Caption : Okay Friends. It’s time for an update and some Truth Time. I know a lot of you have noticed that I haven’t been present on social media lately. I needed to take a break, clear my head, ask some important questions and find some quiet. But now I’ve had some time to be with myself and I’m ready to share because I think a lot of you can relate to what I’ve been feeling. Back in September I got COVID from someone not masked properly on set. It was my first time with the virus. I was positive and in bed sick for two weeks, then I spent another 4-6 weeks battling fatigue, malaise and recurring symptoms. My Doctors told me to practice “radical rest” and for the first time in many years it was a couple of months where I couldn’t just keep going. I could’t really work, exercise or interact. And suddenly, waves of sadness, anxiety and fear came washing over me. Like many of you, I realized I’ve spent the last three years of COVID coping, living on adrenalin, anxiety and trying to outrun the fear and pain of what we’ve all been through with this pandemic. And I’m one of the lucky ones who was able to stay safe and support my family while so many lost so much. Jobs, safety and in the worst cases life. But in the day to day so many of us lost things that aren’t as catastrophic but that leave lasting holes. Loss of goals, career paths, planned milestones, celebrations and many different kinds of lost relationships. And we just had to keep going. I have found these past few months that my mind and body were surrendering to the depression and sadness in a way I couldn’t when survival mode was paramount. And that’s okay. We have to feel these things and move through them so we can heal. I acknowledge my privilege and blessings and also acknowledge my sadness and loss. One of my favourite quotes of late is “There’s no way out but through.” It’s been a challenging time but now I’m back, feeling good and with so much more to say in the weeks to come. Caption : More TRUTH Talk!💪🏽💃🏽👗🥊 A lot of Women on TV don’t just slip on these form fitting dresses and outfits onto our “perfect bodies” and wander off into the Sunset. We got serious ARMOUR under there! Pulling things in, lifting them up, squishing them down. I’ve done shows where I had Spanx sewn into bras, pinned into control-top pantyhose, and topped with dresses made of wet-suit material. That’s why it doesn’t look like I have tummy rolls or “double-boob” or whatever other bullshit we judge women for. And it’s expensive and uncomfortable and NOT REAL! On one show I did, where I got a lot of positive attention for my Body, it took TWO WARDROBE ASSISTANTS to pull me in and out of my dresses because they were so tight and the “under-armour” was so elaborate. Is that really “My Body”? No, it’s a manipulation like filters and photo editing. I’ve gone many nights in my career not eating, not PEEING and trying to avoid sitting because my wardrobe was so controlling. Most of our ideas about Women and Beauty are actually about controlling us and making us buy things. And I know I’m a part of the problem sometimes so I wanted to share this Truth with you. Never forget that the people you wish you looked like on TV don’t actually look like that either. You’re perfect. Caption : ❤️My Sweet Friends, Fans and Family. Hello Again. I know that many of you noticed that I took a little Social Media break this Winter. It has been almost two months since my last post. It was not an intentional break at first. In December I found myself feeling exhausted by the thought of trying to share my feelings as the New Year approached and I decided to listen to and respect that instinct. Like many of you, 2021 was one of the hardest years of my Life. I am someone who has so many points of privilege but, even with all of the advantages I am lucky to have, I found myself wilting and grappling with the heaviness and anxiety of the pandemic, the political and cultural heartaches we have encountered and the professional and personal tolls that this moment in the World has taken. In each day I have had moments of feeling great fear and great Hope, profound sadness and profound Gratitude. It has been a time of looking at my life and the World around me and asking myself who I want to be and how I want to walk through this new World as I Grow and Change. I needed to take some time to sit in these feelings and face these challenges and find my centre again. The best advice I received in this time was to let myself feel all these things. Caption : I was crossing the street yesterday and guy in a car yelled “Get out of the road fattie”. It’s crazy how, even though I’m a grown ass woman who knows the guy is a tool, it still upset me. It brought back terrible memories of my childhood bullying flooding back and an old familiar feeling of shame. But I’m far enough along in my journey that I was able to pretty quickly move on, reminding myself that “hurt people, hurt people”. That men cutting Women down to feel powerful is about them and not us. And that the whole incident had nothing to do with me. BUT, what