Maria Bello Instagram - On 9/11 2001, I walked up 7th Avenue from the Village to the Upper West Side in a sea of people covered in gray dust. Some bled, some wept, but silently. Everything was strangely silent save for the wails of sirens and trudging of feet. People who did not know one another helped each other up the avenue. A beautiful man in a pink tutu now covered in gray holding steady the arm of a serious looking business man in broken glasses and a tattered suit. Police officers and Fire Fighters running bravely in the other direction towards the chaos. I was in the city with my then 6 month old baby, his father and my parents. When we saw the second plane hit on the television, my mother rushed to get to the scene. They were asking for any nurses or doctors to come downtown and as my mom was a nurse and I was the only one in the group who knew the neighborhood well we ran to the west side highway. We caught a ride on an ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital, a few blocks from the bar I worked at a few years before and right near the fire station of my buddies at Engine 24, Ladder 5 who I bartended with. (I love you guys and your beautiful families if you are reading this) I will never forget their sacrifice. My sweet mother waited for two days for a mass of survivors who never came. She will not forget. And I will not forget walking up that avenue, breasts heavy with milk, trying desperately to get back to my boy, terrified another tragedy would happen at any minute. But what I remember most from that day and the weeks that followed was the deep goodness and humanity of people from all over the world. The folks who lined up on the West Side Highway cheering on the emergency workers and handing out fresh baked cookies. The news showing crowds from the UK to the Ukraine mourning with us and rooting for us. Heck, I even loved Mayor Giuliani and Bush for their steady leadership and compassion in those first weeks. We didn’t care for a minute who was a Republican or Democrat or who believed in what god or what law. There was love everywhere in the face of horrible destruction. Let’s not forget THAT. For a tiny moment - Love won in the world. 🙏❤️🙏❤️📸 @gulnara_nyc
Maria Bello Instagram - So I’ve decided to come back to instagram after a two year (meno)PAUSE. I went through the first half of menopause during Covid and tried everything to keep it at bay. I took bio-identical hormones (and still do), dieted harder and faster but still managed to gain 15 pounds, tried Ozempic for a week but gave up after the constant nausea and vomiting, got rid of the waddle on my neck, tried Botox, fillers and lasers, face creams, cellulite machines, face threads, teeth straightening and more. I did copious amounts of therapy, including micro-dosing psilocybin, left Hollywood and all social media and at the end of it all finally moved to Paris. That was October of 2021. I decided then to really delve into the PAUSE in menopause and to immerse myself in the 7 tasks of mid-life that Carl Jung spoke about. Jung said the mid-life point is marked by disillusionment and depression. He said to cross over successfully to the second half of life, one needed to complete these tasks. (More on that later). Now after finally coming out of my cocoon of self reflection, I want to share my journey over the last two years to accept my newly emerging self. I hope these posts will help anyone crossing over to the “second half of life” and inspire them not to avoid menopause but to embrace it. I believe that America has always been great and will always strive to do better. Our children live what we model for them. We as Americans are global citizens. We adhere to the principles of our constitution. I did not waiver when a president without my moral views won an election. Do me and America the same favor. I will say again - I do not care if you are Democrat or Republican. But respect our democracy. Why is it that every state our current president is fighting against are only states he lost in? Maria Bello Instagram - Task #1 of Jung’s 7 tasks of mid-life - Facing the reality of aging and dying. I’m on a lovely vacation with my family. I feel grounded and free here. AND YET.. my father fell last night in the senior home he is now living in and was sent to the hospital. My mother was, as always, by his side. But she couldn’t sleep with him in the hospital bed because she had to have some tests done this morning at 6am. She has cancer and has been going through treatment for a few months. I’m sure as always she will be fine. She’s a tough cookie. They also sold their house that they lived in for 60 years. AND YET… now in the second half of my life, I see, like ALL of us - our parents and people we care about getting closer to death. It’s inevitable. And I’m still enjoying it here on our vacation. I know I can’t stop them from aging. I know I can’t stop them from dying. In my PAUSE, I learned to accept this fact. It is, and was, bizarrely freeing. Try it. You’re brave enough to go there. Take your ten minutes everyday as you PAUSE and face the reality of this. There is a gift waiting for you as you move through that point called Mid-Life and get to the other side.
Maria Bello Instagram - So in my PAUSE I also reevaluated my fashion. My usual uniform of jeans with a white button down or a black turtle neck are getting a little old. I still have a ribbed black turtleneck that I bought 22 years ago. Of course a little hole happens now and again at this point. (@lorytailer Thank you for always patching it:). So I was inspired by the costume designer of BEEF @hellyhuang (who was also nominated for an Emmy!)when she added color and prints for my character, Jordan. And I liked it shockingly. I liked it so much that i started to incorporate it into my own wardrobe. I liked how powerful and confident I felt in it. I still wear my uniform most days but in the PAUSE I realized I could embrace the change that comes with age and add another layer that I hadn’t even thought about in the first half of my life. I will never be in a half naked dress as many are wearing on the red carpet these days. They look hot as shit but at my age i don’t want to run around with my panties hanging out! 😂. Play with fashion. It’s fun to stretch in the PAUSE

