Caption : Our plan B was a great one. Today with @jonalbon we planned to go to Store Trolltind but the wind the last day had converted all pockets into bigger layers so we easily decided to turn around and go to ski in the sunny side of the valley. Conditions there were much more stable and we had fun on the classics of Isfjorden. Here the east ridge of Kyrketaket, one of the most aesthetic ones in Romsdal with loooots of snow! 🎥 @gopro And about risk: www.mtnath.com/rLikes : 147039

Caption : Norway’s state-owned oil company @Equinor wants to develop Rosebank, the biggest undeveloped field in the UK. It would produce more CO2 than the world’s 28 lowest income countries do in a year. It would fuel the climate crisis & threaten endangered marine species. The UN and the International Energy Agency have warned that we can have NO NEW oil and gas expansion if we want to make our very narrow window to limit warming to 1.5C – the safest level still possible. The Norwegian and UK government are ignoring climate science and their own climate targets when sanctioning new fossil fuel projects like Rosebank. A decision on Rosebank could come any day. Now is the time to raise our voices against climate destruction and demand and end to new fossil fuel projects. Rich countries like Norway and the UK need to take responsibility for their contribution to the climate crisis, not continue to profit from climate-wrecking oil and gas. Governments need to urgently be investing in real solutions to the energy & climate crisis like cheaper renewable energy. Thousands of people across the UK, Norway and globally are fighting to #StopRosebank and Equinor’s dirty fossil fuel projects. To win, we need everyone. Caption : I’ve always been used to taking notes about everything I do: time, type of training, training location, sensations. Not all the information is on digital platforms. As someone interested in data, I prefer to follow the ‘old’ methods: the same spreadsheet since I started to train 20 years ago. As the year comes to an end, I share with you some of this year’s statistics: highs and lows, good challenges, and many hours spent in the mountains, either alone or in the company of family and friends. Looking back, I’m happy with how 2023 went. 📷 @_avisuals / @matti_bernitzLikes : 69521

Caption : My journey through the Pyrenees was like summitting Mt. Kilimanjaro every day for 8 days. My friends at @corosglobal did a deep dive into my training and activity data, which documents my increase in fitness after my injury, and the stress I took on during my 8-day journey. On average, I covered 47.2km a day with 19 hours of activity and 4.3 hours of rest. In total, my COROS Training Load reached 6,536. That’s like running a marathon every day with nearly 6,000m of elevation gain, in terms of the stress on my body. Tap the link in my bio to read the full COROS analysis. #trainwithCOROSLikes : 64530

Caption : From its inception, UTMB has been a trailblazing and unifying force in the trail running community. Michel, Catherine and their team actively engaged with the community, as key advocates for the sport and its values. Being instrumental in founding ITRA and playing a pivotal role in popularizing and structuring trail running globally. However, since they launched UTMB World Series in partnership with Ironman, there has been an increasing concern for many perceiving that the sport’s essence and its community was being overlooked. With the aim of starting productive discussions as well as showing our discontent as athletes, we initiated discussions to realign with community expectations. This involved mobilizing athletes to express concerns, not to boycott but to raise awareness. Trail running evolution, partly thanks to UTMB, has brought positives like competitive races, prize money, antidoping, media coverage and sponsorships. These developments are, in many ways, beneficial to the sport. Nonetheless, growth should be thoughtful. Lately, the aforementioned progress seems to have been marred by missteps. This has included controversial race acquisitions, neglecting or unhearing the community in what we believe are important subjects such as environmental impacts or accessibility. The UTMB board stated that some were due to misinformation and misunderstandings. After a January 23 meeting with the UTMB Board, I’m hopeful for stronger, open communication between the community, including elite athletes represented by PTRA, and UTMB focusing on the sport development with its values at the center. As an athlete in a privileged position, staying silent would be easier, but given the community’s concerns, speaking out felt necessary. By mobilizing elite trail runners, together with @zachmiller38, we aimed to foster collaboration between race boards and runners, finding common ground for the sport betterment. This isn’t about creating discord but about fostering constructive dialogue to preserve our sport’s integrity and values. By speaking up and engaging in these conversations, we strive to collaboratively grow the sport while honoring its heritage and future.Likes : 56679