I also realized is that had he yelled anything else, had he yelled “You’re too tall”, “your style sucks” or even “You’re ugly”, I would have just laughed and brushed it off as the stupidity of a sad little man. It wouldn’t have even registered. But small men know as well as we do how impossible body standards, diet culture and body shaming have damaged Women’s self-esteem. It was because I have this cultural fat phobia that it affected me. I would rather someone tell me that I’m stupid, mean, arrogant or un-talented than for someone to call me fat. And that’s “F#%KED UP! It’s similar to how we’d rather irreparably damage our bodies with dieting than live in healthier bigger bodies. It’s a cultural sickness and it’s wrong. I’d like to thank my friend @jimivere for introducing me to the term for a guy like the one who yelled at me on the street. “Douche Canoe”. He was a Douche Canoe. But so is this culture for Women. Caption : #measureyourpowernotyourdresssize ❤️Finding physical strength and Power through exercise was the initial motivation for my # but the reality is that true Power has many elements: Mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, the list goes on. I saw an eating disorder councillor for the first time right before my battle with COVID last Summer. Both experiences made me want to re-evaluate my relationship with #exercise and my Body. To check in and make sure that exercise was still a positive, healthy outlet for me, that it hadn’t become an obsession or another way to try and change my Body to meet unrealistic standards of beauty. Much like the toxic “wellness” industry, exercise is often used to promote the idea that, as women, we aren’t enough the way we are. That we need to change ourselves, work harder and spend more money to have value. It’s all part of the machine. So I took a few months to stop all workouts. I gave myself permission to stop, to know that my body might change, that I may “lose ground” with the progress I’ve made physically or gain weight. And I’ll be honest, the fear that I felt about those things was concerning and proved that I’ve still got a long way to go with my #selfesteem and eating disorder journey. But I also discovered that exercise really is about more than body image for me. I really missed my workouts. They help my mental health, physical health, make me feel empowered and offer opportunities for community. It’s a balance and it’s NOT healthy for everyone. So now I am back to my old fitness routines but with a consciousness that I didn’t have before. Listening to my body and emotions more. Putting less pressure on myself and resting when I need to rest. This F%*ked up culture has been hurting my relationship with my Body since I was a child but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the Power and Strength to change that with time. It’s not our fault that we ended up with these negative feelings about what we see in the mirror but we owe it to ourselves not to let this pain define us forever. Caption : ❤️More Truth time. Measure Your Power, not your dress size. And Power is not just Physical, it is Emotional and Spiritual as well. Covid, my industry and Adulting have taken their toll the last few years. Particularly with the stress of the last 12 months I found myself back down the rabbit hole of disordered eating, body dysmorphia and an overall lack of respect for the incredible instrument that is my body. Long days and nights of counting grams of carbohydrates, looking at numbers on a scale and wondering if after all these years I have a chance to let go of this particular kind of pain. Unfortunately, I know that many of you know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m sad to say I believe that most Women in this culture, and likely in most cultures, are victims of the societal pressure to conform to this insanity. But a beautiful thing happened last week. For the first time since the lockdowns in 2020 I got in a plane and headed to Europe with my Best Girlfriend to explore Germany and Paris, and be together and rest and try and reconnect with ourselves and each other. And an amazing thing happened, I woke up a week into the trip and realized I hadn’t counted a calorie, tracked a step or worried about exercise or how I looked for the entire duration. Turns out, away from home, away from work and the expectations that I and my culture put on me…I’m very happy with myself. I hope I can find a way to integrate this feeling when I step off the plane in Canada. When I go back to day-to-day life and the habits and expectations I let myself get into in my daily routine. I’ll keep you updated on how that goes but for now I’ve been walking around Paris with my Best Girl, feeling my Best Self and Eating and Moving for the Pure Pleasure of it. Let’s try and give ourselves permission whenever we can to remember that we’re perfect just the way we are. It’s a cliché because it’s true. Love you all, love myself, and if you’re not there yet in your journey, I will hold this love in my heart for you until you’re ready for it.
