Jordan Casteel Instagram - Last night... There are few words that can express the joy thats spilling over into today.

I’m beyond grateful to be in this community — not only with the brilliant artists now on view @brooklynmuseum in Giants — but all of us out here making work and committing ourselves to our practice.

Huge thank you to @aliciakeys and @therealswizzz for embracing us all so wholly. Your vision and commitment is priceless and game changing. 💞

Much appreciation to everyone involved 🙏🏽💫

Jordan Casteel Instagram - [Naima’s Gift (Deon, Kym, and Noah), oil on canvas, 94 x 80 inches, 2023]

The day I spent with Deon, Kym @chambersvintage and Noah will forever be ingrained in my heart. The sun was out and they had waited several seasons for this moment — when their garden would be in full bloom.

This painting would start a body of work reckoning with my own dedication to the notion of seeding — using the garden to process my own journey.

“…Its bloom honors the cyclical nature of life, perennially flourishing and impermanent…”

I look forward to sharing this body of work with you at Frieze Los Angeles 2024 | Booth A10 @caseykaplangallery Feb 29 - March 3 ❣️

Jordan Casteel Instagram - The horror’s and atrocities that can be committed by fellow humans is baffling. At a time of tremendous loss and suffering, my mother reminded me “it takes immense bravery to consider bringing life into this world.”

I answered that I had to believe that young people have always been at the center of movement and change — and that alone is very much worth the investment in young life.

Here’s the thing, when I was newly diagnosed with Lupus at 18 I was told I could never and should never have kids. My body would undoubted betray me and I should wipe the thought from my brain. So I did. For 15 years I did.

I now know a broad statement of that nature is incorrect — it’s incredibly nuanced — as most things in life are.

Meeting my partner opened me up to consider the whole spectrum of options more freely — placing us on a path towards surrogacy. That was almost 3 years ago — and despite every attempt to trust the systems in place and move through the process, we have been met with fits and starts that at times has broken my heart in ways I never thought possible.

This is not to say I am without hope, I know we will find ourselves exactly where we are meant to be when the time is right. But boy, figuring this out on our own has been one of the hardest parts. There is so much I wish I had known. So much I wish I had asked.

Being vulnerable on this platform is not something I lean into — it can feel so far from real human connection. But I do think I’d like to share more about this journey here — in hopes that connections can be made and wisdom shared.

Jordan Casteel Instagram - 400 people in attendance and I might have hugged 95% of them lol

The opening of “Field of view” at @hillartfoundation was beyond anything I could have imagined. 10 years of paintings on the walls and 10 years of people I love in the room — a literal dream. ☁️ 💫

Huge thank you to the multitude of people who made this exhibition as magical as it is. Jordan Casteel Instagram - In 1990 my grandmother Margaret Buckner Young finished her 14 years of service as the first woman of color on the Board of the @metmuseum to be present with her daughter (Mama C) and grandchildren in Denver, Colorado. I always felt incredibly close to her and that has been true even now.

It was September 14, 1967 that she was elected onto the Board of Trustees.

Yesterday, December 11, 2023 I stepped directly in her footsteps, and was elected onto the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees.

No one could have ever told this young free spirit that she would one day, follow the families linage back to New York. A place where, like Grams she’d dedicate her life to being in service to art and people.

I look forward to being of service by listening, learning and thoughtfully engaging.

Jordan Casteel Instagram - Phew. 35.

Time is a precious and miraculous thing. It’s been really hard lately. But it’s also been glorious.

Today I was reminded of the light.

The beauty and peace I’ve found in the Catskills mountains — the people who have helped make this place home.

The friends and family we have and have made. It’s the community that sustains me — the people who wrap their arms around me and say “We got you. We see you. We love you”

I love you too.

It takes a village.

Jordan Casteel Instagram - Grief/Spring.
Jordan Casteel Instagram - Very proud of this presentation of 6 new works.

A true labor of love — pushing my own vulnerability forward — capturing my mourning, care, and cultivation towards motherhood. Considering the expansiveness of our journeys towards an experience not solely tied to our individual bodies and their perceived capacities.

Thank you @caseykaplangallery @friezeofficial for the opportunity to create peace and pause on an otherwise hectic world and environment.

Jordan Casteel Instagram - These incredibly intimate and personal paintings made this summer in my Upstate NY garden are now on view in @caseykaplangallery ‘s physical and online viewing rooms.

THROUGH DECEMBER 22, 2023

“Jordan Casteel presents a series of seven intimately scaled oil paintings, composed en plein air. Zinnias, nasturtiums and dahlias are rendered true-to-scale and at peak bloom.

The floral bounties of Casteel’s own cultivated landscape mark the establishment of new routines and relationships within the community of her rural surroundings in Upstate New York. Composed in situ and immersed in the lush gardens of her home, Casteel positions herself on the ground and props the canvas in her lap. With a narrow field of vision, vegetal microcosms of the vast surrounding landscape are isolated. Casteel translates observations with confident and swift brushstrokes in real time rather than documenting on-the-go impressions amid the hustle of daily life in Harlem, NY, to be mapped and painted later. Petals and stems are built up through thick swathes of paint, memorialized in a flick of the wrist.