Maria Bello Instagram - This is my friend. No...not Joe. This is Amy Baker. A star among stars. She died yesterday after a long and hard fought battle with #breastcancer Amy took me into her closet the first time I met her. Literally, into her closet. We were at a fancy party in Sundance (which happened to be at her home) and we connected over our kids, and loves and life and shoes. She lit me up. Even in a room full of famous folks, Amy stood out with her steadiness, authenticity and pure joy. She was KIND. And made me feel i was ok and the world would be right. In that closet, we sat cross legged as she showed me her shoes. (I was bummed that I was a size nine and she was a ten, as she offered me every pair). She talked about her kids. And i talked about mine. “It’s hard loving so much “, I shared and she agreed. “And worth it”, she offered. “And what is life but a loving of the truth? So the truth is - just love”. The last time i saw Amy, she was wearing a hilarious and inspiring baseball cap with fake hair on it as her head was completely bald. “We still want to look good, don’t we? “ she asked. And we laughed. I’m working on not forgetting in these challenging times, all of my history and guides who have gone before me. Realizing that some folks who cross our paths create indelible marks on our souls. God Bless all of those who have passed before us who have shown Us the most beautiful US. Merci Amy. ❤️🙏❤️🙏

I hated this now-ish photo during my PAUSE and all of the photos of me with crinkled eyes, smoking lines on my lips and droopy lids. That’s all I saw—the imperfections. I would compare photos Iike these—the old me and the new me, and of course it made me feel horrible about the new me. During my PAUSE I had to dig deep to look at my own judgement and ask, “Who taught me to hate aging? And why?” Every housewife on tv was seemingly getting younger, so why was I looking older and older? And then, flaneusing around Paris one day, towards the end of my PAUSE, I came upon a Gertrude Stein exhibit. She wasn’t young or pretty in a conventional sense, yet she carried herself in the second half of life in a powerful way. Picasso painted her in this phase and so did Warhol among many because they saw what I saw when I looked at her—POWER. I thought about her face with its creases and carves and her smile that read—“I don’t give a damn,” then I looked at my own face in the mirror, I said out loud, “Own it”. Own your history and age and crinkles and power and POSSIBILITY. You’ve earned it. I said this on repeat whenever I wanted to judge my aging. And that helped get me through the PAUSE. Post your 30 years ago and you now. Own it. Tell me what you like about your new self. #midlifemidwife #secondhalfoflife

Maria Bello Instagram - I’ve worked a lot in my 30 years as an actor. Some jobs have been creatively fulfilling and some have not been. Some have paid me and some have not. Some people I worked with were assholes and most pretty great. Some were trustworthy and forthright and some definitely were not. So in my PAUSE I decided in the second half of my life to only work on projects if they had great writing and a great team and I was paid properly. And only with people who I liked and trusted and would have fun with. Lo and behold - BEEF @beef_netflix_official dropped out of the sky and I was nominated with the show for an Emmy and a critics choice award for the very first time. Thanks to the brilliance of the creator Lee Sung Jin, @aliwong @joeyunlee @youngmazino @ashleyparklady Steven Yuen and the whole cast and crew, I was able to stay true to my mission. A mission that evolved in my PAUSE. What do you want your work life to look like in the second half? Maria Bello Instagram - I took the PAUSE with the hope that I could find a more conscious way forward into the second half of my life. It is not lost on me how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to move to Paris as my partner @dominiquecrenn started a restaurant @goldenpoppy. I didn’t have much acting work so I was focusing on writing. But you take yourself with you wherever you go. As beautiful as Paris is, I found myself bereft at my changing mind and body at the beginning of my PAUSE. I felt static and confused and that was only intensified by my changing hormones and night sweats. Some days the only thing that could get me out of my funk was “flaneusing”. A Flaneur in France was historically a man who walked the city. The feminist word for a Flaneur is Flâneuse. I would find a destination, an hour or two from our house, and Flâneuse(or slowly walk) my way there. I would pause at a cafe to have coffee or stop at music being played on a bridge. It worked almost every time. It’s important to get out of ourselves wherever we are. Whether that’s taking time to Flâneuse around our neighborhood, our mall or a city. Due to the scale of destruction from the multiple fires that have ravaged Los Angeles, @globalempowermentmission Bstrong is opening a second west coast branch in LA. This warehouse will be fully functional with racking, proper systems and aid this week. This branch is a long term recovery hub that will be solely focused on executing our multiple proven programs that we will implement in LA. Our HQ in Miami, as well as our North California branch have already deployed over 20 full size semi trucks of vital aid to this hub. This will continue on an ongoing basis till needs are met. Thank you @officialmariabello & @dominiquecrenn for finding us a home in LA. We will be here for the long haul. We are initially committing to 10 M is supplies and Bstrong cash cards. Maria Bello Instagram - During my PAUSE I was travelling and unraveling the first half of my life and coming to terms with where I had put my energy. This time last year I went on a pilgrimage to the country of Benin to meet the real Woman King. I was deep in my PAUSE and felt a calling. I didn’t know why the story of the film The Woman King came through me. It was a long hard road getting that film made and in the end I did not have the capacity to see it through. I spent so much time and energy to get it to the screen but it felt as if it didn’t love me back. I left Hollywood disillusioned. But it was such a big part of the last ten years of my life so how could I come full circle? That’s when I decided to go with a friend to Benin to pay homage to the real woman king. And there she sat so regally, inviting us into her home to tell us the stories of her ancestors - The warriors who had gone before her and the first woman king whose spirit was passed down for generations and now resided in her. And she told me what I didn’t quite believe then - that I was a warrior as well. And that I would rise. I cried as she blessed my son and told me that the ancestors would keep my family safe. I came out of it letting go even more of a chapter of my life and career. I felt hope for the first time in a very long time. I felt the possibility that I could one day be a warrior rising from the ashes again.

