On October 7, Hamas terrorists brutally raped women and girls. The evidence is clear — yet the silence on these war crimes is deafening. Refusing to loudly condemn these rapes — or any rapes — is a massive step backward for the women and men of the world. In my @cnn op-ed, I’m urging everyone to break the deafening silence and denounce these rapes.

The stories they shared and the trauma they witnessed will weigh on my soul for the rest of my life. The evidence is irrefutable: Hamas used rape as a tool of war. We have come so far in believing survivors of sexual assault in so many situations. If we fail to speak out against rape anytime and anywhere it occurs, we threaten to undermine hard-fought progress. This is not political. Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - For over a decade, I’ve been urging women to lean in. Now I’m calling on everyone to speak out. Rape should never be used as an act of war. This truth must be upheld despite the politics of our time. The ground gained on protecting women against sexual violence was hard-fought. Until recently, wartime rape was tolerated. A breakthrough came just thirty years ago when the armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and the DRC saw the deliberate use of mass sexual violence. Global women’s organizations and human rights activists fought for change, helping to establish that rape cannot be seen as a lesser crime. Silence on the rapes Hamas committed — or any rapes — is so dangerous because threatens to undo an entire movement. No matter what any of us believe should happen in the Middle East — no matter which marches you attend or which flag you’re flying — there are no circumstances that rationalize the atrocities Hamas carried out. And I sat and cried with released hostages, listening to their harrowing stories of survival and how they found humanity and resilience in each other. All of these people tell the story of “Screams Before Silence.” They told stories of the unspeakable sexual violence that happened to women and men, old and young, many in the very last moments of their lives. We hiked the Stanford dish and talked about our families, our hopes, and some of the struggles we had faced; he was not just kind and insightful and funny, but he carried my water bottle the entire time. So much has changed since then. We are now married, raising our children together, working side by side. But some of what started on that day has continued until now – our love for walking and talking, his kindness and insight, his ability to make me laugh. He carried my water bottle then, and now I so often feel like he is carrying me. Tom – I could not be more grateful for the life we have built together and I could not love you more.

She is an accomplished leader, a fierce advocate of abortion rights, and the strongest candidate to lead our country forward.  I was just with Vice President Harris at the @whitehouse for a screening of @screamsbeforesilence, where she stood firmly against conflict-related sexual violence in all its forms. She will defend women’s rights — and all Americans’ rights — from the Oval Office with a determined, compassionate focus.  I’m thrilled to support her.
Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - Tonight, our family lit our menorah to mark the first night of Hanukkah — joining Jews worldwide in this 2,000-year tradition. The story of Hanukkah is one of hope. It’s about the triumph of light over darkness. And it reminds us of the persistence of faith — a community surviving centuries of persecution without losing our shared identity. As we said the blessings tonight, I felt a deep connection to Jews across the globe who have persevered for centuries to continue celebrating our faith. Around the world, billions of others are also celebrating Christmas today and the values it represents: kindness, empathy, and peace and good will to all. It’s fitting that Christmas and Hanukkah fall on the same day this year. It’s a reminder of our common humanity, showing that we all seek hope, love, and compassion. Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin joined us at the Congressional screening of @screamsbeforesilence. They are two of the strongest people I’ve ever met. On October 7th, their son Hersh was one of the 240 people taken hostage by Hamas. Hersh’s arm was blown off in the attack, and he is still being held captive today. For the last 230 days, Rachel and Jon have been working tirelessly to bring Hersh and all of the remaining hostages — which include Americans and citizens from 24 countries — home. As a mother, my heart breaks for them and the families of all of the hostages. The depth of their pain is unimaginable. Their profound strength, empathy, and willingness to share their anguish with the world is remarkable. They are true heroes. We must do all that we can to #BringThemHome. @bring.hersh.home

Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It’s a chance to honor the 6 million people who were murdered just for being Jewish, and the 5 million more who were killed for who they were. And it’s an opportunity to recognize the courage of those who sacrificed their lives to save others. For me and so many other Jews, Yom HaShoah is deeply personal. We carry the stories of those who survived and those who didn’t. Growing up, I heard how my great-great-grandmother Chana Bassa left her home in Lithuania to escape persecution. If she hadn't taken that difficult journey, my family would've almost certainly died in the Nazi concentration camps. @tom_bernthal's great grandfather had relatives who were sent to be murdered in Auschwitz and other camps. Some managed to escape to France — only to be caught there and sent to their deaths in occupied Poland. Before October 7th, this dark history felt distant, but now it feels closer than ever. The lives lost. The families torn apart. The innocent people who remain hostages. The disturbing rise in antisemitism. It’s so important that we remember each Holocaust survivor and each victim — their light reminds all of us to stand against the darkness we face now.