The tightly cropped compositions call to mind the artist’s ‘subway’ series, an ongoing body of work from 2015 that captures the candid exchange between commuters on the NYC subway. Relatable connections are registered with the informality of a gesture, from overlapping legs to clasped hands. The intrinsic bond between parent and child, projected with an outstretched arm in Within Reach(2019), is paralleled and personified in Garden (Dahlia) (2023). Drooping buds traverse each other, resting their weight on their counterpart to form a living trellis.”

To view them in the gallery, tell the front desk you’d like to see Jordan Casteel’s Recent Landscapes in the viewing rooms — only after you look at the beautiful @carolinekent1 show. 💞

Jordan Casteel Instagram - Lupine | Oil on canvas | 50 x 40 | 2024

…

Opening reception: Tuesday, July 23, 6–8pm

On view: July 24 - September 21, 2024

@pilarcorrias is pleased to present “Nature Painting Nature” a group exhibition of works by Jordan Casteel, Jane Freilicher, Grace Hartigan, Leiko Ikemura, Francesca Mollett, Sabine Moritz and Vivien Zhang.

Guest curated by Lydia Yee, “Nature Painting Nature” takes a multigenerational look at artists for whom the forms of nature offer a way to translate personal experience, memory and direct observation into paint.

…

Jordan Casteel’s recent paintings are based on the seasonal blooms in her garden in the Catskill region in New York, where she has recently relocated from New York City. Three salmon pink blooms in Lupine (2024) – named for the mistaken belief that the flower ‘wolfs’ nutrients from the soil – emerge from the foreground against an abstract field of green that separates them from the flowering trees in the background. A highly personal subject, Casteel’s flowers can be viewed as self-portraits: ‘I see my own labor in it. It’s not about observing the things that are most true for you in this moment. It’s about observing the things that were most true for me.’

A highly personal subject, Casteel’s flowers can be viewed as self-portraits: ‘I see my own labor in it. It’s not about observing the things that are most true for you in this moment. It’s about observing the things that were most true for me.’
Jordan Casteel Instagram - Starting the day with a skip in my step. PO Box this AM had a nice surprise…

There’s something really special about this... As a young girl, I remember @scholastic art magazine always being around.

I later became an educator and in a full circle way have seen the power in sharing a multitude of stories with young minds.

@chambersvintage

For her solo presentation with Casey Kaplan at Frieze Los Angeles, Jordan Casteel presents a series of new figurative, landscape and still-life paintings that render universal demonstrations of nurture, ever-bountiful and enduring.

Interchangeable as setting and subject, Casteel depicts plant life in layered swaths of color that echo the artist’s gestural portrayals of the body. Fronds and petals overlap like interlocked arms and clasped hands. In Craspedia (2024), the artist studies a landscape of her own making. Passing blooms are made permanent, sprouting from the ground, and leaning in unison.

A family stands engulfed by lush foliage in Naima’s Gift (Deon, Kym and Noah) (2023). Kym @chambersvintage , a member of the community Casteel created with and for people of color in Upstate New York, aptly named Upstate Color (UPCO) @upstatecolor , is rendered alongside her partner and young child, embracing within the vibrant garden they built and requested as a site. Its bloom honors the cyclical nature of life, perennially flourishing and impermanent.

In Transit (2023), a caregiver on a NYC subway both leans on and provides support to a child, like stems crisscrossing and carrying the weight of their counterparts. Anonymous and transient, the cropped composition parallels the immediacy of the true-to-scale portrait of a blossoming herb in Holy Basil (2024), composed en plein air. With each intentional brushstroke, Casteel likens the dedication in seeding a garden to the mindful care in cultivating relationships within families and, in turn, to the kinship between artist and sitter.

Jordan Casteel - 6.5K Likes - [Naima’s Gift (Deon, Kym, and Noah), oil on canvas, 94 x 80 inches, 2023]

The sun was out and they had waited several seasons for this moment — when their garden would be in full bloom. This painting would start a body of work reckoning with my own dedication to the notion of seeding — using the garden to process my own journey. “…Its bloom honors the cyclical nature of life, perennially flourishing and impermanent…” I look forward to sharing this body of work with you at Frieze Los Angeles 2024 | Booth A10 @caseykaplangallery Feb 29 – March 3 ❣️

Jordan Casteel - 5.7K Likes - The horror’s and atrocities that can be committed by fellow humans is baffling.

Jordan Casteel - 4.4K Likes - In 1990 my grandmother Margaret Buckner Young finished her 14 years of service as the first woman of color on the Board of the @metmuseum to be present with her daughter (Mama C) and grandchildren in Denver, Colorado.

No one could have ever told this young free spirit that she would one day, follow the families linage back to New York. A place where, like Grams she’d dedicate her life to being in service to art and people. I look forward to being of service by listening, learning and thoughtfully engaging.

February 29 - March 3, 2024, Santa Monica Airport.

Friday Preview, March 1: 11am – 7pm

Saturday, March 2: 11am – 7pm

Jordan Casteel - 3.7K Likes - These incredibly intimate and personal paintings made this summer in my Upstate NY garden are now on view in @caseykaplangallery ‘s physical and online viewing rooms.

There’s something really special about this... As a young girl, I remember @scholastic art magazine always being around.

I later became an educator and in a full circle way have seen the power in sharing a multitude of stories with young minds.

@chambersvintage
