Caption : I want to take a moment to express my gratitude and respect to President Biden. He reached what had to have been an extremely difficult decision, but he did what is best for his party and his country. Clearly in his heart he shares the goal of the many millions of Americans who wish to see Democrats defeat Donald Trump in November. The nomination of a new Democratic candidate must be opened to a genuinely democratic process at an open convention. No one should simply be anointed to the position of nominee; all candidates must be heard and their agendas explored. Our party’s basic first principle is democracy. We cannot save our democracy without practicing it ourselves. I look forward to taking my message to the American people, and convincing Democratic delegates, that I am the best candidate to take us to victory in November. Donald Trump has broken the mold, and we must break it too. He has introduced an age of political theatre that cannot be successfully countered by a status quo politician, however good they might be, for we are living in a different kind of moment. Caption : I called for the President to step down from his renomination bid the day after the Trump-Biden debate. Effective crisis management would have called for all those who are calling for him to step down now, to do so immediately – when I did. They did not do so because they were waiting until they could consider it a politically safe thing to do. That’s how much control the party holds over its elected members. Yet ever day that Democrats have waited, they ceded ground to Trump. And even now when they discuss opening the nomination, their ideas of who should step forward are political leaders who have felt too fearful of the party’s ire to stand up and speak before now. (I do not include Kamala Harris in that group because it’s literally her job to support the President and I respect that.) Do we need a Democrat to beat Donald Trump? Oh YES! But the soul of the Democratic party does not lie with the Democratic Party machine. I am an FEC registered qualified candidate. I am on the ballot. And despite a media blacklisting of my campaign and the most absurd kinds of character assassination, I received half a million votes in the primary. My platform would be considered moderate in any other advanced democracy. I hope my supporters – as well as those who do not necessarily support my agenda yet support the practice of democracy itself, and do not agree with political parties having the right to obstruct or to manipulate it – will join me in insisting that I have the right to be in any open convention contest going forward. I imagine the trauma of people who woke up yesterday thinking it was a normal day, then next thing they knew it was all disappearing in front of their eyes — terrifying, life-threatening, almost incomprehensible. Caption : I’m a major fan girl when it comes to the Princess of Wales. When the news was first announced that William would marry Kate Middleton, I remember thinking. “Oh that’s sweet. I mean, she’ll never have the magic of Diana but she’s a lovely girl.” I was right and I was wrong. Kate Middleton didn’t have the inherent charisma of William’s mother, but she achieved it nonetheless. She earned her magic, as a woman and as a public figure. We watched her go from nice girl to extraordinary woman, not only in terms of her beauty but in terms of her activism as well. We saw her concern for people less fortunate than she, and her repeated projects and support for actual people and what they were living through. From her artistic projects during Covid to her obviously sincere work involving mental health and the needs of early childhood, more than once I found myself thinking. “Wow, she’s kind of amazing.” I know she’s incredibly privileged, of course. But it still takes tremendous energy, intention, and goodwill to so consistently show up the way that woman does, plus raise three wonderful children at the same time! Add to it all the behind-the-scenes royal drama the rest of us can only imagine, and I have found myself among her biggest fans. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 39 years old, and at the time she had three little girls. I have some personal experience with the layers of pain and sorrow that Princess Catherine and her family are now enduring. Her situation is just so deeply sad. I’m not quite sure why Americans feel such a connection to the British royal family, but I know many of us do. On one hand I’m glad that in America we don’t have a royal family, but I see their spiritual significance in some countries where they do. I can only imagine the tears being shed for Catherine in Great Britain today. I’ve shed a few for her myself. May she be blessed and healed. May God’s hand be upon her, giving her comfort and strength at this difficult hour. May the spirit of God be upon her and upon all those who love her. Caption : I cannot for the life of me figure out why CNN and MSNBC are so obsessed with the Trump hush money trial. But it is what it is. I turned on the news for a few minutes today and I heard them discussing the Access Hollywood so-called pussy tape. I have my own little anecdote to pass along. During the 2016 election, I got a phone call from TMZ or whatever it was that published the tape. They told me there was a section of it they had not been airing but in which I was mentioned, and they were wondering if I’d like to have it. Apparently, Trump had said to Billy, “What about Marianne Williamson? Who is she?” Bill replied that I was an author in LA and that I founded this organization called Project Angel Food and that I was an activist or whatever and Trump then just said “Really? Is she hot?” Billy replied, “ Nah, she’s old.” At the time of that tape (2005) I was 