an integral role as it directly charges Klara’s batteries 🔋 ☀️ I personally read the sun to be “hope.” ⛅️ god-like & eventually miraculous ❤️‍🩹 perhaps far-fetched – but poetic, symbolic – beautiful & uplifting. The story delves deeper than my review can offer; have a read!

Caption : 💥2nd book 📖 I’ve read by #elifshafak – Turkish/British novelist – once again, superbly executed ✍️ I recommend her as an author! From 13th century bullies, religious teachers, drunks prostitutes & poets to 21st century housewives & a modern day teen battling bulimia, it’s a colourful & diverse patchwork 🎆 🎇 Each chapter is narrated by one of the aforementioned characters providing a broad insight! The 21st century storyline is weaved in with the story of a 13th century “historic manuscript.” I’ve not really read anything like this before. The contemporary narrative is centred around “unhappy” housewife Ella Rubenstein (40’s) who lives with her (cheating) husband & middle-class kids. Ella works for literary agency, part-time, which is how she comes across a piece of writing ✍️ called “Sweet Blasphemy” by Aziz Z. A rather unexpected love story unfolds. His work is reflective of the friendship in 13th Century Konya, Turkey, between Rumi & Shams – true story. I learnt a lot about how love, peace ✌️ & spirituality are encoded in Islam ☪️ Spirituality, God, the power of Love & transformation… what’s not to like? Well, there’s also the concept of religion causing violence, division & murder. As more of an intellectual than a hopeless romantic 💘 I tend to use my brain 🧠 over my heart ❤️ to make most of my life decisions 😂 so the mother, Ella, walking out on her family, the way she did, certainly didn’t sit right with me – at all 👀 💩 But, equally there were some profound & beautiful moments ruled by the heart 💜 & beautifully written paragraphs which truly made me feel #compassion #empathy The momentum towards the end was particularly impressive. I continually cared about what happened next 💫

I reply with things like bake for @bake4mecfs 😊 and if you know anyone with #chronicillness just be there in what ever capacity you’re able to. It will be appreciated. But may also depend somewhat on the ability they have to enable contact. Remember #severeme is so brutal, maintaining friendships can be extraordinarily implausible for the person suffering. Even “mild” to moderate ME/CFS is extremely limiting. Be kind. Be patient. Raise awareness for their cause 💙 and perhaps offer services for the family who are often also affected? @smileforme is one of my favourite 🤩 charities because they send out gifts 🎁 to #mecfswarriors & their carers too ♥️ * Some of us with illnesses from the list on the @bake4mecfs website are so desperately unwell that we are just getting through the minutes – while others are able to do a little or quite a bit more… we are all still in a very difficult predicament to say the least. Caption : A “quirky” coming-of-age, slow-burning love story… slash historical murder mystery? With a weirdly wicked wit. Heavy material presented in a lighthearted manner. Loved it! 💥 The abuse (physical, mental & sexual) make it a bit haunting (at times) to read – but the author 🖊️ utilises an “off-beat” yet consistent humour, so you don’t get too “caught up” in the darker spots; skilful with out negating the seriousness of the aforementioned ⬆️ Occasional parts of the plot a bit patchy?? BUT I confess I read at “full speed” cos I was addicted to the style of the storytelling, so perhaps I just needed to slow down 🤔 I literally burnt through this 🏍️ 💫 Lead protagonist, Alex, is very, very likeable. She has mental health problems #skitsophrenia #paranoia – battling daily to decipher what’s real & what’s not… A magic 8 ball & her handy camera 📸 supposedly help her make decisions. But neither can prove IF the little boy she met at the lobster 🦞 tank (as a kid) is the same teen (Miles) who has her heart ♥️ skip a beat at her new school. Spoiler alert… he is! #love #romancebooks NB – Alex actually set free the lobsters 🦞 FREE in the store as a small child 😂 😭 🙌 – or did she? Obviously, all somewhat “sensationalised” to make it an exciting read. But, I didn’t mind that all. Alex’s starting at a new school 🏫 while attempting to hide 😶‍🌫️ her differences from peers. Friendship & loyalty become strong 💪 concepts in this story, as does bullying. Miles, the “eventual” love interest, is a young man navigating the world with undiagnosed mild autism? The two go together extraordinarily well. A decent range of complex characters & relationships throughout, but theirs is the soul of the book 📖 I’m not going to give away the story because there are twists & turns I want you to experience. Stereotypical highschool students such as the nerd, cheerleader, jock ect are present; though “done a million times before,” this is a unique piece of literature executed in a way I really enjoyed reading #bookrecommendations