As we said the blessing, I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of connection to Jewish people around the world — our collective strength, shared anguish, and unwavering resilience. For over 2,000 years, Jews have celebrated the Festival of Lights to remember the powerful story of the Maccabees. When the Maccabees sought to rededicate the destroyed Temple, they found a flask with only enough oil to light one candle for one night. And yet, miraculously, it lasted for eight full nights. Hanukkah is about the triumph of light. It reminds us that even in the hardest times, we have one another and there is always hope. Amid a difficult year marked by immense violence and hate, this feels more important than ever. When Paula, @iamrobgoldberg, and I created the Dave Goldberg Scholarship program, we knew it had to be more than just financial assistance. We wanted to provide these exceptional students with a big-hearted community and wrap-around support through every stage of college and beyond. I’m so proud of all these bright young students have accomplished: 97% of our first class of Goldberg Scholars have graduated and are now employed or in grad school.  Today, @tom_bernthal, @iamrobgoldberg, and I are honored to introduce the seventh class of Goldberg Scholars. We’ll have 15 students from @kippschools and 15 students from @peninsulabridge. They each embody Dave’s best qualities: leadership, character, achievement, and an entrepreneurial spirit. And many will be the first in their family to go to college.  Mahnaz is a political asylum refugee who wants to create educational opportunities for women, having grown up witnessing girls be denied the chance to learn. Alejandro is a passionate advocate for increased support for neurodivergent, low-income students to succeed in local schools. Flory uses engineering to reduce levels of pollutants in low-income communities and already worked with her mayor to enhance local train lines to improve air quality. These are just a few of the amazing new class of scholars. I believe with all my heart that the Goldberg Scholars are the diverse leaders the world needs to effect change. We’ll have 15 students from @kippschools and 15 students from @peninsulabridge. They each embody Dave’s best qualities: leadership, character, achievement, and an entrepreneurial spirit. And many will be the first in their family to go to college.  Mahnaz is a political asylum refugee who wants to create educational opportunities for women, having grown up witnessing girls be denied the chance to learn. Alejandro is a passionate advocate for increased support for neurodivergent, low-income students to succeed in local schools. Flory uses engineering to reduce levels of pollutants in low-income communities and already worked with her mayor to enhance local train lines to improve air quality. These are just a few of the amazing new class of scholars. I believe with all my heart that the Goldberg Scholars are the diverse leaders the world needs to effect change. And I know Dave would believe that too.

Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - Yesterday, thousands from our community gathered to march against antisemitism. Young and old, Jews and non-Jews, stood shoulder to shoulder — united in ensuring hope and tolerance can triumph over cynicism and hatred. The solidarity moved me to tears, more than once. In my lifetime, I have given many speeches about bias and discrimination. But this was my first-ever speech about antisemitism. As Jews, we say “Never Again.” But never again cannot mean “never again will we allow another Holocaust to happen.” It has to mean “Never again will we allow hate against any group to be tolerated.” And unity is the key to making that happen. It will take all of us to create a world free from racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, homophobia — from fear and bigotry in every form. A world where everyone can be proud of who they are. In times as difficult as these, this march gave me hope.

Passover honors the story of Exodus, when the Jewish people escaped slavery in Egypt. It’s a tale of hardship and survival and of exile and return. It’s retold at the Passover table to teach each new generation about the bittersweet history of oppression and freedom for Jews across the globe. As my parents did when I was growing up, Tom and I will talk to our children about how ending slavery and repression of anyone anywhere is the responsibility of everyone everywhere. This lesson is even more poignant for us this year. May this Passover help us reflect on our shared humanity. And may our prayers for deep and abiding peace be answered. Chag sameach.

Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - Today is Yom HaShoah, the annual day of remembrance for the 6 million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust and the millions more who were killed for who they were. It’s a day to remember the victims, honor the righteous people who helped others survive, and reflect on what kind of world we want to build and leave for our children.   This is deeply personal for me and so many Jews. My great-great-grandmother, Chana Bassa, left her home in Vilnius, Lithuania, to escape religious persecution. I would not be here today if it wasn’t for her courageous journey to Ellis Island in June 1889. If she had not left, my family almost certainly would have been killed in the Holocaust. Growing up hearing about her experience along with the millions who endured the horrors of the Holocaust, opened my eyes to how much evil there could be in the world – and how we have to stand firmly against hatred of all kinds always.   As Jews, we say “Never Again.” Since October 7th, this vow is more resonant than ever. During times as polarizing and scary as these, we owe it to our ancestors to speak out against racism of all kinds. We owe it to our children to work towards a world free from prejudice and hate.

Sheryl Sandberg Instagram - This week, I was honored to speak at the French National Assembly, the British Parliament, and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs — joining with leaders from around the world to stand against rape. We came together to give voice to the women who were silenced by Hamas on Oct. 7. And we heard testimonies from three brave witnesses who saw firsthand the brutality of Hamas and its agonizing aftermath. Chief Superintendent Mirit Ben Mayor talked about the police investigation of Hamas’ crimes and hearing from witnesses who saw women being sexually attacked and raped and women’s bodies with no clothes, legs spread apart in a split, genitals cut off, and shot. Simcha Greiniman, a volunteer with Israel’s emergency response team, described the abused bodies of women his team recovered — underwear bloodied, one with nails in her genital region. And Shari Mendes, a member of an all-women’s army reserve unit, was tasked with preparing deceased female soldiers for burial at the Shura army base. She saw with her own eyes a systematic focus on female facial and genital mutilation. Their testimonies will forever weigh on my soul. This conversation goes beyond the politics of our time. If we can’t agree that the sexual violence Hamas committed is wrong, then we have accepted the unacceptable. Rape is terror. It’s torture. There are no circumstances that justify it. This is as true when it’s happening in Israel — as it is in Ukraine, Ethiopia, and anywhere around the globe. The intention of sexual violence is to generate fear. Let’s instead generate justice and ensure these crimes do not go unpunished. We owe this to all victims and survivors — past, recent, and future.

Young and old, Jews and non-Jews, stood shoulder to shoulder — united in ensuring hope and tolerance can triumph over cynicism and hatred. The solidarity moved me to tears, more than once. In my lifetime, I have given many speeches about bias and discrimination. But this was my first-ever speech about antisemitism. As Jews, we say “Never Again.” But never again cannot mean “never again will we allow another Holocaust to happen.” It has to mean “Never again will we allow hate against any group to be tolerated.” And unity is the key to making that happen. It will take all of us to create a world free from racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, homophobia — from fear and bigotry in every form. A world where everyone can be proud of who they are. In times as difficult as these, this march gave me hope.

Caption : Yesterday, thousands from our community gathered to march against antisemitism. Young and old, Jews and non-Jews, stood shoulder to shoulder — united in ensuring hope and tolerance can triumph over cynicism and hatred. The solidarity moved me to tears, more than once. In my lifetime, I have given many speeches about bias and discrimination. But this was my first-ever speech about antisemitism. As Jews, we say “Never Again.” But never again cannot mean “never again will we allow another Holocaust to happen.” It has to mean “Never again will we allow hate against any group to be tolerated.” And unity is the key to making that happen. It will take all of us to create a world free from racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, homophobia — from fear and bigotry in every form. A world where everyone can be proud of who they are. In times as difficult as these, this march gave me hope.

We came together to give voice to the women who were silenced by Hamas on Oct. 7. And we heard testimonies from three brave witnesses who saw firsthand the brutality of Hamas and its agonizing aftermath. Chief Superintendent Mirit Ben Mayor talked about the police investigation of Hamas’ crimes and hearing from witnesses who saw women being sexually attacked and raped and women’s bodies with no clothes, legs spread apart in a split, genitals cut off, and shot. Simcha Greiniman, a volunteer with Israel’s emergency response team, described the abused bodies of women his team recovered — underwear bloodied, one with nails in her genital region. And Shari Mendes, a member of an all-women’s army reserve unit, was tasked with preparing deceased female soldiers for burial at the Shura army base. She saw with her own eyes a systematic focus on female facial and genital mutilation. Their testimonies will forever weigh on my soul. This conversation goes beyond the politics of our time. If we can’t agree that the sexual violence Hamas committed is wrong, then we have accepted the unacceptable. Rape is terror. It’s torture. There are no circumstances that justify it.