53 years old, as in the picture above. When they asked me if I wanted the tape, I said no, that I wanted nothing to do with any of that. But now I wish I’d said yes! A bit of a time capsule if nothing else. Caption : Saturday was the deadline for filing as a Democrat running for the nomination for President. We did everything possible to stand for a blitz primary and an open convention. Yet the way the rules were made there truly was no way, Kamala’s momentum was in full swing, and all we could do now is create noise. I was in the race to create fundamental change, yes – but not as a chaos agent. Things being what they are – including the fact that defeating Donald Trump has always been and continues to be the goal that most matters – it was time to let go. To those of you who supported my campaign- as voters, volunteers and donors -I salute you and I thank you. For years I’ve been intrigued by Gandhi’s message that “politics should be sacred.” And I saw things that convinced me it could be that way: people entering the political conversation not only with their heads but with their hearts, not with anger but with love, willing to look beyond artificial divides, honoring the truths of our history, bringing the fullness of themselves to the process, and harnessing all those things for political purposes. I saw it. I felt it. I know it’s possible. For many reasons, I was not able to achieve that. What matters now to me most is not what we didn’t achieve but what we did achieve; and we achieved a lot. There were moments too numerous for me to count where I know without a shadow of a doubt that we shed light in the darkness of confused minds, inspired hope in the spirit of hopeless citizens, and motivated people to get involved and stay involved until justice shall be done. My daughter was fortunate enough to have godparents – all of whom were then childless themselves – whose maternal and paternal instincts and behavior contributed every bit as much as I did to her becoming the outstanding woman she is today. I’ve known many men and women who never had children but who – as aunts and uncles and godparents and teachers and friends – play profoundly important roles in the lives of children. To say childless people lack an understanding of our responsibility to younger generations is deeply untrue, as well as maliciously hurtful to millions of people who do more than most people have any idea to lift up our children. Caption : On social media, some have suggested I should be more loving towards Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Like, “What happened to the lady who wrote A Return to Love?” I tilt my head, pretty sure we’re supposed to show at least equal compassion to those whose lives are being traumatized by those gentlemen’s actions these days. I admit I feel less urgency to love the perpetrator than I do their victims – particularly federal workers who have served their country well and at the very least do not deserve the insults thrown at them as they’re told to leave, or former recipients of lifesaving food or medicine who now have nowhere else to turn. But I do get the point that we’re called by God to love everyone, and I don’t take it lightly. I’ve been praying for Donald Trump for years, and I’ve gotten to the point where I get it, he’s an innocent child of God and so forth. Several friends have told me “He’s not like that in private, Marianne. He’s lovely at dinner,” which weirdly is supposed to make me feel better. I admit Elon Musk presents more of a challenge for me now, but I’m working on it. I’m reminded of this quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: “God said we have to love our enemies, but He didn’t say we have to like them.” King also said, “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.” I see what Trump and Musk are doing as reckless and abusive – and a sentimental and anemic love an inadequate response to this moment. People frequently question how Jesus could have kicked over the tables of the money-changers, but no Jew or Italian would have a problem with that scene. To some of us, that kind of thing isn’t anger…it’s personality! I’ve noticed that people who speak in sticky sweet syrupy vocal tones are often those who carry the sharpest emotional knives in their pockets, just waiting for you to turn around. Love is emotionally tender, but also fiercely intelligent. The uncomfortable reality is that to a hungry person, putting food on the table does seem more important than saving democracy. If anything, history shows that desperate people are more, not less attracted to a political strongman. And that’s what makes this moment so dangerous. The Party is bleeding voters now – from Black voters, to Asian voters, to young voters, to Latino voters. Caption : I grew up in a home where all the aunts and uncles and cousins had breakfast together on Sunday morning. This would be a common conversation: One of my uncles would say, “Don’t listen to your father, kids. You’ll never make a dime!” Then my father would say, “Don’t listen to your uncle, kids. He won’t survive the revolution!” Then my mother would walk in and say, “So who wants white fish and who wants roast beef?” The climax of the conversation? “Okay, let’s eat!” In other words, there was always political cross-talk, political arguing, defense of or scorn directed at this political figure or another. But there was a firewall between all of that, and any kind of personal animosity. The hatred we’re directing at other people for no other reason than that they have the audacity to disagree with us, is so toxic at this point that it’s destroying the fabric of our society. No one owes it to us to agree with us! And no one has a monopoly on truth! Judgement should be saved for unjust systems, not individuals. At