Sometimes I need to sit (or lay down) and often I need to elevate my legs. By wearing this 🌻 people understand I might need some assistance 😊 and/or the symbol stops a person from approaching to try to prevent me from putting my feet up on an extra chair 🪑 💥 which is nice 👌 * I read recently the sunflower is not regarded as a single flower but a bunch of flowers! Caption : #theshadowsister 3rd book 📖 of #thesevensistersseries @lucindarileybooks * This book dips in n’ out of different eras, as the protagonist attempts to piece together a fascinating puzzle 🧩 #historylovers Each book in the series focuses on “one” of the adopted sisters 👯‍♀️ Following the death of their “father” Pa Salt 🧂the women are left with letters & clues 🕵️‍♀️ as to exactly where they’ve come from, if they do do wish to further explore. This one ☝️ is all about Star ⭐️ A rocky rollercoaster of emotions with lots of growth & it’s always “educational” in some way – feeding my big fat hungry 🤤 history-obsessed brain! Because Riley mixes “real life” characters in with her made up ones. Then I go Google them 🕵️‍♀️ 😂 Beatrix Potter was featured in this story! Loved that! Not to mention Alice Keppel, Violet Trefusis & Vita Sackville West. The latter few I’d not heard of! But learnt lots about. Star aka Asterope is the sister we piggy 🐷 back aka “The Shadow Sister” & “least brightest” star out of the 7 in the Pleiades cluster 🌌 BUT “closer up” Asterope is made from 2 weaker stars – the metaphor for her discovering her “other side” 😜 Fear not, ain’t as dark as it sounds… she is just finding her confidence & independence – all the good stuff! There is the theme of Star & her next in line sister CeCe’s codependent relationship too, but it doesn’t steal the show by any means. I’d say complex LOVE ❤️ & “the fear of LOVE” (especially off the back of trauma) is at the heart of this piece. I refuse to divulge/give the plot away, please just read – you won’t regret it! Orlando, the owner of the rare bookshop 📚 & his brother Mouse are both individual characters you cannot forget. Plus little Rory, a deaf 🧏‍♂️ young boy who steals hearts is another adding colour to this story. Lots of wonderful worlds rolled into one… I enjoy escaping into the books… even though this was set in my lovely England & didn’t whisk me off to anywhere hot 🥵 I can look 👀 forward to going to Australia with CeCe in the next one 💥 💫 #bookreview #booklover #bookrecommendations #reading

Caption : Loved as much (maybe more!) than the 1st book 📖📚 Super brief synopsis of #thesevensisters series – a rich mystery 🤑 man called Pa Salt 🧂 adopts 6 young girls, naming each after a star ⭐️ from 🌌 The Seven Sisters constellation 👯‍♀️ 💥 the 7th sister remains missing… Each book takes the reader on a separate journey – delving into each sister’s past! This is book 2! * #thestormsister intros the 2nd sister, Ally aka Alcyone, “the leader,” who’s namesake in Greek mythology watches over the Mediterranean Sea 🌟 keeping the waters safe! Ally is a strong 💪 & inspiring female sailor 🌊 PLUS she is a gifted flutist! 🎼 The theme of true love, grave loss, friendship & family history is once again embedded. Talking of bed 🛌 I’ve had a few days in it 🙄 since doing too much #mecfs #postexertionalmalaise but on the mend ❤️‍🩹 since resting up now! Thankfully able to escape via literature to Germany 🇩🇪 Switzerland 🇨🇭 & time travel 🧭 * Music (classical) is a central theme! I read the author trained as a ballet 🩰 dancer from 3-16 years & Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite 🎶 was always one of her faves! Since listening 👂 I know why. Music accompanying this reel is Morning Mood in E major. * Based on both fictional characters & real historic figures, again, which I absolutely love, Riley’s work is extraordinarily well researched. As we learn Ally’s past on a tumultuous & epic adventure of self discovery, we dip into the history of families during the 1800’s, 1940’s #ww2 returning to the modern day; being 2007, when it’s written. It’s a real rollercoaster 🎢 written with such heart ❤️ & I’m grateful for the Halvorsen Family Tree drawn up at the start. Yes, at times I did need to flick back to it! * What struck me most about the story was Ally’s ability to pick herself up after not just one but two tragic losses. Death of our loved ones hits hard. But, as this author understands, in us, they live on. #book #love #lovereading #sailing #sea #romance #adventure

