Roxane Gay Instagram - Three years ago today, @debbiemillman and I eloped. It was an amazing day but in truth, every day with Debbie is amazing in one way or another. She has an irrepressible sense of adventure, a brilliant mind, a beautiful smile, and a loving heart. She loves to sing and dance and wear hats. She has a canonical knowledge of hip hop which still amazes me. She is fiercely loyal, honest, and mega hot. She loves animals and they love her back. I could go on but I won’t! Happy anniversary, @debbiemillman.

Roxane Gay Instagram - My relationship with my wife Debbie has been one of the greatest and most surprising joys of my life and from the day we’ve met, I’ve learned (and am still learning) how to be a good partner and how to allow her to be a good partner to me. And like many queer couples, we haven’t had a lot of authentic relationship models. That’s why we were so excited to participate in Hinge’s NFAQ series, offering counsel to other queer folk navigating the dating scene.

You can find our answers to the burning dating questions so many of us have, at hinge.nfaq.co, an ever-growing resource addressing the questions and concerns shared by LGBQTIA daters.

The Emmy-nominated ROY WOOD JR. has entertained millions across stage, television, and radio. His second Comedy Central one-hour stand-up special, No One Loves You, which debuted in 2019, remains the network’s highest-rated original stand-up premiere. Roxane Gay Instagram - Politicians often say we have to wait for real political change. I wrote about how the Harris/Walz ticket offers us a new way forward. We can reignite our political imaginations and rethink how we elect our leaders because the problems we are contending with are urgent and the status quo serves the few and not the many. Link in bio.
Roxane Gay Instagram - I wrote a long essay about guns, my brother Joel, the illusion of safety, for whom our laws are made and enforced, and much more. I hope you can check it out at @everand_us. Link is in bio.

Roxane Gay Instagram - Roxane Gay is a New York Times best-selling author and believes that people who think that they can’t have an opinion in 2024 are probably the ones who have the worst opinions...
Roxane Gay Instagram - Roxane Gay posesses a unique gift for holding a mirror to the systemic ills, spiritual rifts, and private little shames that permeate our culture.

The Nebraska-born writer has never shied from unwieldy, charged, and personal subject matter. But despite the gravity of many of the issues she engages, Gay’s work is fueled by an enduring optimism. Her latest book, ‘Opinions,’ features a selection of the writer’s most insightful and provocative essays from the past decade. “People really resent Black women having opinions,” she tells the actor @jadapinkettsmith, who published her memoir ‘Worthy’ last October, below, “because they don’t think we deserve them.”

To celebrate the book’s release, Pinkett Smith called @roxanegay74 to discuss Morrison’s influence, the importance of dissent, and the wonderful chaos of married life. Link in bio to read their conversation.

Roxane Gay Instagram - For the past several years, I’ve been working on The Portable Feminist Reader, a collection of feminist scholarship across centuries, and that book is finally out today with @penguinclassics!

When my amazing editor Elda Rotor first approached me, I was excited about the project but also overwhelmed by the daunting task. How do you begin to choose a range of texts that articulate interesting ideas about feminism given the bounty from which I had to choose?

As I went into the project, I thought a lot about canon and who gets to determine what is or is not canonical. And rather than do a disservice to the scope of global feminism, I focused primarily on American feminists. I also wanted to include pieces that reflect feminist praxis, diverse cultural identities, the importance of intersectionality and even some poetry.

I crowdsourced suggestions, drew from my own knowledge, researched and spent about three years reading a lot of feminist writing. Over time, I winnowed down a rich trove of feminist thought into this reader. At the rear, you will find suggestions for further reading, listening, watching, and engaging.

I hope you check the Portable Feminist Reader out, and I hope it sparks conversation. In the meantime, I am going on a book tour and I hope you can make it to one of the events! Tonight, I’ll be at @harvardbookstore in Boston. Tomorrow, I’ll be at @wbezchicago in Chicago. And on April 4, I’ll be at @powerhousearena in New York.

You can read more about the reader, my process, the tour, and the long list of people who helped make this book possible at The Audacity (link here and in my stories: https://audacity.substack.com/p/new-book-out-today-the-portable-feminist. And if you’d like a sneak peek at the book itself, my introduction is up at Lithub today, and you’ll find a link to that piece also at The Audacity.

Roxane Gay Instagram - About a year ago, I reached out to four writers whose work I admire and asked, basically, what would you write about if you could write about anything you want, and be well paid for your effort? Over the next five months, you will see how those writers and I answered that question with a series of longform essays (10,000 words or more), called Roxane Gay Presents, in partnership with Everand (the digital subscription arm of Scribd).

First up is Julia Turshen’s “Built for This: The Quiet Strength of Powerlifting.” In this essay, Julia writes about her journey into the world of powerlifting and how it helped her develop a different, less fraught relationship with food, exercise, and her body. It was a pleasure working with Julia to really dig into the writing and find the beating heart of this essay. She did a remarkable revision that really made this piece sing.

I hope you see, in these words, Julia’s authenticity, ferocious heart, and how wholly she commits to the things and people she cares about. And when you’re done with this essay, check out her newsletter “Keep Calm and Cook On,” or her excellent cookbooks, “Simply Julia,” and “Small Victories,” and “Now & Again.”

You can find a link to Julia’s essay in my bio! And if you are new to Everand, you can sign up for a free sixty day trial at http://try.everand.com/turshen.

