Mona Chalabi Instagram - In 2002, Moshe Ya’alon (who was then the chief of staff for the Israeli Defense Forces) said “This is first and foremost a war of ideology, and as such the media factor, the psychological impact of our actions, is critical. If we understand that a photograph of a tank speaks against us on CNN, we can take this into account in our decision as to whether or not to send in the tank.”

Mona Chalabi Instagram - The Israeli government has also destroyed at least:
• 20% of the bakeries in Gaza
• 51% of educational facilities (which were just being used as shelters anyway - right now, 0% of children in Gaza have access to education according to the UN)
• 16 hospitals and 32 health care centers
• 3 churches and 56 mosques

This isn't just about the right to housing, the Israeli government is committing urbicide - the premeditated and deliberate destruction of cities. What's worse, winter is coming. Millions of Palestinians who have been pushed from their homes will now have to face the weather without a roof above their heads. Some of them are now in refugee camps - those are places to live but they’re nowhere to have a life.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - When people like me speak about Palestine, it’s easy to dismiss our voices as opinions that are simply based on identity. But many of us were exposed to different sources of information - I was raised in a household where my parents regularly consumed western news as well as news from countries that recognized that Gaza and the West Bank are in Palestine and produced journalism with that recognition in mind.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Using a brand new account, I put two questions to ChatGPT (a computing system that gives people answers based on a summary of huge amounts of publicly accessible information).

This is why I care about fair journalism, why I care about headlines that say Palestinians “died” and Israelis were “killed” - because we are documenting the present for future artificial intelligence, algorithms and government policies and calculations for how many bombs to buy and where to send them to. ChatGPT, like all artificial intelligence, has been taught by us. We have a responsibility to be thoughtful about how we use our words and to think critically about the words we’re reading, even the ones presented by supposedly neutral sources.

All people deserve justice. But real justice can’t be had if “it’s complicated” for some of us but not for others.
Mona Chalabi Instagram - The New York Times has consistently mentioned Israeli deaths more often than Palestinian deaths. What’s more, their coverage of Israeli deaths is *increasing* as more Palestinians are dying. Israeli deaths have been mentioned the most in the past few days, even though Israeli deaths have plateaued since 10/12 and Palestinian deaths have skyrocketed

Please read the notes below on this data - it’s crucial context.

📎 In addition to the bias in sheer volume of coverage, there was a huge difference in the language used. The word “slaughter” was used 53 times in these articles since 10/7 to describe the deaths of Israelis and zero times to describe the death of Palestinians. The word “massacre” shows up 24 times in reference to Israelis and once in reference to Palestinians.
📎 The articles rarely mention the names of Palestinians who die — instead using terms like “mourner”, “resident”, “assailant” or “militant”.
📎 In one article, a murdered Palestinian was simply referred to as the “bloodied corpse” of a presumed terrorist. This is still counted as a mention of a Palestinian death in the data despite the framing. Israelis who died were often mentioned individually and by name with reference to their families and professions which humanized them in comparison to anonymous Palestinians.

Sources: This data was compiled and analyzed by Holly Jackson, a researcher at University of California, Berkeley based on 991 New York Times articles posted between 10/7 and 10/18. The articles were selected if they contained any of the keywords: Palestine, Israel, Palestinian, and Israeli. 500 articles were automatically tagged to have mentions of death or words related to death. Holly read all death related sentences in these articles and tagged whether the sentence was talking about Palestinians, Israelis, both, or neither (i.e. something unrelated).

The data on deaths is from OCHA (but Palestinians are struggling to count and register deaths so their numbers are likely to be an undercount).

Mona Chalabi Instagram - The more crowded a city is, the more people are likely to be killed when a bomb drops from the skies above them. Rafah is currently one of the most crowded places on earth. It has twice as many people per hectare as NYC but instead of skyscrapers to stack souls, it’s a city of tents.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - While Israeli victims are documented as people who were loved, Palestinians are uprooted, even in death. They’re not described as fathers or mothers, daughters or sons - they’re simply dead bodies. This summary doesn’t fully capture all the dehumanisation that is often present in the language of journalism. For example, Palestinian deaths are often mentioned in the context of vengeance (“retaliation”/“retaliatory”/“retaliated” appear 190 times in this dataset) and, unlike Israeli deaths/hostages, these victims are rarely mentioned by name.