this point, it’s becoming emotionally unsafe to even express an opinion anymore. Politics and political sharing should not be a psychological blood sport. Is that the world we want to bequeath to our children? This is a time for processing, for listening, for thinking, and yes, for many of us, for praying. This country is in trouble, everybody knows that, and the people who disagree with us aren’t automatically our enemies. The next 70whatever days are going to be so awful if we don’t get control of ourselves. And after that, oh my God. We decry the divisiveness, yet we divide ourselves constantly. I think the most important thing we can do today is forgive each other, have some mercy on each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt. Caption : As of last night, President Biden has secured all the delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination for the Presidency. I congratulate him on his win. I, like many others, am deeply concerned about the prospect of Donald Trump becoming President again and I do believe he poses an existential threat to our democracy. I have said throughout the campaign that I would never do anything that I feel would help Donald Trump regain the White House. A stand against fascism is now our most urgent concern. But I agree with Franklin Roosevelt when he said we would not have to worry about a fascist takeover in this country as long as democracy delivered on its promises. And our democracy does not now deliver on its promises to the majority of Americans. I have been traveling the country for the past year, and I have a very strong sense of an energy that is about to blow. People are desperate, and they are not feeling that Washington hears their cries for help. If the President does not offer a more inspiring agenda to the electorate than he is currently offering, then I fear defeat in November. For that reason, I do not intend to be quiet now. Half the states have not yet weighed in with their primary votes, and for those where we are on the ballot I plan to travel and speak my truth. The truth is, the Democratic Party is losing voters at a time when we most need them. Black voters, Asian voters, Muslim voters, and young voters are among those headed to the door in way too many cases. I continue to feel that my agenda is the one that would inspire them. I have said repeatedly that I do not believe the greatest electoral risk to the Democrats in 2024 is people voting for Trump, but rather people staying home and not voting, or voting for a third party or independent candidate. What I will be doing over the next few weeks is what I think of as a kind of shadow campaign, continuing to share with voters the analysis and policies that I believe would make the difference between winning and losing in 2024. I’ll continue to honor the trust that they signify. They are a cry for fundamental change in America. Caption : “All men are created equal” is our national creed, and it should apply not only to Americans. In terms of the relationship between Palestinians and Israelis, throughout my campaign I’ve argued that America’s highest alliance should be with humanity itself. We should be equally and robustly committed to the safety, security and sovereignty of both peoples. The greatest way we can support peace between Israel and Palestine is to do our best to love them both. Regarding the war in Gaza, as President I would not have given Netanyahu the leeway he has been given. I would have told him that while the U.S. fully supports Israel’s defeat of Hamas, not one dollar or weapon would be given by us until 1) I saw their strategy for how they planned to do it; 2) their plan for how to protect civilians; and 3) I knew their intention for what would happen the day the war ended. Unequivocal financial and weaponry support that has been given to Netanyahu since October 7 has been a very poor strategy on the part of the President, and leaves us with much less leverage in trying to influence Netanyahu’s behavior than we might otherwise have had. The protests on college campuses going on now reflect for the most part a sincere and well-intentioned desire for a ceasefire in Gaza. But seeping into the pro-Palestinian movement of those appropriately decrying injustices toward an oppressed people is also a dangerous antisemitism – the opposite of cries for justice. All students should feel safe on campus. Tonight is the Jewish Passover Seder and for many American Jews, there’s anxiety surrounding this night the likes of which we’ve never experienced. Many of us have long been advocates for the rights of Palestinians, but what is occurring now could distort the pursuit of justice. Support for Palestinian rights should not translate into support for Hamas. Nor should support for Palestinians translate into hatred toward the Jewish people, or a delegitimizing of the right of the state of Israel to exist. The moral as well as political basis for a 2-state solution is that both Jews and Palestinians have the right to a sovereign state. Both peoples deserve peace, and both deserve love.Likes : 5696