One of the oldest and most competitive mountain race will start tomorrow at 11h from the valley at Sierre and end up in the mountains of Zinal following a route that requires being a good climber and a good flat runner if you want to perform. I’ll be following in the side of the route and on the 🎤 of the live streaming. Best of luck to all the participants, the runners and the turists. Caption : Well, it seems I’ll be on the bike for some days. Some days before Eiger Ultra trail I started to feel pain in my right hip. I thought it was a muscle problem or tendinitis that would go away with some easy days but after a check we found out it’s a bone edema. Probably I was back to fast to do very big running weeks after the Himalaya expedition, where we come always a bit more weak, specially this year with the virus and the avalanche, and I didn’t work on strength to take care of my weak left leg.I was feeling good linking big running weeks and feeling great on my training but well, it’s also part of pushing the limits… It feels it’s a bad timing to get this injury so close to the races but managing injuries and recovery is part of an athlete’s life. I’ll focus on the recovery now and see when I can run again!Likes : 54576

Caption : – I wanted to share with you some reflections on running & climate change: As I lace up my running shoes and step out into the crisp morning air, I am reminded of the paradox that has come to define my life: running fast to slow down. In this fast-paced world, where consumerism reigns and social media likes dictate self-worth, I found solace in the simple act of running. It’s a journey that has taught me to seek what truly matters – emotions, progress, and the beauty of long, slow processes. Trying to become a faster runner, skier, or alpinist has taught me to slow down life. In a culture obsessed with shortcuts and instant gratification, training teaches me the value of patience and perseverance. There are no quick fixes here – just the long, steady road to improvement. It’s a lesson that resonates deeply with me, reminding me to appreciate the journey itself, with all its ups and downs, rather than fixating on fleeting moments of success. And as the world urges me/us to want more, to buy more, to be more, sport reminds me that what’s important are the simple things. It is not about the fanciness of the last thing available but about the repetition of the basics over years and decades. This minimalist approach has permeated other aspects of my life, leading me to question what I truly need. I believe that slowing down is also mostly important for future generations, in a planet without infinite resources, we need to slow to a pace that isn’t extinguishing them, and right now, we are running at a sprint pace in a race that is the longest ultra we can imagine, believing that our body will be able to keep up with it. That’s probably the hardest in today’s overloaded world—to find a journey of simplicity where happiness, as easy as it sounds and as complicated as it is, is at its center. 📷 @_avisuals (photo 2,3)Likes : 52301

Personally, I’m very curious to understand the limits of the human body. And based on the sensations and the data I receive, I get to know and understand where I need to work harder. Visit former university professors. And training at the @cneafontromeu. We have done some sessions at ~6000m to stimulate the hypoxic response. What does this allow? With low mechanical impact, you can work on some physiological aspects considering your threshold or your vo2max capacity. The trail running training season is officially open.Likes : 43769

Caption : Snow is such an amazing element ( or more correctly the best state of water ) and even if we spend lots amounts of time on it, skiing, running, climbing, playing, etc. we don’t really know much about it. Some years ago I got to know Eric Maréchal and the work he and his team are doing studying the organisms living inside the snow, specially the algae. Yes, if you have seen in the spring this red marks in the snow, those are algae. (Pictures 2 and 3) This year Eric gave me some tubes for samples collection. Yet in Himalaya I didn’t find any algae in altitude, but today in my training from home I could take some samples from Norwegian snow for the Alpalga project.Likes : 42712

Caption : You may remember the video we posted pulling the sled on a family adventure. That is what we wanted to talk about to you today: the balance between family life & life as an elite athlete. During the week, now that both girls are going to kindergarten, we have about 6 hours to train and work. Emelie’s training, time in the garden with Moonvalley, and Kilian’s training with NNormal and research. If we want to do a second session, it is often in the gym while the kids are sleeping. When the kids are home for holidays or sick (yes, that happens often when viruses spread in kindergarten), we often train inside in the gym, or we alternate between morning/afternoon to train and be with them. On the weekends, we prioritize being together. We often do a short session in the gym early in the morning and then spend the day doing activities with the kids. Probably what has changed the most is that now we spend most of our time at home. Before, we organized our lives around races, with lots of traveling. Now, it’s the opposite; we plan for a calendar with few races or projects so we spend most of the year at home. Since both our parents live far away, we see if we can meet them around a race so we can also run the same race together. In the end, it’s about being organized and finding a balance between all the things we want and need to do, sometimes compromising but prioritizing family time and training. Adding to this, because not all training is about performance, pace, or speed, come our adventures as a family. And these are the best. We take the opportunity to explore Norway’s nature together. The decision to move to Norway was based on what we thought was best for us as parents and as athletes: living more peacefully, slowly, close to nature, where we know we have everything we seek and need for our well-being. We don’t want this text to make it seem like everything is perfect because it’s not. There are unforeseen situations. There are days when it’s easier to stick to the plan than others. In the end, it’s about adapting to each situation and not stressing about it but making the best of it. 📷 1 Laura Moliner | 2, 4 Julien Raison | 3 Matti BernitzLikes : 40313