Here are some specific examples of how BBC News uses language to minimize Palestinian suffering:
* “Some 1,200 people have been killed in Israel, while more than 1,000 have died in retaliatory air strikes on Gaza.”
* “Israelis reject any comparison between the way Hamas kills civilians and the way Palestinian civilians die in their air strikes.”

There are only a few words where Palestinians get more mentions; “killed”, “died” (hardly surprising given that the Palestinian death toll is about 25x higher than the Israeli one at this point) and “wife” (again, I don’t find this surprising since the media is always much more interested in Arab patriarchies than Western ones).

This analysis is based on the majority of published BBC articles relating to Palestine/Israel, scraped between 10/7 and 12/2 by Jan Lietava (@yan.json) and Dana Najjar (@jarz_d), including 672 articles and 4404 posts in livefeeds. 1485 documents were automatically tagged as containing sentences relating to death, which were then individually read and manually tagged, based on whether they talked about Palestinians, Israelis, both or neither. The sentences were then filtered by mentions of words in the table above.
Mona Chalabi Instagram - In just the past 24 hours, Israel has:
◾️ Banned UNRWA. This is the UN agency that keeps Palestinians alive in the face of systematic bombings and starvation.
◾️ Committed a massacre in Beit Lahia which has killed at least 93 Palestinians including children.
◾️ Attacked Lebanon. Again. Killing at least 60 people including children.

As always, the numbers in this illustration are a very conservative estimate. This data assumes that Palestinian children under 5 are just as likely as adults to die from Israeli violence but we know that in reality, their young bodies make them more vulnerable.
Mona Chalabi Instagram - Won a Pulitzer, gave it away.

The fourth slide is from an interview that was released last night about journalistic censorship of Palestine. Please go listen (it’s called Longform - in my bio). We spoke for four hours and it was pretty agonizing.

The day before the Pulitzer ceremony, I went to buy a dress from a Palestinian store in Brooklyn. When I walked in, the store owner and her family were sitting around a television, watching the news in silence but their grief was so loud that I was ashamed to interrupt. This beautiful dress and abaya also came with a matching hijab for $65 total - I hope that’s a price point that means a lot of you reading this can go and support Diana’s Fashion World in Bay Ridge (full disclosure, I added the slit myself 😈).

I’m grateful I got the chance to celebrate this prize back in May with the people who worked on this project with me. And, as I explain in the podcast, I remain ridiculously grateful to every one of you reading this who has supported my work by sharing it with others. You’re the reason I’ve got the strength to continue speaking, writing and drawing freely.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - It’s awful that antisemitism is so prevalent and Zionism is so powerful that I need to state the obvious: of course Israeli citizens don’t deserve to die, no matter the policies of the government they live under. And I also refuse to characterize an attack that takes place within a context of apartheid as “unprovoked” or a “surprise”. There is a system of oppression used by the Israeli government against the Palestinian people that is designed to create suffering and suffocation, to rob people of their dignity and their rights. It is a system that has been in place for years and has been dialed up on a daily basis. If that isn’t a provocation I don’t know what is.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - If Gaza’s population were summed up in 100 characters, they would look something like this. Despite Israel’s occupation, families could be seen relaxing on the seashore, farmers were able to sell their produce and children (who make up 47% of Gaza’s population and so are represented as 47 of these 100 characters) could learn at school.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - The practice of detaining Palestinians without charge or trial existed long before October 7 but the rate has increased by about 100% because of Israel’s recent mass arrest campaigns. Reports of violence and torture by Israeli prison guards have also increased over this time.

One Palestinian man described an Israeli officer urinating on his face while another yelled “die, die you trash”. Women detainees have been subjected to multiple forms of sexual assault and at least two were reportedly raped. These accounts have been documented by the UN and Amnesty International. The IRC has also confirmed that Palestinian prisoners have been denied contact with their families and lawyers since October 7.

Both of these numbers are estimates from Israeli authorities. Around 30 of the Israeli hostages and 15 of the Palestinian prisoners are thought to have died since October 7.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Checking neutrality on @bbcnews.