Caption : In ACIM it says you can have a grievance or a miracle, but you cannot have both. Holding a grievance is a way of keeping your personal universe frozen. Continuing to attack someone else in your mind, you are attacking yourself. Why? Because there is only one of us here. So when you think of people towards whom you hold grievances, your emotional salvation lies in letting it go. There is something profound about accepting things – and people – exactly as they are. It isn’t condoning anything, it’s simply allowing a power higher than yourself heal the situation. Once we get to this place, then even if we need to hold a person or system accountable we do it in a different way. We’re coming from a different place within ourselves. Everything we do is infused with the energy with which we do it. If we are judging people for the way they acted, we are wrong even if we are right. Only when we give up the judgment, can we be a conduit for a miraculous shift in the situation. The universe is intentional, always bending in the direction of the next best thing, the miracle, the healing, the repairing of the wound. But by holding grievances, we stop the action and stay stuck in the place where our victimization supersedes the possibility of a new beginning. Whoever it is towards whom you hold any level of grievance right now, consider that it’s fine the way they are. At the deepest level, your pain doesn’t come from them being the way they are but from you wanting them to be different. By judging them, you are judging yourself. Caption : Certain principles should guide us now. 1) Do not go to sleep. Do not allow yourself to minimize the problem or to nullify your seriousness. Just make sure it’s a quiet, centered, fiercely loving intention. Think Mother Nature when she’s simply had it. She’s not mad. She just won’t take it anymore. This isn’t about hating anyone. It’s about loving freedom so much, and you’re absolutely adamant we will pass it on to future generations. You will not allow your country to bow to authoritarianism. 2) Do not cave. Do not allow yourself to do one single thing out of fear of unpopularity or retribution, or out of obedience in advance. 3) Remember: Nature is organizing the resistance. The most important thing is to make yourself receptive and available. Do not allow yourself to emotionally spiral down, and if you feel it starting to happen, reach out to a friend for help. Grief is appropriate, but you can’t let it run you. The point is to focus on action. It could be reading a book or an article and continuing to educate yourself on what’s happening. It could be attending a local protest. It could be communicating with your own legislators, particularly if they are Republican. Attend any town halls that are related. What’s important is not the specific action right now so much as the accumulation of energy. People are waking up all over the country, but we have to add to the momentum every day in every way. Everything we do is infused with the consciousness with which we do it. Martin Luther King Jr. said we need “quantitative changes in our circumstances and qualitative shifts in our souls.” Everything that happens in the world is a reflection of who we are…and how we think. What am I going to do? What am I going to achieve? How can I create the future I want? All are questions that dominate the inner dialogue of the modern American mind. But a much better life emerges from a different set of questions. How am I showing up for life right now? Who do I need to forgive right now? How can I be more open-hearted right now? Those are the thoughts that make of the present a portal to the most powerful future. As the universe is literally the Thought of Love (or Mind of God), it is set up to deliver us to the highest best things for ourselves and for all the world. It’s our non-loving thoughts that block the way. That is why enlightenment is not a learning, but an unlearning – unlearning the thoughts of fear (or lovelessness) that form barriers to Love. Caption : I feel the energy starting to build. More and more Americans, Republicans as well as Democrats, can see the outlines of a coup. And I don’t think they like it. What’s at stake at this point is nothing less than the U.S. Constitution and the system of government its framers laid out for us. Never perfect, never fully actualized, the Constitution has nonetheless held this country together since it was ratified in 1788. This document of unmistakable genius, mainly the handiwork of 36-year-old James Madison, articulates the legal principles on which, despite some very rough chapters in our history, Americans have agreed to agree. Yet now a bunch of billionaire techno bros have decided they have a better idea. They feel that modern nation states, Constitutions, things like that are just quaint relics of the past and we’d best be rid of them. It would be preposterous if it weren’t so scary, but scary it is… because they’re working this, and they’re working quickly. Elon spent $277M to purchase the right to an Oval Office press conference all his own, plus access to government computers so he can play with the $7 Trillion payment system at the U.S. Treasury like it’s his new toy. He bought it, after all. Why shouldn’t he? Journalist Gil Duran on the Majority Report gave some interesting insight into these techno authoritarians. The more you read about this, the more it twists your head. Of this be very clear: they are not kidding. Current happenings are more than the bullying tactics of immature boys. They are dangerous plans executed by uber wealthy, powerful sociopaths who fail utterly to appreciate the deeper point of a free society. One thing they’re right about is that one or two people calling all the shots is a more “efficient” way of running things – for the very reason that it leaves everyone but them out of the decision-making! Caption : Today is a bit of a significant day for me; I won’t be using my political megaphone in the same way going forward. Tomorrow is the eclipse and I feel “ending and beginning” vibrations within myself. I will be speaking in Washington DC on Monday night, going to New Mexico and Oregon next week, then coming back to the East Coast to speak in Baltimore right after that. They will give me the opportunity to speak my truth in places where I’m still on the ballot, which is important. For those of you in those areas I hope I will see you there, and that you will vote for me. Martin