Ay shout out to @variety for the write up, but this shit is ridiculous. The notion that I produced a whole movie about how the far-right “saved my life” amid controversy is insane, pure unadulterated🧢 , and if you’ve seen the movie at any of these private screenings, you know that!! Without spoilers, ‘Dear Kelly’ is a portrait of a middle-class American family torn apart by politics after their home was foreclosed, which aims to expose the underlying economic circumstances and traumatic life events that drove Kelly J. Patriot (the documentary’s protagonist) into psychosis and caused him to abandon his family to “fight for America.” The film tries to help Kelly work through his resentments toward his former landlord, turn over a new leaf, and ultimately reunite with his family as a stronger, more present dad. Politics are definitely a theme, but a very minor one. Addiction, obsession, and family dynamics are the main threads. There is a brief moment toward the end of the film during an emotional scene where I mention that Kelly gave me some solid advice when I was in a dark place, but that is probably a 30-second detour from the film’s main through line, and so it is truly mind blowing to me that Variety would take that moment out-of-context to run a full piece alleging that I’m out here screening some kinda self-centered movie about how far-right conservatives “saved my life.” I should say though.. I’m not surprised. I was curious about what strategy the mainstream press would use to discredit this new project and it seems like this is a taste of what’s to come as this film gets more eyeballs on it… it’s in their best interest to portray me as some kinda unhinged, conspiratorial moron who fell down the conservative grifter pipeline because I had no other friends, which is obviously bullshit but they’re running with it regardless. So I just wanna remind u all, Channel 5 will always be independent and I love all you guys!!!!! We don’t fuck with custers, c5 worldwide Hollywood and vine 5️⃣🌎