Their coverage has consistently shown a disproportionate bias towards Israeli deaths rather than Palestinian ones. These lines in the top chart are largely unaffected by the mounting Palestinian death toll shown in the bottom chart.

If you look close at that bottom chart, you’ll see that the cumulative Israeli deaths declined on November 10. That’s because Israeli officials revised down their estimate of victims from 1,400 to 1,200. On December 15, the estimate was revised down again to 695 civilians and 373 members of security forces.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - You might not be able to control your government’s budget between elections but you can control how you spend your money.

In 2020, US customs said that products made in illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land could now be labelled “Made In Israel” instead of “Made in the West Bank/Gaza”. This change from the US government formalized and legitimized theft.

The UN has published a list of 97 companies that have business in or with these settlements. I’ll link to the full report in my stories and then save it as a highlight. I made this illustration in 2021 so I’ve updated it to include a few additional companies (McDonalds handed out thousands of free meals to Israeli soldiers this week).

Boycotting works. In 2022, General Mills (the company that makes Cheerios, Häagen-Dazs, Yoplait, Larabar and so much more) decided to divest from the Israeli occupation after a lot of international pressure. AirBnb initially said that they wouldn’t be offering up vacation homes on stolen land but then they quietly reversed their decision.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Some soldiers are traumatized by what they have done. A sniper from an “elite” IDF unit describes aiming for the knee of a Palestinian protester but hitting too high and killing the man. A mental health worker said that the soldier “can’t forget the man’s screaming not to be left alone. He also remembers vividly the evacuation [of the body], and the women who wept over him. From then on, that’s all he thinks about and all he dreams about. He says, ‘I wasn’t sent to defend the state, I was sent to murder.’”

A United Nations inquiry found that 80% of people wounded during protests in Gaza were shot by Israeli forces in the lower limbs. These protests, which began in 2018, were known as the Great March of Return. They called on Israeli authorities to lift an 11-year illegal blockade on Gaza and allow Palestinian refugees to return to their villages and towns. Over 6,000 protesters were struck by Israeli forces, many of them were left with permanent physical disabilities (Israeli authorities also routinely deny people exit permits for medical treatment outside of Gaza - only 17% of these applications were approved).

In total, 214 Palestinians, including 46 children, were killed during these protests, according to the UN. Just one Israeli soldier was prosecuted. It was for the killing of a 14-year-old boy during a demonstration. The killer was sentenced to one month in prison and a suspended prison sentence of two-months.

There’s too much to say in just one post so I’ll share links in my stories, including to that really important Haaretz piece where I got the quotes about IDF snipers.

On Tuesday night, an IDF general announced “there is no intention of allowing the residents of the northern Gaza Strip to return to their homes”.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - I saw a tweet and wondered if I could find data. The person most likely to kill a woman is the man sleeping next to her.

There’s very little national research about same-sex relationships and none at all about trans women which is especially fucked up because studies have shown trans people are 4x more likely to be victims of violent crime.

Overall, men are much more likely to become homicide victims than women but do you know what everyone has in common regardless of gender? If someone's going to kill you, it's probably a man.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Gaza is the most dangerous place in the world to be a journalist. That is according to the Committee to Protect Journalists whose spokesperson explained "the Israeli army has killed more journalists in 10 weeks than any other army or entity has in any single year. And with every journalist killed, the war becomes harder to document and to understand".

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Apartheid isn’t just a system of explicitly racist rules. It functions by blurring those policies in confusing and frustrating ways. Since this list was published in May 2010, the rules change all the time for no apparent reason and they are no longer stated publicly (or even shared privately with international diplomats or aid agencies). Israeli apartheid has become even more oppressive.

This system is not designed to protect Israelis, it is designed to prevent Palestinians from having healthy, dignified and joyful lives (“biscuits and sweets” are not a security threat).

The illustrations were inspired by @mousbay who read this list to an audience in April. It was profound, especially the ending (cartons for transporting chicks = 👍🏻, chicks = ✋🏻).

Mona Chalabi Instagram - At least five of the 21 members of Columbia’s board seem to have a personal interest in crushing student protests (a reminder: students are demanding that their university divest from Israeli genocide and the occupation of Palestine).