Luther King Jr. said “the desegregation of the American South is the political externalization of the goal of the civil rights movement, but the ultimate goal is the establishment of the beloved community.” He said “we need external changes in our circumstances and internal shifts in our souls.” The transformational journey that will create a sustainable, even survivable future for the human race entails internal as well as external change. Just as in medicine we realize an integrative approach is necessary to heal the body, we need an integrative approach to healing society as well. The politician of the future is like today’s functional medicine doctor. We need to deal with root causes as well as symptoms, and often those root causes have as much to do with thought and emotion as with anything material. The most powerful leader of the future is a practitioner of change on more levels than one. Going back-and-forth between issues of spiritual change and political change is natural to the way I think. I have bristled when people within the political space have said I should “stay in my lane.” We are multidimensional people and therefore multidimensional citizens. There isn’t supposed to BE a “political lane” in America that leaves out the rest of us; the fact that there has become one has damaged this country greatly. It has been ratified now by 38 states and all we need is one phone call to make it officially an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Finding that space within ourselves – whether through prayer, mindfulness, meditation or however – we claim a magnetic power that attracts harmony and good. In human affairs, the Light within us is that magnet. The Light within us has many names, but in essence it is Love. Compassion. Forgiveness. Peace. Love is so needed now. We are starving for it. It’s painful living in such a tumultuous moment, particularly in the absence of strong institutional voices expressing moral reasoning. The scariest thing about this time is not just what’s happening, but a lack of leadership pointing to a better world ahead. Yet even that brings a teaching, when we think about it. In AA it says that every problem comes bearing its own solution. The solution is that we ourselves are the voices needed to articulate a higher vision for the world. Finding Love within ourselves we can express it to the world. The Light within us will cast out all darkness. But the Light within us is the light of compassion; the miracle does not emerge from hate. The voices of hate that fill the world today are the voices we must eschew. Caption : Tomorrow I go to New Mexico, then Oregon. I will end the trip with talks in Baltimore and Puerto Rico and then finit! Politically, I will have said my piece. I’ll have done all that I can do this political season to suggest to the American people that there might be a better way. My last campaign event will be April 22nd, and the book will be published on May 7. I do wish, as I’m sure they do as well, that we had a bit more time to transition from my political to my spiritual offerings. But such schedules work the way they work, so we have seventeen days to switch from one part of the brain to the other… Maybe it’s my Gemini ascendant that’s responsible for the way I go back and forth between two such different sets of mental operating systems. In my mind they’re not contradictory, however. As Martin Luther King said, “The desegregation of the American South is the political externalization of the goal of the civil rights movement, but the ultimate goal is the establishment of the beloved community.” He was a movement leader and also a Baptist preacher, saying it was “time to inject a new dimension of love into human civilization.” He, like Mahatma Gandhi before him, urged inner as well as outer change. By both realms of life I am intrigued, and to both I’m equally devoted. We need horizontal change that transforms our politics and vertical change that transforms our souls. The universe is recalibrating itself in all of us, giving rise to new portals of possibility. If we’re alert, we see changes in both our circumstances and in ourselves. But there is a mystery to change and we should respect it. Sometimes we have to let go of what is no longer ours in order to receive what is calling to us now. There was such a mystical hush during the eclipse on Monday, reminding me of when our electronics are on the fritz and we turn everything off for a few seconds to let the system reset itself. Caption : It was over five years ago when my editor at HarperOne asked me if I’d like to write a book about Jesus. It had always been in the back of my mind that one day I would like to try, but it seemed an effort so daunting I never proposed it to a publisher. I was told that in the book world, what had become obvious was that people wanted to read more about Jesus separate from the context of Christian dogma. As a student and teacher of A Course in Miracles, would I be interested in taking on the project? The publisher began sending me books about Jesus. But the more I read them the more I realized that my understanding of Jesus has little to do with traditional Christianity. I understand him within one context, and that is the material of A Course in Miracles. As a student of the Course, I feel I know him. But that is all I know, and therefore all that I could write. This book is an introduction to the metaphysical Jesus. After a few detours (running for President a couple of times sort of knocks you off your publishing schedule!), the book is finally ready to make its appearance in the world. I’m very happy – and just a tad nervous! – to report that the book will be published on May 7th. For those of you who read my first book, A Return to Love, or are yourselves students