Caption : It’s been a great week for alpine and ice climbing. After a very rainy October the sun came with the cold temperatures and ice has been forming well in Romsdal. I’m still tired from the walk in the Pyrenees, so training has been basically moving, recovering the sleep hours, the hans skin and the stiffness in joints and fascia’s. Climbing in the mountains is great for that. Moving at low intensity, while working on technical and mental / resources skills.Likes : 40266

Caption : Back from Khumbu, Nepal! This expedition was a failure. Or? I didn’t reach the summit I was aiming for. But everything else. I’m a big believer in the how is way bigger and more important than the what, and in that sense the climb was just perfect. Like a big puzzle with all the pieces but one, the summit one. In 1963 the late Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoled made a first ascent of this beautiful route. It was a pleasure to follow their footsteps for a little. My climb started climbing a steep couloir to reach the west shoulder, the conditions there were horrible, blue ice underneath with a top layer of deep snow, 2 steps up and one down for 1000m! When I reached the ridge it was very windy so I stayed under a cornice for 3h to calm down while enjoying watching the queues of climbers from both nepali and tibetan normal routes making their progression. After the wind calmed I continued the ridge and traversed on mixed terrain towards the feet of the Hornbein couloir. I felt great and conditions were perfect. After a few hundred meters on the couloir a wind pocket (I suppose recently created from the morning winds) broke and I got carried down in the avalanche for about 50m. I doubted whether to continue or to turn around and decided the latter. The downhill was interesting, with heavy snowfall that made me use the @corosglobal “back to start” feature following my way up, since visibility was 2-3m and my tracks were under deep snow. Well, a great day in the mountains, where everything was beyond perfect except I didn’t reach the summit. Visit NNormal’s link in bio for more details. 📸 @julien_rai @bertranddelapierreLikes : 40085

In the winter, especially given the Norwegian weather, my training is split into two distinct sessions: morning skiing and afternoon indoor running. Balancing family commitments, I strive to fit these sessions into the evenings or over the weekends. In terms of training, what is your focus right now?Likes : 39764

Yesterday I went up to above Camp 2, at 6600m and then ran back to Namche. For the small story, my duffel bag hadn’t arrived so yesterday’s trip was without food, a good hypoxia fatOx syimuli 😅 For all the trip I used the same shoes, I putted a carbon insole in my Tomir’s boots to have the crampons, and removed it for the run back. One of the things it annoys me the most on expeditions is that often we need to bring a lot of gear, and trying to have more versatile gear, to have less and use more.Likes : 38862

In the next 70 years, two-thirds of glaciers on the region’s mountains will disappear if we do not take urgent action to #SaveOurSnow Breaching the 1.5 degrees threshold enshrined in the Paris Agreement will unleash catastrophe across the Hindu Kush Himalayas: jeopardising the lives and livelihoods of 240 million people in the mountains and 2 billion more people downstream. We should ask our leaders to take action, and individually to use the tools we have for it. And I acknowledge I’m a part of the problem. The footprint of my last travel and expedition in this mountain was not small: 2T/CO2e. And even if I try to do changes on my lifestyle, my relation to sport (travels to events, gear development, etc) and advocacy, I have a long way to go, so better to not listen to me but the ones who really know like the scientists at @_icimod 📸 @julien_rai , @_icimodLikes : 35005

Caption : The recovery after Himalaya’s expedition wasn’t straight forward. The broken ribs and a hip injury made my training a bit more low intensity than I would liked, but finally it seems that all those small injuries are gone. Happy today to be racing at the local skyrace @isfjordenskyrace a bit faster than last year, it seems that different training approaches to running fast can get to a similar result 😜 And now time to follow all the friends running at @wser and @marathondumontblanc 💪💪💪 @nnormal_official @maurten_official @corosglobal 📸 @matti_bernitzLikes : 34534

Caption : Exercising at high altitude is very demanding. To understand what are the adaptations and responses of being exposed to high altitudes to better adapt in the future and to know more precisely how our body works has been always one of the main motivations of training and exercising for me. In the recent expedition in Himalaya I could collect some physiological and metabolic data during the different climbs. Now it’s just a bunch of numbers but hopefully in some time we are able to organize and interpret all that and know a bit more. @phymolab 📸 @bertranddelapierreLikes : 33785
