Caption : Phew this took a bit to get through but truly hoping it opens up some healthy dialogues as well as setting us up to do the internal work of challenges ourselves. I wrote this with two things in mind: 1- I’ve seen this #quote used over and over again, usually watered down and seldomly investigated. 2- #thematrix, specifically towards the end of the second movie when Neo finds out that the uprising is actually built into the system. Well it’s just like that, protest and other forms of activism that work within the system are just like that. We continue to replay the cycle expecting something new without pause long enough or fully committing to a world beyond this system. It’s a scary thought for many of us and won’t come with ease. But to break free of the cycle what are you willing to risk? ⁉️Here’s some more questions for reflection⁉️ ✨What does dismantling oppression mean to you? ✨ What do you envision when you think of a world outside of colonialism, capitalism, and imperialism? ✨ How would we go from where we are today to where we would like to be? ✨ How genuinely committed to that aim? What are your internal and external barriers? ✨ What were your ancestral ways of being before colonialism invaded and disrupted your culture? ✨ What is the revolution? What does it look like when it’s realized? We must not only know to fight against what is wrong but also have the foresight to recognize what it is we are aiming to build up to. I don’t share the consistent surveillance I am under on a daily basis. I don’t often communicate how the tabloid lies from NY post, Daily Mail etc, and many of the Black gossip sites proliferated about me with out ever actually interviewing me ( mostly shame on the Black gossip sites ) impacted my mental health, my confidence, my sense of self, my whole entire being. I rarely discuss how often Black people NOT trolls incite violence against me in my comment section. But this is my life. And this is the life of many of us who decide that we will and must fight for Black life. Even though I am way less visible than I use to, I am still perceived as a threat to white supremacy. I’ve only ever been guilty of fighting for Black people, for caring for Black people, and yet…. This is the shit that I experience often. I pray for all of us. That our world transitions into the abolitionist vision I and so many of us imagine. We all deserve better. And we will eventually receive better. Ashe oooooooLikes : 12326

Caption : #KamalaHarris #DefeatTrump Statement from Patrisse Cullors, Artist, Abolitionist Today, we witnessed a pivotal moment for the people as Joe Biden decided to drop out of the presidential race. While Biden was never the first choice for many of us, we recognize the devastatingly profound impact a second Trump presidency would have—not just on the United States, but globally. In my ongoing fight to end police and carceral violence against Black people and to create a world where Black women are free and thriving, Biden’s exit brings renewed hope. This moment allows us to push the Democratic Party to stand firmly on the side of the people and strengthens our resolve to defeat Trump. Over the next four months, we must do everything in our power to ensure we never face a Trump candidacy again. Furthermore, we must work toward a future where a multi-party system replaces the restrictive two-party framework, ensuring true representation and justice for all.Likes : 7062

She is a 9 year old journalist documenting her and her peoples experience in Gaza. She has been such an inspiration to many of us. I’m grateful she was able and willing to be interviewed. I believe the artists will save us from ourselves. I believe our children are the most powerful messengers. Lama, we love you. How do we keep the collective safe? How about using an abolitionist imagination to help bring in the collective? It’s possible to have peaceful protests and also keep everyone safe. Cops won’t do that. They never have and never will.Likes : 3377