I spent so much time and energy to get it to the screen but it felt as if it didn’t love me back. I left Hollywood disillusioned. But it was such a big part of the last ten years of my life so how could I come full circle? That’s when I decided to go with a friend to Benin to pay homage to the real woman king. And there she sat so regally, inviting us into her home to tell us the stories of her ancestors - The warriors who had gone before her and the first woman king whose spirit was passed down for generations and now resided in her. And she told me what I didn’t quite believe then - that I was a warrior as well. And that I would rise. I cried as she blessed my son and told me that the ancestors would keep my family safe. I came out of it letting go even more of a chapter of my life and career. I felt hope for the first time in a very long time. I felt the possibility that I could one day be a warrior rising from the ashes again.

When we saw the second plane hit on the television, my mother rushed to get to the scene. They were asking for any nurses or doctors to come downtown and as my mom was a nurse and I was the only one in the group who knew the neighborhood well we ran to the west side highway. We caught a ride on an ambulance to St Vincent’s Hospital, a few blocks from the bar I worked at a few years before and right near the fire station of my buddies at Engine 24, Ladder 5 who I bartended with. (I love you guys and your beautiful families if you are reading this) I will never forget their sacrifice. My sweet mother waited for two days for a mass of survivors who never came. She will not forget. And I will not forget walking up that avenue, breasts heavy with milk, trying desperately to get back to my boy, terrified another tragedy would happen at any minute. But what I remember most from that day and the weeks that followed was the deep goodness and humanity of people from all over the world. The folks who lined up on the West Side Highway cheering on the emergency workers and handing out fresh baked cookies. The news showing crowds from the UK to the Ukraine mourning with us and rooting for us. Heck, I even loved Mayor Giuliani and Bush for their steady leadership and compassion in those first weeks. We didn’t care for a minute who was a Republican or Democrat or who believed in what god or what law. There was love everywhere in the face of horrible destruction. Let’s not forget THAT. Jung said the mid-life point is marked by disillusionment and depression. He said to cross over successfully to the second half of life, one needed to complete these tasks. (More on that later). Now after finally coming out of my cocoon of self reflection, I want to share my journey over the last two years to accept my newly emerging self. AND YET.. my father fell last night in the senior home he is now living in and was sent to the hospital. My mother was, as always, by his side. But she couldn’t sleep with him in the hospital bed because she had to have some tests done this morning at 6am. She has cancer and has been going through treatment for a few months. I’m sure as always she will be fine. She’s a tough cookie. They also sold their house that they lived in for 60 years. AND YET… now in the second half of my life, I see, like ALL of us - our parents and people we care about getting closer to death. It’s inevitable. And I’m still enjoying it here on our vacation. I know I can’t stop them from aging. I know I can’t stop them from dying. In my PAUSE, I learned to accept this fact. It is, and was, bizarrely freeing. Try it. You’re brave enough to go there. Take your ten minutes everyday as you PAUSE and face the reality of this. There is a gift waiting for you as you move through that point called Mid-Life and get to the other side.

I will never be in a half naked dress as many are wearing on the red carpet these days. They look hot as shit but at my age i don’t want to run around with my panties hanging out! 😂. And i talked about mine. “It’s hard loving so much “, I shared and she agreed. “And worth it”, she offered. “And what is life but a loving of the truth? So the truth is - just love”. The last time i saw Amy, she was wearing a hilarious and inspiring baseball cap with fake hair on it as her head was completely bald. “We still want to look good, don’t we? “ she asked. And we laughed. I’m working on not forgetting in these challenging times, all of my history and guides who have gone before me. It is not lost on me how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to move to Paris as my partner @dominiquecrenn started a restaurant @goldenpoppy. I didn’t have much acting work so I was focusing on writing. But you take yourself with you wherever you go. As beautiful as Paris is, I found myself bereft at my changing mind and body at the beginning of my PAUSE. I felt static and confused and that was only intensified by my changing hormones and night sweats. Some days the only thing that could get me out of my funk was “flaneusing”. A Flaneur in France was historically a man who walked the city. The feminist word for a Flaneur is Flâneuse. I would find a destination, an hour or two from our house, and Flâneuse(or slowly walk) my way there. I would pause at a cafe to have coffee or stop at music being played on a bridge. It worked almost every time. It’s important to get out of ourselves wherever we are. Whether that’s taking time to Flâneuse around our neighborhood, our mall or a city.