Caption : The book eclipsed the movie “a thousand times over.” Skip the film and read the novel. I do not know enough about the history of Afghanistan but reading this has made me seek to learn more. The son of a rich Afghanistan Merchant, Amir, steers the narrative in the first person, introducing us to his “best friend” Hassan & their complex relationship. A local kite flying championship leads to a shocking & horrific “event” which haunts the boys, the reader & any person who comes to know what happened. This is book about friendship, family relationships, cultural differences, power, abuse and war. There is a strong reference to the divide between those born into money and those born without. Redemption sits at the core of the writing. It’s easy to read, informative & mind altering. Set in the 1970’s when the Russians invade, Amir and his father (Baba) have to flee the country and end up creating a new life in America. Hassan, his family & the memories of “the event” are subsequently left behind. That is, until an old friend (ex business partner of Baba) places a call to Amir, who is now an adult living his life in California with his wife Soraya. The couple are dealing with infertility & Amir’s father is dying, but something else from the past eats away at him. The call from Rahim Kahn ultimately provides Amir with a way to “be good again.” Upon returning to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 naturally Amir feels like he’s “home”but it is not long (under the Taliban) that Amir realises he is in fact a tourist. I read the kites 🪁 represent freedom & individuality – along with the guilt & shame that plagues Amir. It’s a very powerful & poetic story. Amir becomes a successful writer ✍️ 💥 living his dream. But what pulls your heart hardest is when he becomes an unexpected father. The relationship between Amir & his own father is troubled, so there’s something profound & extraordinarily layered with the way in which Amir eventually becomes a parent #books #booklover #bookrecommendations #love #lovereading #thekiterunner

Give it a go… * I used to devour scripts weekly but in my 5th year with the illness ME/CFS (despite significant improvement 🍀 😜 ) acting 🎭 for now is on hold! People ask if I miss it? No, not particularly. I miss running 🏃‍♀️ around a park more. As mysterious as Pa Salt may be, he’s extraordinarily smart, measured & meticulous 🤔 Not only has he aligned his own funeral arrangements (in secrecy) but he has also left behind letters for his daughters, inclusive of clues 🕵️‍♀️ to their original heritage, with an “encouragement” to further explore the past – Each book 📖 delves deep into the soul of each sister, but the 7th sibling has always been missing?! As one of 7 siblings myself I was immediately intrigued. Combined with my love for the night sky 🌌 & space? I wonder if this was written for me 😂 Moreover, a huge chunk of this first book is set in Rio!! Brazil 🇧🇷 is a country I’ve always wanted to visit. Maia, the eldest sister, is the protagonist. This is her journey. The Seven Sisters is about love, loss & identity is sprinkled with a mixture of fictional & factual characters! We get to play in Paris & Geneva too 😜 what’s not to love? If you’re a sucker for romance, art, creativity, throwing caution to the wind & impulsive adventure, then this is a story for you. I’m not gonna spoil it by saying much more. It’s an evenly paced page turner but one minute it’s 9pm 🕘 then next it’s 1.40am! Caption : A heartwarming book 📖 written with a splash of good humour, a spoonful of love, stirred with a clear value for life; positive ageing bubbles 🫧 throughout, which I absolutely love! @joanna_nell_writer I read most of the latter half of this book with my Nan sat reading next to me on the sofa 🛋️ #memories but it’s also been on a couple of adventures to the oxygen tank #mecfsawareness #msawareness AND a lucky 🍀 dip in the pool in line with some fortunate and truly amazing health improvements 😊 * Chloe, the doctors 🥼 daughter (teen) volunteers to work at the hospital cafe, with two older ladies; Helen the “prickly” Manageress and Joy her dedicated tea-serving soldier – a little clumsy but lovable! * Despite being dated, the Majorie Marshal Memorial Cafeteria, has character, charm and provides a safe space for families who have loved ones at St Jude’s. * With the threat of a “modern” chain cafe called Platter (vegan , organic, gluten & dairy free 💥- but you’ll need to remortgage your house for a cup of coffee) the three women unite to get the community on board and help keep scones, jam, cream and a cuppa English tea with cow’s milk available. Part of plan B, once Platter is up and running, is to eradicate the old cafe 😢 * While sometimes it’s important to let go and