Skepticism is a dress that appears elegant: it vainly aspires to suit everyone and give the wearer charisma and personality. Cynicism is satisfying: it makes you feel different and better than other people, those naive, unwary souls who hope and believe.
The year’s end and the new year is a time of well-wishes and resolutions. One calendar closes and a fresh one opens, with unfounded faith that it will be better than the last. Personally, I always carry and nurture that hope like a precious gift, no matter what.
I think that skepticism is actually the disguise and livery of those who are beholden to it. I prefer an optimistic heart and, despite everything, faith in reason. That’s why I believe in the power of goodness, in the future of humankind, in the infinite goodness of He who gave us life.
I prefer an unwavering conviction that the new year will be fairer, more joyful, more empathetic and more serene. That’s what I wish each of you with all my being: a 2024 dedicated to love. Believe me, even just trying it will make it better!
Acrobats poised on a tightrope between hope and despair, we grasp onto the handhold of a special day. A day that has been bringing us the Good News for two thousand years, bolstering us in the certainty that goodwill, sooner or later – but always – will prevail.
As Holy Christmas returns, I pray that an awareness of the wonderful complexity of life may find its place within us. A complexity that does not confuse our clear, coherent vision of our earthly path, but guides us.
Nothing is simpler (or stupider) than war. Every conflict requires a forced duality between good guys and bad guys, between allied (and complicit) friends to be protected and saved, and adversary enemies to be dehumanized, to be hated endlessly, to be eliminated.
I hope that Christmas will incite us to reflect on complexity. Each person harbors a single soul formed of the thoughts and feelings that make up our consciousness; each body is a teeming miracle of more than thirty trillion cells. Likewise, the world is always infinitely larger and more complex than we can know, perceive and understand.
The world is not made of friends and enemies, but of brothers and sisters. Let us respect and love them, embracing diversity and complexity. Then everything will be simpler, just like those few wonderful moral principles that He who was born today gave to support his children.

Often words, the more common and important they are, the lighter they seem, and the more weight they potentially carry. “Thank you” is one, and another that resonates almost everywhere, especially at certain times of year, is “best wishes”. I think words, as long as we fill them with meaning, are blessings (and it is certainly not a question of superstition). I strongly believe that these messages, when they come from the heart, take flight towards others, expressing our wishes and our hopes for those around us… The positive energy sincere well-wishes create always makes our experiences in this life sweeter, lighter and more full of grace.
In my beautiful native Italian we say “Auguri”, a word with millennia-old roots in Etruscan and Roman. In its own way, it evokes the transcendent: it indicated the ancient priests’ privileged relationship with the sky, to which they looked to follow the flight of the birds (messengers of the gods) and predict the future. At this special time of year, in whose core message lies the heart of Christianity and in whose meaning humanity finds a renewed meaning and coherence, trust and serenity, I would like to extend to all of you my most affectionate “thank you”, for your support and for the good that you do for others. My most sincere and heartfelt wish for a Holy #Easter.

I like to think that the Easter celebration is the perfect time for a renewed inner blooming, a kind of spiritual spring that we can rediscover thanks to this Christian holiday that celebrates life winning out.
During our earthly existence, we dwell within time. We are immersed in it. We move (and flow) along this path, which only appears to be linear because in our hearts we know how illusory chronological time truly is. Yet, giving meaning to your time, to your passage through life, shaping it and seizing its rhythm and composing upon it the melody of action, with joy and responsibility, is what I believe to be the secret to a full and peaceful life. And it is the greatest wish that I extend – and that I myself embrace – from this day that reminds us (and bears witness) to the sweet promise of the Resurrection.
Even during the seemingly suspended time of a hospital stay, it is invaluable that we optimize it and give it a profound meaning, especially when there are children in the forced condition of hospitalization. This is what the foundation that bears my name took into consideration when designing the cutting-edge socio-educational center that was inaugurated just a few days ago, the ABF “Maria Manetti Shrem” Educational Center for the “Meyer” Children’s Hospital in Florence.
It is never too late to rediscover the sense of our inner time: the time for doing good and living well, together. It is a blessed impulse and shall never be time wasted! To be reborn, as the Christian holiday reminds us each year, is the manifest miracle of our existence that is renewed every day.