Some other notes:
• Although he’s the cousin of Penny Pritzker (she’s on the board at Harvard, forced Claudine Gay out of her job) and nephew of Governor JB Pritzker (said he stands “unequivocally” with Israel), I didn’t include Columbia trustee Adam Pritzker here. Interestingly though, Adam appears to have only one online account which is on Cellar Tracker, a site for wine lovers. On April 21, a few days after the NYPD had begun their crackdown on peaceful protests at Columbia, Adam was reviewing a white wine noting its “nice bouquet of citrus and melon”. The wine producer, “Yatir Creek” is an Israeli producer that operates out of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.
• Some students have claimed that HEICO is part of Columbia’s endowment. The first demand made by SJP is for transparency because it’s not clear what the university has invested in.
• Jeh Johnson is also the former Secretary of Homeland Security.
• And lastly, if you don’t think that the use of AI and surveillance in Israel is frightening, please read reporting from Spencer Ackerman about how autonomous systems have been used by the Israeli military to fire on Palestinian civilians.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Last week, faculty at several New York universities organized the People’s Graduation because so many ceremonies were moved or cancelled (the President of Columbia was more interested in hosting cops on campus than her students). I’m so grateful to have been there. Unfortunately, I started ugly crying when I saw the faces of the Palestinian journalists in the crowd and could barely get the words from my mouth to the mic. I’m not going to say something trite like “I’m proud of these kids” - I’m mostly just sad and bitter that this class got too old too soon. They had to spend their educational time teaching people who should know better.

As a thank you, I made this limited edition print as a gift for the class of 2024. Only the good got them.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Students across the US are demanding that their universities disclose and divest from companies that support the Israeli occupation. These brave protesters understand that their institutions and their tuition fees are supporting this genocide. But even if you’re not a student at one of these big colleges, the misuse of money is clear.

Israel controls everything that enters and leaves Gaza (including books to read, and bricks to build colleges) but the people of Gaza still managed to create 12 universities to educate themselves. Palestine has one of the highest adult literacy rates in the entire world.

Now Israel, with the support of the US, has now severely damaged or entirely destroyed every single one of those universities.

Children in Gaza have not been able to attend school since October. In the West Bank too, children are forced to miss school or do remote learning because of Israeli road closures and Israeli settler violence. Call it educide, call it scholasticide, call it epistemicide - whatever words you say, it reveals the desire to eradicate Palestinian culture and dignity. It also shows us that the US government is far more interested in its allyship with Israel than educating its own people.

On October 6, 2023 the value of a Lockheed Martin share was $402. Today, they’re worth $603. The company produces weapons that are used by the Israeli military in Palestine, Lebanon and Syria.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - I wanted to find out which members of Congress are profiting from the killing of people in Gaza. This was hard to do - the illustration shows all purchases and sales by current members of weapons stock where the deal was worth more than $1,000. But it only covers the period 2020-2023 and only includes five companies (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon).

This illustration also does not show the millions of dollars spent by these companies in campaign contributions to politicians in order to help secure future contracts. There’s a wide range here because representatives don’t have to disclose the specific amount of their trading, they instead state an estimate and that’s what gets published in the record.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Right now, there’s an Israeli-imposed media blackout in Palestine, so these numbers matter more than ever. Palestinian journalists have either been murdered (at least 24 so far) or else they’re silenced by the disconnection of phone and internet access, so the international press needs to do better.

Sources: This data was compiled and analyzed by Holly Jackson, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. The data on deaths is from OCHA. She chose these three publications because she found that they were among the most read news sources in the United States. I’m going to link to her original data in my stories.

These simple numbers (based on thousands of articles) reveal some complicated facts. The New York Times has covered the violence in Palestine and Israel more than any other major US publication (and has done a better job now of considering Palestinian lives worthy of journalism than at any other time I can remember) but it’s still flawed. And depressingly, it’s less flawed than the Wall Street Journal or the Washington post.

The coverage on Palestine and Israel is deeply skewed for lots of reasons. Bias can come out in the editing process even more than the writing process so don’t just blame the person with the byline. But it’s also because the Israeli government has a larger and more effective communications and press team than the Palestinian authorities could ever have. Every time that the Israeli authorities put out a statement, journalists report on it. Palestinians just don’t have the resources to be issuing so many statements, especially right now.