of A Course in Miracles, you will recognize THE MYSTIC JESUS: The Mind of Love as a continuation of a conversation I’ve been having with readers for the last thirty years. Caption : This was my mother, Sophie Ann Williamson, and my daughter, now India More Nisbett. The picture was taken in 2001. I read recently that your children and grandchildren have a piece of their brain left in yours or something like that, I’m not sure exactly what it was. Something about brain cells being left behind. (Martha in the comments informs us it’s DNA) It makes all the sense in the world to me, actually. My feelings about my granddaughter are some love beyond “Oh isn’t she cute?” Nature has evolved over millions of years in such a way to ensure the highest possibility for survival of the species, and the fact that we’re as obsessed about our grandchildren as we were about our own children is part of that. Sophie Ann didn’t live long enough to meet India‘s daughter, Elizabeth. But my older sister was named Elizabeth and I know my mother would’ve loved that. In my mind’s eye, I see the same picture as that above but with little Elizabeth sitting on her mother’s lap. Yesterday I walked out of my apartment building and someone had done a grand sidewalk mural in front of it in colored chalk. I don’t know if it was celebrating someone’s mother or grandmother or what, but whoever she is her name is “Sophie.” On this day I remember her. The older you get, the more mysterious it all seems. Caption : America’s middle class has been decimated over the last 50 years, and Democratic as well as Republican Presidents have allowed it to happen. That is the truth. A Marianne Williamson Presidency would turn all that around, and that is the truth as well. The reason my agenda – an Economic Bill of Rights, etc – is a win for the Democrats in 2024 is because it’s a working class agenda. Working people of the U.S. are the backbone of this country, the core of the middle-class. And without a thriving middle-class there can be no thriving democracy. Given the political reality, President Biden will probably have the nomination sewn up in terms of the delegate count very soon. But it doesn’t matter. We have the conversation without which he will not win in 2024. And that is what matters. Hang in there. Make noise. The platform of a Presidential campaign primary season is the way we can harness the conversation, articulate a new vision, and penetrate the field whether we can win the nomination or not. The political-media industrial complex turns elections into mere performance, a circus where they choose their clowns, a machine that eats away at the dream of democracy. It’s very important that we not allow ourselves to get sucked into the machinery, our democratic soul shredded into pieces for their benefit. Stand for democracy despite their shenanigans. Caption : Richard Nixon initiated America’s War on Drugs in 1971. At the time he called it our “public enemy No. 1,” which he knew wasn’t true. We’ve spent a trillion dollars on it since that time, and clearly it hasn’t solved a problem but rather exacerbated it greatly. Gabor Mate has remarked “It isn’t a war on drugs, but a war on drug addicts.” In fact, it’s one of the main drivers of the prison-industrial complex. When I was in college there were 300,000 people incarcerated in the U.S.; today, there are over 2.3 million. And almost half of all federal prisoners are non-violent drug offenders. This too is a racial issue. Blacks and whites in America use drugs at roughly the same rate, yet you never hear about police raiding white neighborhoods looking for drugs. Since Black people get on average 20% longer sentences for the same crime when committed by whites, the Drug War has contributed greatly to systemic racial injustice within the criminal justice system. In short, we need to end America’s War on Drugs. For the $100B we spend on it each year, instead we could have a world class network of drug recovery options. As President I wouldn’t want a Drug Czar; I’d want a Recovery Czar. Ending the War on Drugs will also help undercut the power of the drug cartels by taking away their black market. And it would give us more bandwidth and resources with which to go after the drug we do need to stop: fentanyl. Caption : What a delight to receive a call from the great jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan offering to play at my New Mexico events this week. Last night I spoke in Santa Fe and tonight I will be in Albuquerque. Stanley’s gorgeous music took us to such deep place with ourselves. Later he told me that he feels he is doing with music what I’m doing with politics. If I’m expressing a fraction of the beauty that he is, then I’m grateful. Enthusiastic crowds and standing ovations are much appreciated and also bittersweet at this point, as you can imagine. I’m clear that continuing to campaign has been the right decision, as we must have the deeper conversations despite the shenanigans of the political media industrial complex. People can still vote for our agenda in every state left where I’m still on the ballot: New Mexico, Oregon, Wyoming, Idaho, Guam, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Maryland, and DC. While those votes won’t win the nomination, they continue to impact the ethers and shine light on the fact that millions of people in America still wish to forge a better way. I lived in New Mexico 50 years ago for about a year and a half, and it holds a special place in my heart. A lot has changed in 50 years, but the energy has not. There is an enchantment here and I’m feeling it now the way I felt it then. One day during that time, I was traveling with a friend and up in the sky we saw something incredible: a cloud formation of an undeniable, humongous spread eagle flying across the entire sky. No other clouds. If only we had had a camera … but the picture has stayed with me all these years. It was the most extraordinary thing. It reminds me to believe in what’s possible. At a time of such sadness, with so many hearts unnecessarily torn, let’s hold on to the sounds of a beautiful guitar, images of clouds that seem to hold messages, and our prayers for a better world.Likes : 2376