know when to walk away, it’s also just as vital to know when to hold on and refuse point blank to give up ⬆️ The tea ladies address both, head on! And it is mighty 💪 uplifting to read! * This is a book about unlikely friendships, loyalty, birth and death, facing fears and being true to oneself. Small acts of kindness and compassion sprinkled through out, make it a truly special book. Highly recommend! Caption : Collins is an incredible storyteller & also a poet. Her writing is captivating with a talent to slice into the skin of her reader 🔪 🩸 Set in the early 1800’s (mostly London, partly Jamaica) Frannie Langton, “the slave, whore, seductress” is on trial for the murder of her master Mr Bentham & his “beautiful” Wife, Meg the Magpie; who just so happens to “collect people.” The “collection of people” in reality & metaphorically motors this storyline; read the book to better understand the #haunting depth of this. Collins drip feeds her reader the truth – withholding terrible snippets of her protagonist’s traumatic past – until it all spills out at the end. Tension is elevated as even Frannie doesn’t know if she committed the crimes herself. Mrs Linux (Head Housekeeper) found Frannie Langton in a “deep sleep” next to the bloody body of Meg ☠️ Moreover, killing an unborn child also bleeds unforgivably into this narrative too. Meg Benham’s autopsy reveals she was recently with child🤰 💥 big question – who’s the Daddy? The book is undoubtedly better than the series; richer, more detailed; I’d still 💯 recommend watching the series; well executed with some passionate performances 💥 But, first & foremost, read this book! Love, Control, Racism, Slavery, Abuse, Indoctrination, Marriage & Murder ink the pages 📖 A unique (& superbly written) 19th century murder mystery. Caption : When I discovered this 📖 at a 2nd hand charity stall, I smiled. “Small but very determined, Sophie loves animals & is going to be a lady farmer when she grows up.” A bossy girl at the heart of this novel provided me with a protagonist to relate to, as a kid! When Sophie wanted something, she made sure she got it; even poor Andrew at school was coerced into agreeing to marry her… because he had a farm 🙊 With two brothers (twins!) Matthew & Mark (roughly the same age as my older bro & cousin) I must’ve felt heard… especially reading about footballs ⚽️ being accidentally kicked at her head. I preferred to hide away with a book than join in horseplay 😆 Yet, it has to be said, a lot of my backbone, persistence & spirit stems from having a brother only 12 months (almost to the day) older than me #irishtwins Children need books 📚 & they must be read to & taught to read as soon as possible; stories open up a world of opportunity ❤️ & books have been a light to help me get through some of the darkest moments! #dickkingsmith one of my fave authors growing up – he wrote Babe the sheep pig 🐽 Along with #roalddahl 💥 Then I found #rlstine #goosebumps 😊 I actually think I had more fun re-reading this in my 30’s 😂 Sophie’s cat, a lady cat called Tomboy, her rabbit Beano, a dog named Puddle (and eventually a pony called Lucky!) help to drive this beautiful narrative. Caption : Mary Seacole writes her own book 📖 in 1857! #thewonderfuladventuresofmrsseacoleinmanylands For those who don’t know, Seacole is the lesser known Black British Nurse who worked around the same time (& long before!) Florence Nightingale – our Lady with the lamp 🪔 💥 Seacole was a mother (on the Crimean battlefield!) to many of our British 🇬🇧soldiers, officers, lieutenants during the war with Russia 🇷🇺 & in her hometown of Jamaica 🇯🇲Kingston too. Her warmth, humour, spirit & personality shine throughout. A Doctress, cook & savvy business woman; despite often finding herself bankrupt 🙄 largely due the fools who took advantage of her. But not once does Seacole play the victim. I LOVE 💗 her book! Angry 😡 I never learnt about this fabulous force of nature at school. I also never learnt about Nightingale. Believe it or not! But Seacole, unlike Nightingale, disappeared from society for years & years after death. Finally (with some ongoing support & fighting💥) she’s getting her long overdue recognition. A glorious statue has been erected outside St Thomas Hospital 🏥 facing the Big Ben 🕰️ – the creativity behind it is mind blowing! I read a couple of other books off the back of this which I also highly recommend #blackhistory Seacole has had to somewhat play up to her White Victorian reader of the time – at the height of British Imperialism during the 19th century when racial & gender prejudice was rife; withholding some of her true history/early life – perhaps to adhere to the digestive system of her Victorian audience 🤔 Further