Journalists have to work really hard to make sure that we’re not just listening to the people with louder voices.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Since January 19 (when the ceasefire came into effect) Israeli airstrikes have killed 92 Palestinians and wounded 822 according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. In fact, Gaza was bombed the day that the ceasefire came into effect. The Israeli government didn’t even honor the terms of the agreement for 24 hours.

This airstrike list is far from comprehensive - it comes from Airwars which only documents credible allegations of civilian harm. Since Israel has killed so many Palestinian journalists and has prohibited foreign journalists from entering, it is possible that airstrikes did in fact take place on those blank dates.

About 1.9 million people in Gaza have been displaced since October 7 (that’s over 85% of the total population). But this conflict didn’t start on October 7. Most Gazans were already refugees - 1.7 million of them had been pushed out of their homes and villages *before* October. Now, they’re refugees for the second time (at least).

Source: United Nations, 2023 (note that this is probably an underestimate. Not everyone registers with the United Nations as a refugee, so the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics has a higher total number of 6.4 million)

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Terrorist attacks committed by Muslim extremists receive 357% more US press coverage than those committed by non-Muslims. And yes, detonating booby traps in civilian areas that kill children and leave a whole population scared of using their electrical devices meets the definition of terrorism. But I’ve seen the adjective “impressive” and “success” appear in press coverage to describe the latest Israeli attacks against Lebanon (not opinion pieces, news reports). Reverse the victims and attackers and the adjective would have been “barbaric”.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - If you’re seeing videos of Palestinian detainees being released, you’ll see that most of them look unwell. That’s because Palestinians are routinely abused while in Israeli custody. A recent report notes “several forms of torture and cruel treatment: beatings; positional torture/stress positions; sleep deprivation; denial of human needs (food, water, and access to a toilet); demeaning detainees by screaming, cursing, and spitting at them; forcing detainees to witness others, sometimes their own family members, being interrogated and/or tortured; and extended isolation or solitary confinement. In order to extract information and confessions, Israeli authorities regularly rely on deception, such as false claims that a friend or relative has been arrested or killed, and other psychological tactics, like describing the burdens placed on the defendant’s family”.

One study looked at 752 affidavits from Palestinian children detained by Israel before October 2023. It found that 96% of them were interrogated without a family member present and 100% weren’t accompanied by a lawyer.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - When journalists do not question power structures, they uphold them. Today, we will be told again about the suffering of the people in one bar of this illustration. We will be told to honor 1 year of their pain by the same journalists who have ignored 76 years of occupation, apartheid, imprisonment and killing.

Where possible, I used the midpoint of a range because it’s always hard to find exact casualty figures. The estimate for Palestine comes from an open letter published last week from 99 US medical professionals who have worked in Gaza. They believe this number is still an underestimate.

Sources: Library of Congress (WW1 data), Archives of Iranian Medicine 2013, Population and Development Review 1995, Defence Casualty Analysis System, America in Vietnam by Guenter Lewy 1980. The Israeli death toll is from October 7 (695 Israeli civilians, 373 security forces and 71 foreigners) as well as 727 soldiers since October 7.
Mona Chalabi Instagram - I’ve been speaking to these researchers since November to write this piece. Unfortunately, their findings have been misrepresented in most coverage - they have *not* found that the death toll in Gaza is actually 186,000. In a way, what they’re saying is much more powerful.

Their research shows that if forced starvation and deprivation of health services continues, the death toll will soar to this enormous figure. They are warning us what will happen if these lethal restrictions are not lifted and violence continues. The Israeli government (and governments that support them) have the ability to stop these deaths if they so choose.

What’s even more shocking about their research is how conservative these estimates are. The final death toll could be much higher meaning that more than 8% of people in Gaza will be killed.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Not long after the US began bombing Iraq, doctors started to say that they were seeing a huge, huge increase in rates of cancer and "abnormalities" in babies. In 2010, researchers finally showed that this wasn't anecdotal. In Fallujah, leukemia rates increased by 2,200% and childhood cancer increased by 1,260%. They also found that brain tumors rose by 740% and infant mortality rates were 820% higher than they were in neighboring countries.

