Would those non-profits that I saw at the end of PBS documentaries ever consider making a narrative film with actors - if it was about a topic that aligned with their mission? I called the one man who would have the answer - and in a turn of events that would change everything - he said yes. That man is Darren Walker of the Ford Foundation. He gave me and ARRAY Alliance’s Executive Director Regina Miller the courage to ask our long-time supporters Laurene Powell Jobs of Emerson Collective and Melinda Gates of Pivotal Ventures. These dynamic women leaders also said yes. Then, more like-minded partners came on board, like Anne Wojcicki, Kimberly Steward, Agnes Gund, Chris and Jada Paul, among many others. You never know when people will say yes. So in the meantime, prepare the soil. Be ready when the time comes for the seeds you’ve planted to blossom. Melinda Gates Instagram - From then to now, I couldn’t love you more, Phoebe 💞 Happy 22nd birthday!
Melinda Gates Instagram - My hero Jimmy Carter was a peacemaker, a public servant, a man of faith, a devoted partner to Rosalynn—and a Guinea worm’s worst nightmare. I knew him best as a global health advocate and deeply admired his dedication to taking on diseases that impact the world’s poorest people, like Guinea worm disease. When President Carter left office, there were more than 3.5 million cases of this painful, debilitating disease around the world each year. This year, thanks in no small part to the work of the Carter Center, that number was down to single digits. He dreamed of outliving the last Guinea worm—and came incredibly close. As he traveled around the world meeting with heads of state, monitoring elections, visiting clinics, and building homes, he took time to connect to the people he met. He believed in removing the barriers that separated a man like him—a former President and Nobel Prize winner—from people living with the realities of poverty and disease. One of my favorite teachings says: “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.” We honor President Carter by remembering that because of him, life is healthier, better, and safer not just for one life, but for millions. Melinda Gates Instagram - Today, we lost Rosalynn Carter, one of my heroes. Through her activism, her advocacy, her leadership of @thecartercenter, and her lifetime of public service, she left our world better for having walked on it. On a visit to a mill during one of her husband’s first campaigns, Rosalynn Carter met an exhausted worker who confided that she still faced a long night of caring for her mentally ill daughter. In that stranger’s story, Rosalynn heard a call to action and devoted her life to it. Mental health was an issue that few public figures were addressing at the time, but Rosalynn refused to let stigma be an excuse for silence. She took up the cause with courage and compassion. Rosalynn was also one of the first to give voice to the important role caregivers play in our society. She helped others understand both the value of their work—and how much it can ask of caregivers themselves. My thoughts are with her family as they mourn the loss of this extraordinary woman.

Melinda Gates Instagram - I’m excited to share that I’m committing $150 million to help dismantle the barriers that hold women back at work.   New research from my team at @pivotal_ventures, which adds to the growing body of evidence on women’s experiences at work, shows that a lack of caregiving support, toxic workplace cultures, bias, harassment, and even threats of violence are among the biggest challenges women are facing at work right now. It’s clear that the modern workplace simply wasn’t built with women in mind, and frankly, women are tired of being pushed into a broken system and asked to overcome arbitrary and unfair roadblocks to succeed. It’s time for that to change.   These funds, which are part of the $1 billion commitment I announced earlier this year, will be focused on three areas: 1) Seeding innovations to build healthy workplaces; 2) Informing public policy changes to modernize the workplace; and 3) Increasing women’s representation and advancement in AI and tech. It’s essential that women—and all workers—have the support they need at work so they can reach their fullest potential.