Roxane Gay Instagram - Twenty years ago today, Debbie Millman started her podcast Design Matters. Week after week, for the next twenty years, she sat in conversation with the world’s most interesting creative people. In each episode, Debbie explores the arc of someone’s creative life. She asks well-researched, probing questions and inevitably, because of the rigor of her research, guests ask, “How did you know that?” They marvel at a question she’s posed that they’ve never been asked before. That takes talent. When you are regularly interviewed, you develop a script. You go on autopilot and, frankly, you are asked the same questions over and over again. Debbie endeavors to break up that script and get authentic answers from her guests.

Over 20 years, Debbie has spoken to more than 600 guests. Her body of work is a masterclass on what it takes to succeed, to learn from failure, to experiment, to navigate the challenges and pleasures of success, and most importantly, to be audaciously creative. She works alongside the amazing producer Curtis Fox, but I must tell you Debbie does most of the pre-production herself. She does her own research, crafts her own questions, and books her guests. It’s remarkable. Each week, I watch her work so hard on Design Matters, putting her whole heart and the ferocity of her intellect into the endeavor. The show is not just a labor of love. It is one of the most central labors of her life.

And Debbie, herself, is audaciously creative. She is an artist, and a designer, and a preeminent brand strategist. She is a dynamic educator and dedicates much of her time, these days, to working with nonprofit organizations that fight LGBTQIA discrimination, work to end gender-based and sexual violence, and otherwise strive to make the world a better place. I don’t know how much longer she will make Design Matters, but my goodness, what a magnificent show she has created.

TWENTY YEARS! I don’t know that anyone has been doing it longer or better. Congratulations @debbiemillman. I could not be prouder of you and the show you’ve created. (Also, guys, when she is doing the podcast her voice register falls into what I call “podcast voice.” It’s hella sexy.)

Roxane Gay Instagram - Today is publication day for the second piece in Roxane Gay Presents, my series of longform essays in partnership with @everand_us. This month features “You Are a Teen Mom: Instructions” by Randa Jarrar (@rajarrar), a piece by a consummate storyteller.

Across 33 sections, Randa writes about getting pregnant at 18, the rupture it created in her family, and how she raised her young son into a young man as a single mother. It’s also the story of how Randa raised herself into the writer and woman she is today.

I started reading Randa’s writing many years ago and once I started reading, I was hooked. She has the ability to make everything she writes about interesting and often poignant; she projects strength alongside vulnerability, courage alongside fear, and these characteristics also shape this work. She defies expectations for what motherhood can look like, and is, at times, delightfully irreverent. This piece offers us the greatest of gifts: an instruction manual on how to be apologetically human.

Randa’s award-winning, widely-published work, which includes three books, explores Palestinian-American identity, the complexities of home as part of a displaced people, single parenting, and living a radical creative life. She is also a comedian, performer, filmmaker, organizer, and activist.

You can find a link to Randa’s work as an audiobook or ebook here or in my stories: https://www.everand.com/audiobook/708718099/Roxane-Gay-Everand-Originals-You-Are-a-Teen-Mom-Instructions

Randa’s award-winning, widely-published work, which includes three books, explores Palestinian-American identity, the complexities of home as part of a displaced people, single parenting, and living a radical creative life. She is also a comedian, performer, filmmaker, organizer, and activist.

Roxane Gay - 32.2K Likes - My relationship with my wife Debbie has been one of the greatest and most surprising joys of my life and from the day we’ve met, I’ve learned (and am still learning) how to be a good partner and how to allow her to be a good partner to me. And like many queer couples, we haven’t had a lot of authentic relationship models. That’s why we were so excited to participate in Hinge’s NFAQ series, offering counsel to other queer folk navigating the dating scene.

Here's a bit more about @roywoodjr:

The Emmy-nominated ROY WOOD JR. has entertained millions across stage, television, and radio. In 2015, he joined The Best F#@ing News Team as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Wood was the 2023 host of The White House Correspondents Dinner and most recently starred alongside Jon Hamm in the film Confess, Fletch which was released September 16th, and is set to executive produce the HBO Max project 1% Happy as well as an untitled medical field comedy for NBC. We can reignite our political imaginations and rethink how we elect our leaders because the problems we are contending with are urgent and the status quo serves the few and not the many. Roxane Gay - 5.9K Likes - Roxane Gay posesses a unique gift for holding a mirror to the systemic ills, spiritual rifts, and private little shames that permeate our culture.

Roxane Gay - 5.7K Likes - For the past several years, I’ve been working on The Portable Feminist Reader, a collection of feminist scholarship across centuries, and that book is finally out today with @penguinclassics!

Roxane Gay - 5.6K Likes - About a year ago, I reached out to four writers whose work I admire and asked, basically, what would you write about if you could write about anything you want, and be well paid for your effort?

Roxane Gay - 5.6K Likes - About a year ago, I reached out to four writers whose work I admire and asked, basically, what would you write about if you could write about anything you want, and be well paid for your effort?

Roxane Gay - 2.9K Likes - Twenty years ago today, Debbie Millman started her podcast Design Matters.

Caption : Twenty years ago today, Debbie Millman started her podcast Design Matters. Roxane Gay - 1.9K Likes - Today is publication day for the second piece in Roxane Gay Presents, my series of longform essays in partnership with @everand_us.
