Battle Tested – in more ways than one 😉.
We wrapped up Spring Break with a tour of the USS Alabama where the kids related a lot of their questions to the War in Ukraine 🇺🇦.
We got to talk about the real costs of
war. Admittedly – they were mesmerized to learn of the abilities of these fighting machines.
Vacay wasn’t all history lessons and civics (my favorite 💙), they also got some fun beach time too 🏖☀️🌊.

I’m exciting that our podcast @nativelandpod will offer a platform where the diversity of our experiences in life and politics can be shared —regardless if it fits your truth or not, it’s mine. Welcome home y’all. @angelarye @tiffanydcross #nativelandpod #NothingButaMoveofGOD
On this episode LIVE from @essencefest, we discussed the politics of the attacks on Black women. Our good friend, Marilyn Mosby, is one of those affected. Marilyn is at home with an ankle bracelet due to injustice at the Justice Department. Did you sign the petition? JusticeforMarilynMosby.com #NLPFam, if you haven’t already, please sign the petition asking President Biden to pardon Marilyn Mosby. The fight is not over. On the second episode of @nativelandpod, co-host @AndrewGillum challenges Nikki Haley’s factless answer about America not being a racist country. And ASSURES her that he doesn’t want his kids experiencing racism either, however…👀

“It’s easy to allow the enemy’s language and definition of who you are to seep in.” NLP cohost @andrewgillum recognizes the power in the work of @crystalmasonthefight live @essencefest and emphasized the power we have in making our voices heard! We hold the keys to change, and it’s time to embrace that power, #NLPFam!!! New episode out NOW on iHeart and wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio ⬆️ #nativelandpod #nlp #welcomehomeyall

So proud of @garychambersjr for how he’s running his campaign to be the next Louisiana Senator. A rising tide lifts all boats, and Gary’s rejection of zero-sum politics is exactly what we need in this moment. Full episode out on @quakemedia & @applepodcasts. Show link in bio.
Poet, podcaster, and elected official… what can’t @mariahforathens do?!
A member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network, Mariah Parker is part of a new wave of young women of color entering politics. She first made headlines after being sworn in as an Athens-Clarke County Commissioner, at age 26, with her hand on a copy of The Autobiography of Malcolm X held by her mother. Photos of her taking the oath went viral, highlighting the growing numbers of millennial Black women making their voices heard in local politics nationwide.
Mariah is also openly queer, a hip hop artist (her stage name is Linqua Franqa), a PhD candidate in linguistics at the University of Georgia where she is also a graduate teaching assistant in the department of language and literacy education, and community organizer dedicated to transformative politics and civic engagement. As County Commissioner, she is focusing on creating economic stability and racial justice as well as criminal justice reform and raising the minimum wage.
Mariah is also co-host of the @iheartreparations, a show on iHeartRadio about Hip Hop and politics where they explore the history of public policy and its impacts on Hip Hop life; what Hip Hop culture tells us about our political reality; and the role of Hip Hop in shaping our political future.
She’s a star, y’all! #womenshistorymonth
For those who don’t know her already, I’d like to take a second to appreciate Durham Councilor Jillian Johnson for our #womenshistorymonth feature.
Jillian was first elected to the Durham City Council in 2015 on a platform of racial, economic, and environmental justice, police accountability, equitable development, broadening democracy, and centering the voices of those who are most impacted by the issues facing our city. In 2017, Jillian was unanimously chosen to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore by her council colleagues, and in 2019, Jillian was elected to a second term on the Durham City Council.
Since June of 2020 Jillian has served as the North Carolina State Advisor for Movement Voter Project. MVP works to strengthen progressive power at all levels of government by helping donors support the best and most promising local community-based organizations in key states, with a focus on youth and communities of color. MVP believes that supporting local movement vote groups is the most effective strategy to transform our country.
Jillian is a co-founder of Durham for All, an organization working to build a multi-racial, cross-class, political vehicle in Durham. Jillian is also on the national board of Local Progress, a network of progressive local elected officials, and co-chair of the state chapter. Jillian is active in the labor movement and was one of nearly 1,000 people arrested in 2013 as part of North Carolina’s Moral Monday movement. Jillian is also a member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network.
A true force in her community, here’s to Jillian!
Today’s #womenshistorymonth feature is Rhode Island @mackdistrict6. Tiara is an educator and activist raised in the South.
Tiara works as a Youth Organizer, empowering young people to engage in local and national social issues. Tiara is a Board Member of Women’s Health and Education Fund (WHEF) and of the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA.
Tiara decided to run for Rhode Island Senate in part to increase representation for the communities she is part of. “I was very cautiously optimistic,” she said. “Because I was hardworking, knocked on every single door during a global pandemic, got down to the nitty gritty…and building a team that would help me do the rest made me feel confident.”
A member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network, Tiara is leading the way on more than 25 policies and is co-sponsoring several more this year. These policies include a bill to limit maximum solitary confinement to 15 days, as well as bills on source of income discrimination, affordable housing and comprehensive queer-inclusive sexual education.
We’re with you, Tiara!
I’m privileged to share the greatness that is North Carolina Representative @vernettaalston for today’s #womenshistorymonth feature.
Vernetta is a native of Durham, North Carolina and grew up in Cary. She attended North Carolina State University for undergraduate school and received a J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
A member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network, Vernetta is an attorney and has worked with the North Carolina Center on Death Penalty Litigation for over five years. While working at the Center, she served as co-counsel for Henry McCollum, who was exonerated after spending thirty years in prison due to a wrongful conviction.
This past session, Vernetta introduced legislation to increase minimum wage, expand health services for women, and to address food insecurity around the State.
Thank you for all that you do, Representative!
Our #womenshistorymonth feature is D.C. Neighborhood Councilor Alexandra Bailey!
Alexandra Bailey currently works at the ACLU as a National Organizing Specialist. She studied organizing and political change theory at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Prior to joining the ACLU, Alex served as the Coordinator for Women’s March in Chicago, Illinois. She has frequently used her organizing skills to win numerous campaigns, ranging from tenant protection and voting rights for unhoused citizens, to passage of the Equal Right Amendment in Illinois. Alexandra is also a member of @nbjconthemove Good Trouble Network.
A true servant of her community, thank you for all that you do, Commissioner!