Caption : I came across this picture of a fire dancer who I saw at a restaurant in Atlanta. I was with wonderful friends and volunteers at a modern Latin restaurant and she came to entertain our table. It seems like a poetic expression of the work that has gone on in our campaign over the last year. I love the image of casting light in the midst of darkness, dancing dangerously and creating beautiful patterns that transform the air around the woman as she moves. I never really knew misogyny before this campaign. I knew it existed, of course, but it had never blocked my way. I had never seen it up close, felt its viciousness or experienced the full breath of its effort to annihilate who a woman is. I hadn’t realized it’s both a conscious and an unconscious phenomenon, diminishing all of us as it throws any woman against the rocks if she dares to refuse to feed the monster. It will take me a long time to understand it all, or to find what medicine for others I might be able to create from having gone through the storm that I have been through. I do know this: the biggest goal of woman-hate in modern society is to make a woman lose faith in herself, to believe there’s something ugly about who she is, to lose her self-confidence, and most importantly, make her stop fire dancing. Caption : Nothing is more core to American democracy than freedom. The freedom to do, to be, to say, to dream, to create, to work, to play, to speak privately, to speak publicly, to basically do anything we darn well please as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. That is the richness and the glory of this country. People have fought, people have struggled, and people have died so that that ideal could be protected and its franchise expanded. It is beyond comprehension to me that there are those who would now limit that freedom. Who’d unabashedly use the powers of the government not in a way to protect our freedom but to diminish it. Yet that is exactly what is happening, and it’s our generation’s task to protect that freedom from their assault, no differently than other generations have been called to do before us. Perhaps someone should remind the modern GOP of these words spoken by Ronald Reagan: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” I’ve been a professional lecturer for over forty years, invited to speak at churches, universities, hospitals, Presidential libraries, and so forth. Never in a million years did I think that here the United States one of those places would have to get permission from the government before inviting me. Like, what is going on here? Except we know what is going on here. The Carter Center was told that from now on they will have to run all programming by the National Archives before scheduling. The Kennedy Center the same. And there is more. Apparently, Washington wants to run everything now. Yet the Save Act is even scarier, though at a certain point this isn’t a matter of degree. Caption : I was shown this picture today of me officiating a wedding in the 1980’s. 36 years later the couple is still married. We laughed at the idea that I tied a tight knot! We talk a lot about childhood these days, our childhood dramas and figuring out what they mean. But every decade and every phase are dramas leading up to the next one, and they all seem to me as important as childhood. Figuring out the years between 30 and 60 seems as meaningful as figuring out the years before then. Age feels in many ways a time in which you’re trying to understand what just happened! The middle decades of your life – the ups, the downs, the successes, the losses, the pains, the joys, the failures, the sorrows, the loves. What WAS all that?! i’ve been in New Mexico this week; I lived here one year in my early 20s. I’ve experienced here that I often feel walking on the streets of Manhattan. I keep sensing the ghost of myself back then. I see a young woman and I think “I was her once.” I remember my father once saying, “When you’re old, you don’t feel old.” You’re the same person at 70 that you were at 20. Who you are inside doesn’t age. I turn 72 in a few weeks and as with every decade, it takes a year or two to feel like you’re settling into it. The Seventies are some profound shift and I’m only just beginning to discern their meaning. I remember reading a line from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “As I age my beauty steals inward.” I think of the archetype of the old woman on the edge of town, using a stick to stir some concoction inside a large metal pot. I never asked myself before, what would be in that pot? And I think I know: she’s stirring the experiences of her life into an alchemical brew that might be of service to others. That stick is her depth of understanding. Young travelers will come to her house & she’ll give them some brew to help strengthen them on their journey. She lives in a house on the edge of town. She’s often there with other older women right? And she’s usually seen as a witch of some sort. Of course she is, by those who have no understanding of wisdom. She’s an important part of the mosaic of life. And these are actually some of her most magical years yet.Likes : 2237

