Rose Ayling-Ellis Instagram - Wow! Last night, I won the Best West End Debut Performer award at The Stage Debut. Thank you sooooo much to everyone who has voted for me. It is a very cool category to be in.
I am proud of @sohoplace for giving me the opportunity to play Celia and to the casts and crews for letting me have creative involvement and allowing BSL to be a fundamental part of the show. It was great to show the theatre industry that access can be art, and it is not something that is just there. This win is vital for the deaf community. I do often talk about the lack of captions/accessible shows in the theatre and the lack of advertising over it because I, myself, would love to go to the theatre more often than I do.
In one of the shows in ‘As You Like It’, 106 deaf people turn up at Soho place, so the deaf audience IS there and IS ready to go to the theatre. The future is looking bright, and we shall all work toward it!

Rose Ayling-Ellis Instagram - Paralympics 2024 in Paris have come to an end. It has been brilliant, and I loved co-presenting with Batman 🦇 @clarebalding. What she does behind the scenes is insane, and as a nation, we are so lucky to have her on our screens.
@elliesimmonds is such a sweetheart. Her knowledge is so impressive, and she always shares it with such elegance.
I always felt comfortable and safe sitting alongside them, which is so important because I definitely did something that was out of my comfort zone.
I couldn’t have done this without my interpreter team - Rebecca, Tobi, and Kirsty “my earpieces lady”. I couldn’t do my job if they didn’t do what they did.
Thank you to @channel4 @wearewhispertv @angustvman for providing the tools to show that deaf people can do live TV. I hope this is not the end, and we will continue seeing more deaf people breaking the barriers of what is possible. Inclusivity is everyday life, not once every four years. That is what the Paralympics have always stood for.
Now I’m going to wrap myself in a duvet, watch movies, sleep and eat crisps. I’m dead now 😂

The video is the reaction when we got back on the stage after he was kicked off. We picked up from Touchstone's line, “The more pity that fools may not speak wisely what wise men do foolishly”

In the same audience, a little deaf girl sat in the front row with her parents signing to her. Deaf members of the audience are able to sit wherever they want and whenever they want. Hearing people reading the captions, laughing and reacting to our signing on stage, coming into our world and understanding Shakespeare because of this. Two days ago, we had a BSL performance show, and 106 deaf people turn up.

This is why we do accessible theatre.

Rose Ayling-Ellis - 25.5K Likes - Here is a photo of me as a toddler. If I had been born a couple of years later, my life could have been very different.

Today, it was reported that a gene therapy trial has taken place. I knew that it was going to happen, but I didn’t expect it so soon. My first reaction was feeling terrified and heartbroken. It feel like the end.

Let me explain why.

Imagine a world where everyone is “normal”. What will become of our story, our culture, language, and identity? Will we be the last deaf generation and end up in a museum somewhere?

Deaf people have existed throughout human history. Who decides that their lives are not worth being integrated into society? Who assumes that we want to be “fixed”? Where will they draw the line?

Will all the hard work that deaf people fought for inclusivity be thrown out of the window? Why would society meet us halfway now they are the “cure”?

A cure is defined as “relieving a person of the symptoms of a disease or condition”. My deafness is not a disease or a condition. I don’t need relief from it. My deafness has given me many opportunities, and my life is richer because of it. Why would I want that to be gone?

There are many deaf people out there that are doing great things! Why should we tell them that they are broken when, in fact, they are winning?

To add insult to injury, this was released during Deaf Awareness Week. The week should be about embracing and spreading awareness about our culture. Not something to overcome.

(Please respect the decision made by the family for their little girl. Like any parent, they are doing what they believe is best for their child. This is not a rant directed towards them in any way.
