Nia Pettitt Instagram - I didn’t get to meet my Grandmother as she died before I was born. When I arrived at Gorée Island I saw this beautiful Queen selling some traditional Senegalese desserts and I admired her from afar. Hours later, @hawo_kane arrived and we wandered around shooting. I coincidentally packed this dress I bought at a market the day before and when Hawo began speaking to Ms. Fatou, she began complimenting me and allowed me to shoot with her. I remembered my dress and had a desire to wear it l. I didn’t have anywhere to change but she let me into her home. In that short encounter, I got a glimpse into my African Grandmothers love. It felt so safe and warm. I didn’t plan to shoot this at all but the photos that we took together are my favourite of all time. I did everything by myself for the first salon so having this support system filled my heart with an abundance of love. We started our day early on a Sunday and after this project, I don’t think I ever want to sand down a wall for a while. It’s coming along together and although there is still so much to do, progress is being made! One week left till I share the location, the new menu and open up bookings for the new space. Nia Pettitt Instagram - SALON RENOVATION SERIES, episode #4. 💕 — I finally chose a paint colour and I’m so happy with it, it’s chic and not too overpowering. The space is taking shape now and there are only a few tasks left to be done until it is complete such as the basins installed, the mirrors put up and all the light fixtures to be put on. The one thing I’ve learned amongst many lessons through social media is that life has different chapters. They all have different themes, different people who come and go and an abundance of lessons. Embrace each one, don’t dwell on the past and what could’ve been if you had done things differently. Just take all those lessons and apply them to your future. I grew in so many ways and I’m thankful for all the lessons I learned along the way. I thank you all for riding with me, supporting my collaborations, visiting my salon and being a great community. 1. You set the standard for how people treat you and see you. It all starts with how you treat yourself. If you want to be treated with respect then be sure to respect yourself.

2. If you want to be forgiven, learn to forgive. No-one is perfect.

3. Even in the midst of chaos, eat and look after yourself. You cannot be at your best if your cup is empty.

4. Healing is not always going to look and feel pretty. It requires uncomfortable conversations, clearing out the hurt deep within and sitting down with your younger self. Go at your own pace and give yourself grace.

5. Be kind to yourself, you are not always going to get things right the first time or make everyone happy. Move with positive intention and try your best.

6. Listen to your body, it will tell you to avoid situations/ people or decisions before they occur. Don’t ignore that gut feeling within.