Caption : In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Politics should be sacred.”He didn’t mean it should be dogmatic or doctrinal, but that it should come from a deeper place in our hearts. It should express our reverence for nature, for each other, and for ourselves. Politics should be the art of collectively creating a more beautiful world. Traveling around the country, I see people everywhere shaking their heads about our current politics and saying sadly, “This ain’t it.” We need an alternative to a system stuck in the mire of what is essentially a controlled system – controlled by money, by media, and by political bosses. It is literally destroying our democracy. Yet we cannot do that through force, or even traditional political organizing. We can only do it through love. I’ll be traveling to New York and Connecticut this week, then later on to Oregon, New Mexico, and perhaps Puerto Rico. I continue to use every opportunity I have to share a message that I know in my heart is the most heartfelt, therefore the most sustainable option for America’s future. The agenda of our campaign is a loving one, from providing all Americans with health care, to its focus on waging peace, to paving the way for people to be educated, to caring for America’s children, and more. While that won’t be taking us to the White House, it is taking the American political conversation to a much higher place. The fact that we have garnered roughly 400,000 votes in the primary season already is a sign that people are listening. Caption : I knew Maya Angelou. Not well, but we were friendly acquaintances. Once in 1998 we had a drink together in Detroit, and she told me a story. On the day of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, he was scheduled to fly from Memphis to New York City. And there was to be a party in New York for him. Maya was there. She told me about the people gathered, about the news breaking of his death, of how they shared their agony and grief. She described to me how she had felt that night. We talked about hope and hopelessness. How I wish I had a recording of her words. Hearing Maya speak to you was somehow more than just someone speaking to you. It was more like a transmission. And as she described the party, it’s as though it came alive in some three-dimensional way. The very sound of her voice held worlds. We’re so lucky to have all the audio and video that we have of Maya’s voice. And Martin’s too, for that matter. We need our past heroes now, to inspire us and nudge us along. I always get melancholy on April 4th, the day MLK died. And on November 22, when JFK died. And on June 6, when Bobby Kennedy Sr. died. With most people, every year after their passing gets easier. But with those men, every year that goes by gets harder – because everything we feared would happen when they died, has happened. I shared that thought with Maya as we sat together that night on the couch at the Ritz Carlton bar in Dearborn. We looked at each other and shared a few seconds of silence. Sitting in silence with Maya was like sitting in silence with God. I remembered that story today, as I read Maya’s quote below. It felt like a message from her when I read it, a bit of a nudge, a bit of a “Buck up.” Even in her silence she shared such power. And even in death she still does. “If you must look back, do so forgivingly. If you will look forward, do so prayerfully. But the wisest course would be to be in the present in the present gratefully.” The last time I saw her, Maya asked me for a prayer. Today she answered mine.Likes : 2124

Caption : I’ve been a grassroots activist for over 35 years. l founded non-profits and funded them, served on their boards, and worked on projects including AIDS activism, racial reconciliation groups, anti-hunger and anti-poverty, established a campaign for a U.S. Dept. of Peace, produced The Sister Giant conferences introducing thousands of women to political activism, and created a Progressive Candidate Summit supporting Congressional candidates. From starting an organization that has fed over 18 million meals to homebound people with AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses, to visiting the slums of Kenya while attending a micro-credit conference on global poverty, my eyes have seen. Through those experiences, plus my work as a non-denominational spiritual leader addressing large groups as well as counseling individuals, I’ve known a lot of good people simply struggling to survive. And at the same time, because I had become successful as an author and was living in L.A., I found myself exposed to some of the wealthiest, most powerful people in the world. I’ve traveled a few times on private planes and yachts. I’ve spent a night at the White House and a weekend at Camp David. I had the privilege of gaining that magic potion called “access.” All of this gave me a unique perspective on America, having spent quality time among both the most advantaged as well as the least advantaged people among us. Over the years, the experiences of my life turned into one long “Aha!” moment. A light was gradually turned on in my mind, literally over a span of decades, as each experience added to my understanding: “Oh, this is how America operates…!” But don’t get me wrong: None of this is about good people versus bad people. No socio-economic group has a monopoly on moral values. Not every rich person is a greedy bastard, and not every struggling person in the workplace is a working-class hero. But we’re living at a time when freedom in all its aspects is taking up mental bandwidth in ways we might not have ever thought possible. We might not have given a concept like Christian Nationalism much attention. But now we ask ourselves things like, how does something like that align with my values as an individual and as an American? This is just one of the ways in which current events are turning us into sober mature adults in ways we might not have been before.
