Caption : Repost from @newsone_official • Marilyn Mosby was sentenced Thursday for federal mortgage fraud and perjury convictions that had the former State’s Attorney for Baltimore facing up to 40 years in prison. While federal prosecutors pushed for Mosby to serve at least 20 months in prison, U.S. District Judge Lydia Kay Griggsby instead issued a sentence of home detention for a year, the Baltimore Sun reported. Mosby also had to give up her condo in Florida, a property that was at the center of the mortgage fraud conviction earlier this year. Mosby was sentenced after President Joe Biden resisted calls to pardon her from not just herself but also powerful individuals and groups across the country. Following the sentencing, Mosby appeared emotional and expressed gratitude outside of the federal courthouse in Greenbelt, Maryland. Repost from @becauseofthem • Viola Fletcher, the oldest living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre, turned 110 years old on May 5, 2024. “I’m real proud to be this age,” Fletcher told WHSV3. ⁠ ⁠ The mother of three and grandmother of six celebrated her birthday surrounded by family, friends, and neighbors with plenty of food, flowers, and music. There’s certainly a lot to celebrate for this centenarian. Fletcher was seven years old when a racist white mob brutally attacked and destroyed the homes, businesses, and property of Black residents in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa. ⁠ ⁠ The resulting devastation and poverty are still impacting the Black community in Tulsa generations later. There’s certainly a lot to celebrate for this centenarian. Fletcher was seven years old when a racist white mob brutally attacked and destroyed the homes, businesses, and property of Black residents in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa. ⁠ ⁠ The resulting devastation and poverty are still impacting the Black community in Tulsa generations later. Almost half of registered voters polled in seven swing states, 48 percent, said they would trust Harris a lot or somewhat to assume the responsibilities of the presidency if President Joe Biden could no longer do so. Eleven percent of voters said they wouldn’t trust Harris very much while 38 percent said they wouldn’t trust Harris at all. It marks the highest level of confidence in Harris’ ability to serve as president since Morning Consult and Bloomberg began polling voters in the seven battlegrounds of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in October. The latest survey, conducted from May 7-13, surveyed nearly 5,000 registered voters in those states. Biden’s age has consistently registered as a concern for voters. If re-elected, Biden, 81, would be 87 at the end of his second term in 2029. Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s Republican opponent for president, turns 78 in June. In the poll, 61 percent of voters said the vice presidential candidate is more important to them in 2024 than in previous presidential elections because of the candidates’ respective ages. Harris is 59. Both Biden and Harris continue to receive relatively low favorability ratings among swing state voters, with 40 percent of swing state voters saying they hold a very or somewhat favorable view of Harris and 52 percent stating they held a somewhat or very unfavorable view of her. Trump narrowly leads Biden by four points, 48 to 44 percent, among battleground state voters in a head-to-head matchup. He also equates the recognition and support of a Palestinian state as “support for Muslim terrorism” which warrants consequences that we have used against so-called “Muslim terrorism” in the past… actions that have included torture, rendition, sexual abuse, extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detention. Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian hatred and bigotry are so normalized among American politicians that they don’t even get noticed or make news. Sure no one has ever heard of this representative but the fact that he harbors such hate and bigotry and openly flaunts it shows you the impunity that him and others like him operate with. These are people who make laws that affect tens of millions of constituents.

Repost from @nbcblk • Terry Williams, the Black dog walker whose home was burned, told NBC News that the fire that has left him and his parents homeless came after 14 years of racist attacks. “This has been going on since I started my business,” Williams said. “I have been called the N-word and other racist terms ever since I’ve walked my dogs or clients’ dogs in the park. At a certain point, it gets to be too much. That’s where we are now.” The San Francisco Police Department has not identified a suspect in the fire. Previously, the department said it was investigating the sending of packages that contained racist threats against Williams to his home as hate crimes but has not identified a suspect in that case either, or whether they are related. Since the fire, Williams said he has received dozens of letters and notes that are plastered on the boarded-up garage doors of his torched home. The notes tell him to not move and keep his head up. A community supporter, Katrina Queirolo, also launched the “Support Terry’s Family Rebuild After Fire” campaign on GoFundMe to help the Williams family. On the night before the attack, bombings intensified in the area around the parish compound, injuring three people inside the church. And on the day of the sniper killing the two women, a tank fired a rocket which struck the Convent of the Missionaries of Charity, destroying the building’s generator and setting off a massive blaze. At the time, the Pope labelled Israel’s actions in Gaza as terrorism. Over 600 people, both Christian and Muslim, continue to shelter in this church to this day.

The flag hoist touched off a spicy @reddit conversation (filled with disgust for whoever did it) and now it seems the flag touting the man who called military veterans “losers and suckers” will come down. Go figure… From the local NBC affiliate: Delmar, NY (WRGB) — A new flag flown at the Delmar Post Office Monday morning. A third flag was added to the flag pole stationed outside government building: the American flag, followed by a POW flag, and finally a 2024 Donald Trump for President flag. A representative for the Postal Service says that the flag was not placed there by post office employees and “will be removed as soon as possible.” Police say they have reached out to the Office of the Postal Inspector, pending investigation.

Go figure… From the local NBC affiliate: Delmar, NY (WRGB) — A new flag flown at the Delmar Post Office Monday morning. A third flag was added to the flag pole stationed outside government building: the American flag, followed by a POW flag, and finally a 2024 Donald Trump for President flag. A representative for the Postal Service says that the flag was not placed there by post office employees and “will be removed as soon as possible.” Police say they have reached out to the Office of the Postal Inspector, pending investigation.