Melinda Gates Instagram - It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since my sweet granddaughter Leila was born 🥰 Becoming “Nonna” has made me reflect on the wonderful example my own parents set for how to be an engaged and loving grandparent. I hope I can be as great of a grandparent to Leila as my parents are to my kids. So thankful for them both!
Melinda Gates Instagram - I used to be a therapy skeptic.   It’s not that I was against it—I knew plenty of people who swore by therapy, and I didn’t hesitate to suggest it to loved ones. But I thought of it as something for other people. A good friend helped me see it differently.   One day, years ago, when it was obvious I was feeling stretched thin, she pulled me aside and gently asked: Are you talking to a therapist? I wasn’t, but I told her I’d consider it. The first therapist I went to wasn’t a fit, and I started making excuses to postpone or cancel our sessions. But when the issues I was dealing with escalated, and I had a particularly terrifying panic attack, I knew I owed it to myself—and the people around me—to try again.   Thankfully, the second therapist I saw changed everything. (In fact, I still see her almost every week—ten years later!) It took time and a lot of effort and patience on my part, but she helped me reconnect with the inner voice I had lost touch with over the years. Learning to trust that voice not only empowered me to show up more authentically at home and at work, but it helped me navigate some of my hardest moments with clarity and conviction.   Therapy isn’t the same for everyone, and it can take time to see how it works for you. If you’re a therapy skeptic like I used to be, I get it. But I’ve learned that sometimes we owe it to ourselves to try the thing we’re unsure about. I did, and I’ve never been happier to be proven wrong.   I write about the role therapy played in my life in my new book, The Next Day, which you can learn more about at the link in my bio.

We met with young women who are part of @AGEAfrica — a program supported by the Girls Opportunity Alliance — that provides girls with scholarships, mentorship, and afterschool programming. I saw so much of myself in these bright young women, and I was just so moved by their determination and resilience. I knew him best as a global health advocate and deeply admired his dedication to taking on diseases that impact the world’s poorest people, like Guinea worm disease. When President Carter left office, there were more than 3.5 million cases of this painful, debilitating disease around the world each year. This year, thanks in no small part to the work of the Carter Center, that number was down to single digits. He dreamed of outliving the last Guinea worm—and came incredibly close. As he traveled around the world meeting with heads of state, monitoring elections, visiting clinics, and building homes, he took time to connect to the people he met. He believed in removing the barriers that separated a man like him—a former President and Nobel Prize winner—from people living with the realities of poverty and disease. One of my favorite teachings says: “To know that even one life has breathed easier because you lived, this is to have succeeded.” We honor President Carter by remembering that because of him, life is healthier, better, and safer not just for one life, but for millions. Through her activism, her advocacy, her leadership of @thecartercenter, and her lifetime of public service, she left our world better for having walked on it. On a visit to a mill during one of her husband’s first campaigns, Rosalynn Carter met an exhausted worker who confided that she still faced a long night of caring for her mentally ill daughter. In that stranger’s story, Rosalynn heard a call to action and devoted her life to it. Mental health was an issue that few public figures were addressing at the time, but Rosalynn refused to let stigma be an excuse for silence. She took up the cause with courage and compassion. Rosalynn was also one of the first to give voice to the important role caregivers play in our society. It’s clear that the modern workplace simply wasn’t built with women in mind, and frankly, women are tired of being pushed into a broken system and asked to overcome arbitrary and unfair roadblocks to succeed. It’s time for that to change.   These funds, which are part of the $1 billion commitment I announced earlier this year, will be focused on three areas: 1) Seeding innovations to build healthy workplaces; 2) Informing public policy changes to modernize the workplace; and 3) Increasing women’s representation and advancement in AI and tech. It’s essential that women—and all workers—have the support they need at work so they can reach their fullest potential.

Likes : 6786Melinda Gates - 6.7K Likes - I used to be a therapy skeptic.   It’s not that I was against it—I knew plenty of people who swore by therapy, and I didn’t hesitate to suggest it to loved ones. But I thought of it as something for other people. A good friend helped me see it differently.   One day, years ago, when it was obvious I was feeling stretched thin, she pulled me aside and gently asked: Are you talking to a therapist? I wasn’t, but I told her I’d consider it. The first therapist I went to wasn’t a fit, and I started making excuses to postpone or cancel our sessions. But when the issues I was dealing with escalated, and I had a particularly terrifying panic attack, I knew I owed it to myself—and the people around me—to try again.   Thankfully, the second therapist I saw changed everything. (In fact, I still see her almost every week—ten years later!) It took time and a lot of effort and patience on my part, but she helped me reconnect with the inner voice I had lost touch with over the years. Learning to trust that voice not only empowered me to show up more authentically at home and at work, but it helped me navigate some of my hardest moments with clarity and conviction.   Therapy isn’t the same for everyone, and it can take time to see how it works for you. If you’re a therapy skeptic like I used to be, I get it. But I’ve learned that sometimes we owe it to ourselves to try the thing we’re unsure about.