Caption : 🙏🏽🫂❣️ 🧿 This incredible conversation which came together with the support of the amazing team at @mother_tongue_magazine was by far the most emotionally charged we have recorded on the podcast to date. Both Rabbi Brous (@sharonbrous ) and Patrisse Cullors (@osopepatrisse ) are incredible voices within their respective communities but they are also amazing human beings who have chosen in a time of immense divide to look for togetherness and oneness. Conversations like this heal. Conversations like this build coalition. Conversations like this will be the path to our collective liberation. Both in front of and behind the camera, we spent this hour misty-eyed, feeling our pain, sharing our truths and making space for one-another’s lived experiences. We also talked through the collective trauma of this moment and how we cope in a time that feels so heavy. Seeing each other’s vulnerability and humanity, and caring for each other so deeply through it, grew us closer together and showed us what is possible when we really see each other. I hope it helps others see it too. This heart-felt conversation will be live via a bonus episode of @resetthealgorithm tomorrow morning at 9am PT wherever you get your podcasts, and also available for you to read May 1st in the latest edition of Mother Tongue Magazine. If we can’t lean into our values and build coalition even when it’s hard, we aren’t going to win. And when I say we won’t win, I mean we will stay disconnected and traumatized and forget how important we are to each other. Every car that passes by must reckon with the concept of abolition. Ask themselves what Abolition is to them. He is an artist using his voice to call out the repression and violence he and is community face inside of Iran. I grew up in a police state. One that decimated my entire community. Used law enforcement to kill my dreams and created an atmosphere of so much violence I am still traumatized today by it. My work as an abolitionist is calling for global abolition. The Women.Life.Freedom movement is an inspiration. I hope we can dig deep and build out an intersectional movement that calls on police states around the world and pushes them towards abolition. That’s what I’m going to do. On this first day of Pride, I’m deeply grateful to be alive and well, sharing the story of my Blackness, Queerness, and womanness and where they intersect. So many of our Black queer ancestors didn’t make it to be elders, and while I’m not yet an elder, I feel immense gratitude for the aging process. I look back at my childhood and remember the amazing Queer young people I grew up with. I often think about Malidoma Patrice Somé one of the first West African teachers to talk about Queerness and Transness as integral parts of our spirituality. Today, on Pride Day, I’m honored to share these beautiful images of my journey from adolescence into adulthood, celebrating being here and Queer. Caption : I’ve been Queer my whole life and out for more than half of it. Caption : This work is inspired by @thenapministry Tricia Hersey has been calling on us ( Black folk ) to ‘rest as resistance.’ honored to be apart of this @wehoarts moment. Alongside the CDM co founders @calmatetupedo and @alexandrealirezadorriz who also have gorgeous billboards up on sunset blvd. Thank you @kingavriel for being such a beautiful performer in this piece. And thank you @ashleemariepreston for capturing this work the way you always are able to do. Clarity, grace and firmness. Artist Statement: Black Woman Rest is a ten-minute visual meditation, filmed amidst the serene landscapes of Joshua Tree, inspired by Tricia Hersey’s Nap Ministry. This project invites the audience to hold space for the sacred act of Black women resting. Inspired by Patrisse Cullors’ Abolitionist Meditations practice, it challenges the pervasive notion that rest is a luxury, not a right, for Black women. In a society that often demands relentless productivity, Black Woman Rest serves as a call to presence, urging viewers to acknowledge and honor the necessity of rest and restoration. This billboard project is not merely a visual experience; it is a meditative journey asking for a collective recognition of the importance of rest, especially for Black women. Through this piece, Cullors seeks to create a space for reflection, healing, and solidarity, as we collectively affirm the power and necessity of rest. 📸 @jmlaklLikes : 1991

Caption : In recent years, we’ve witnessed the brutal reality of systemic racism and police violence against Black people. We live in a world where a Black person can be killed by law enforcement in broad daylight, sparking a global uprising. ( George Floyd, 2020 uprisings ) Despite this, the initial wave of DEI initiatives that followed has faded into complacency. Four years later, the narrative has shifted, and many are now blaming Black people while ignoring the ongoing deaths and trauma we’ve endured. The year 2023 marked the deadliest year for Black people at the hands of law enforcement, yet the collective outcry has diminished. The urgency to address these issues seems to have waned, and it feels as if society has moved on, leaving us to bear the brunt of this violence alone. This stark reality underscores the need for sustained advocacy, meaningful change, and unwavering support for Black lives. I want to challenge any city across the globe who is ready to implement abolition as a viable governing/social experiment to save Black lives thus all lives. If there is ANY government official out there who wants to implement abolition, contact me. Because the hell we are all currently living in isn’t it. And the organizers and artists and people who have literally risked their lives to change this awful system need more elected officials and appointed officials to show up courageously and take on the police and prison system like our lives depend on it. #GeorgeFloyd #KeenanAnderson #DefundThePoliceLikes : 1925

Caption : My loves, Join Jasmin Young and me for a conversation on protection, self-defense, and Black women on July 13th at 1 pm. These works are for us. Let us gather at Charlie James Gallery. *Jasmin A. Young is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies. She is currently developing her manuscript, Black Women with Guns: Armed Resistance in the Black Freedom Struggle. This work fundamentally rethinks the history of the Black Freedom Movement by placing Black women’s armed activity at the center of the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. The project explores the extensive practice and advocacy of armed resistance by Black women. Dr. Young’s research interests center broadly on the intellectual history of Black women, state violence and resistance, and radical Black feminism.*Likes : 1595