explained by @helenrappaport 📕 #insearchofmaryseacole – which is an absolute must read! Rappapprt is a fantastic historian with a captivating writing style drawing you in while remaining very easy to follow. For the fastest (yet still beautifully informative) read I suggest you pick up #twolivesflorencenightingaleandmaryseacole by Huntley. A collection of horrific events & circumstances from real people who received inadequate & inhumane treatment in hospitals in the 60’s – I pause; this controversial book was compiled in the 1967 & I am sad to contemplate that we have many similar issues left on repeat 🔁 2023. The focus here is in the ignorance of modern psychiatric & geriatric treatment & care, with out negating the fact that the staff can often be in “crisis-mode” dealing with more work than workload; but when kindness, manners & compassion disappear, Robb does not sympathise with excuses. Whistleblowers are condemned & accused of exaggeration. I wish ❤️ 1/2 these statements were guilty of hyperbole; they are not! Discrediting evidence, falsely, is a dangerous “go to” strategy. Robb meticulously lists the abuse, highlighting how “turning a blind eye 👁️” is the norm. Surprise visits reveal surprising facts & the thieves/perpetrators & “carers” are caught out. Many will be aware of the selflessness & “patience of a saint” associated with being a “good” nurse/carer, but one rotten apple 🍎 in the barrel is minacious & evidence over the years proves there’s often more than one preying on the vulnerable. Robb’s obituary reads: “Fearless champion of the cause of old people in hospitals.” Robb’s legacy was significant: as Abel-Smith said in 1990, “For one woman […] to suddenly do so much in such a short period – and tragically, to die so soon – is a remarkable story.”

Caption : New bookshelf 😂 🥮🥮 #bookreview * I read this after Thomas’s book #threadneedle & naturally compared the two; #thehedgewitch is not as a dark (or complex) as the other – which sort of set it on the back foot 🦶 for me. Perhaps a younger audience targeted? However, did I enjoy it? Yes! Thomas’s writing style just captivates me every time. Mystical. Magical. Right up my witchipoo street. A very easy read! Rowan Greenfinch, a teen witch (protagonist) is an extremely likeable “misfit.” We get whisked off to Wales with Rowan to stay with her crazy Aunt Winifred for the summer. Winifred is an eccentric Hedge witch 🧙‍♀️ dealing with plants 🌱 & roots galore – her new boyfriend (the aunt’s not Rowan’s!) is a fab forager & together they bake mushroom 🍄 pies 🥧 that make ya float high. It’s a fun cottage for the adults but Rowan’s mostly put to work by Winnie & craves friendship with peers her own age & a first kiss/summer romance; def a coming of age feel to it. Eventually, Rowan does make friends with the likes of Laila who sneaks around under the moonlight & introduces Rowan to a couple of lads in the village. I really liked the references to #stonehenge & want to visit one day! The witches live in the tiny town surrounded by the normal folk & should be mindful when (& how!) their magic is used; this is a tale about breaking rules, self discovery, acceptance & it’s glittered with magic 🪄 I just needed more of it tbh & perhaps a few more layers 🧅 💫

Caption : 2nd 📕 I’ve read by #alyssacarson & enjoyed it just as much! Similar concept to the 1st 📖“So You Want To Be An Astronaut?” – vamped up a notch! Carson is the youngest astronaut in training with an impressive list of achievements by nineteen; skydiver, pilot, graduate from Advanced Space Academy, aquanaut & more as she braces her early 20’s. But, this isn’t a book to brag about outstanding accomplishments; it’s been written (& written very well) to guide others who have an interest in becoming an astronaut and/or a passion/desire to work a job related to anything to do with outer space. Even if you aren’t chasing Mars, I’d highly recommend reading 📖 Why? Because it’s full of fun informative facts about our own Earth 🌍 & universe, plus it’s extremely easy to read. But, moreover, this book serves as a magic gem 💎 with an uplifting positive & enlightening message to encourage everyone to be bold, to persevere 😓 & to never give up when attempting to reach a goal; what ever that goal may be! Carson acknowledges her luck 🍀 & privileges with out down playing her tremendous hard work & dedication as she practices what she preaches. Personally I think a book like this would do great stuff if it were rolled out into schools; it’s extraordinarily empowering & educative. The blueprint could be applied to a person attempting to follow many dreams/career aspirations. Caption : Blown away (again)💥 🪄great sequel; same 3 protagonists, Potter, Weasley & Grainger; 1 summer wiser & the challenges a shade darker 🐍 ☠️ * Grainger’s put on the back foot when she’s 1 of the 3 students to get petrified (& hospitalised!) – the lads take the lead in this “attempted assignation” mystery 🤷‍♀️ I can’t say murder mystery cos (thankfully!) no one actually dies 📸 🐈 * Hermione’s dedication to research up to the moment she’s “caught off guard” leaves extra clues for Harry & Ron; it’s a lil bit of a whodunit! I love Hermione as much as she loves the school library 🙃 📚 * Plot is def more complex 📖 – richer & chocker with more magic ⚠️ Several arch’s come together at the end 🤤 & NEW characters (like Dobby, the crazy lil’ House Elf! & Moaning Murtle the toilet 🚽 ghost 👻) add splashes of unexpected fresh colour to it all 💫 – from Tom Riddle’s magic diary 📔 (which appears empty but can actually write back to the holder!) to the screeching Mandrakes (plants!) saving lives & gigantic spiders 🕷️ & snakes 🐍 – you won’t be disappointed! * At the heart ♥️ is this tale of a “chamber of secrets” – supposedly existing within the school 🏫 Fear this term 😨 spreads fast when it seems the chamber is proved real & moreover has been “unlocked” – someone/something is on a “wishful” killing spree? References to “half bloods” & “pure bloods” steer the narrative; what wants to clear the school of kids who don’t come from a family of full blooded 🩸 Wizards & Witches?? * Hierarchy, racism & indoctrination seep in, yet the book remains loyal to its roots; friendship, doing the right thing & “rules & rebellion” soar through the skies 🌌 🚘 💥 Another easy read… couldn’t put it down! Caption : It’s taken me this long to discover the magic 🪄 of #harrypotter * May have missed the Potter boat as a kid ⛴️ But in my 30’s I’ve got a first class seat 🚂 on the Hogwarts express #peterpansyndrome #hooked 😂 * 3 young protagonists, Potter, Weasley & Grainger, 1st year students, drive the narrative… but this ain’t ya standard high school & they’re not your ordinary kids – #hogwartsofwitchcraftandwizardry * This is a fantasy book about Adventure, Courage, Morals & Witchcraft & Wizardry, of course! Not to mention a fierce focus on the power of Friendships & Loyalty. I love it! * There’s the “normal” world where Muggles (aka humans) operate; mostly based in London/Southern England – then there’s another dimension co-existing, where the “extraordinary” dwell 🧙‍♀️ 🦄 or get recruited… * The plot thickens as we discover a Dark Lord plagues the future existence of both places, ultimately – he who must not be named; Voldemort (created from the French words “flight of death”) craves power & isn’t afraid to abuse it. Potter has a 😶‍🌫️ history which makes him famous & it involves the Dark Lord & skipping his own death ⚡️ * Harry (& many others) weren’t always necessarily aware they were going to be whisked off to a “magic” school. Some kids who grew up in the world of magic, such as Ron, are a more prepared but it’s a huge learning curve ahead; beginning of a coming-of-age feel to it with the peer pressure & bullying too. * I love the trio, but it’s the teachers at the school who truly stand out; especially the headmaster, Dumbledore & the wonderful gamekeeper, Hagrid – my partner often calls me Hagrid on days I’m overdue a hair wash 🤔 😂 * Rather than re-tell the plot (which so many likely already know!) I want to reiterate the pure genius of this writing ✍️ & encourage “non” Harry Potter fans to grab a copy & join me in reading the entire series! * Imagination 💭 & curiosity are on fire 🔥 in this page turner; moving staircases, talking chess pieces, spell-bound mirrors, pet owls 🦉 & more… so much more… 💥 A finely tuned plot & some deliciously complex characters #professorsnape left me hungry for the next book 📖 yum yum 😋 chocolate frogs 🐸

Like there’s an itch that needs to be scratched. * The story flicks back & forth between the past & present, sort of like a modern day light 💡 switch; very easy to keep up with. ⬆️ The chapters alternate between a young girl called Amber re-telling her “childhood” at Black Rabbit Hall & our protagonist Lorna (early 30’s) who is staying in the house 🏡 while she trials out the “bridal suite.” There is a surprising coming-of-age feel to it; but with the sudden death of Amber’s mother & later her baby brother, her teen years go dark quickly… 👻 Unprecedented twists & turns, skeletons in the closet & somewhere something raw (or rotting?) to be exposed. * Well developed characters of various ages & spectacular writing – poetic yet linear. LOVE this book 📖 Family toxicity, loyalty, blood vs water, mental health & death… once again grief poaches centre stage but within this novel plagued by great loss there’s something to be gained.