The explanation for all of this was simple: uranium. The researchers found the element in women's hair and believe that uranium weapons were used by the US in Iraq (similar evidence was found in Gaza where Israel has used uranium weapons against civilians).

I included the comparison here to another atrocity not because I want to diminish it. The US attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki *should* be regarded as despicable acts. But I want to underline that the US has a long history of human rights abuses and I also want to highlight that not all of those abuses get the same recognition.

Mona Chalabi Instagram - Whatever the outcome of tomorrow’s election, we’re probably going to hear a lot about “foreign interference” (especially from the losing party). I thought it was worth posting up a little reminder that the US has a loooong history of trying to change electoral outcomes abroad.

The US meddled in 128 foreign elections in the period 1946-2014, twice as many as Russia according to a new study by Dr Dov H. Levin. The strategies for influencing elections include using campaign funding, giving or taking aid and using “dirty tricks” (e.g. spreading scandalous exposés/lies about rival candidates, bribing people to stay out of the race or even physically harming rivals).

In the post Cold War era, the top US targets for election interference have been Serbia/Yugoslavia (7 intervention attempts), followed by Israel and Venezuela (4 attempts each). This data is separate from coup attempts. In 2022, when asked if Trump’s attempt to stay in power was a coup, his former national security adviser John Bolton said that wouldn’t be an accurate description, adding, “as somebody who has helped plan coups d’état – not here, but, you know, other places – it takes a lot of work.” Bolton has been linked to at least 131 coup attempts according to a separate dataset from the Cline Center at the University of Illinois.

• 51% of educational facilities (which were just being used as shelters anyway - right now, 0% of children in Gaza have access to education according to the UN)

This isn't just about the right to housing, the Israeli government is committing urbicide - the premeditated and deliberate destruction of cities. What's worse, winter is coming.

Mona Chalabi - 90.9K Likes - The New York Times has consistently mentioned Israeli deaths more often than Palestinian deaths.

Mona Chalabi - 67.5K Likes - While Israeli victims are documented as people who were loved, Palestinians are uprooted, even in death.

The day before the Pulitzer ceremony, I went to buy a dress from a Palestinian store in Brooklyn. When I walked in, the store owner and her family were sitting around a television, watching the news in silence but their grief was so loud that I was ashamed to interrupt. This beautiful dress and abaya also came with a matching hijab for $65 total – I hope that’s a price point that means a lot of you reading this can go and support Diana’s Fashion World in Bay Ridge (full disclosure, I added the slit myself 😈).

Despite Israel’s occupation, families could be seen relaxing on the seashore, farmers were able to sell their produce and children (who make up 47% of Gaza’s population and so are represented as 47 of these 100 characters) could learn at school.

These 100 tiny illustrations can show you what has happened to 2.2 million people in the space of just a few months.

This analysis is based on the majority of published BBC articles relating to Palestine/Israel, scraped between 10/7 and 12/2 by Jan Lietava (@yan.json) and Dana Najjar (@jarz_d), including 672 articles and 4,404 posts in livefeeds. 1,485 documents were automatically tagged as containing sentences relating to death, which were then individually read and manually tagged, based on whether they talked about Palestinians, Israelis, both or neither.

Mona Chalabi - 47.8K Likes - You might not be able to control your government’s budget between elections but you can control how you spend your money.

Caption : You might not be able to control your government’s budget between elections but you can control how you spend your money. Mona Chalabi - 47.4K Likes - Some soldiers are traumatized by what they have done.

Mona Chalabi - 42.9K Likes - Apartheid isn’t just a system of explicitly racist rules.

Mona Chalabi - 39.3K Likes - Students across the US are demanding that their universities disclose and divest from companies that support the Israeli occupation.

Note: The researchers controlled for factors like target type, number of fatalities, and whether or not the perpetrators were arrested. And this vast difference still stood.

Mona Chalabi - 30.6K Likes - I’ve been speaking to these researchers since November to write this piece.

The queen was born in a year when female life expectancy was 70.6 years but she died at 96. I’ll mourn all the people who didn’t get an extra 25 years with their loved ones because they didn’t have the finest of everything.
