Harisadhan, popularly known as Hari S, was one of the prominent members of the group of intellectuals who formed Calcutta Film Society in 1947. He received institutional training in filmmaking at the film school of the University of Southern California. After completing his university program, he served Irving Pichel as an observer apprentice on three films. He was the first from the Calcutta Film Society to make films. Harisadhan went on to make 50 odd documentaries and commercials between 1948 and 1984. Among these, Panchthupi: A Village in West Bengal (1955), The Story of Tata Steel (1956), and Konarak: The Sun Temple (1949) have earned iconic status. Weavers of Maindargi (1953), sponsored by Burmah-Shell, was based on the cooperative movement among the weavers of Sholapur. From 1950 to 1955, Harisadhan directed 8 advertising films. Two were produced by Lipton. While Ajoy Kar did the camerawork, the film was edited by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. One of the films featured magician PC Sorcar. Another advertising film for the Dunlopillo mattress featured Ashok Kumar and Meena Kumari. Ameen Sayani did the voiceover for it. He also made two feature-length fiction films Eki Ange Eto Rup (1965) starring Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Madhabi Mukherjee, Basanta Choudhury and the Uttam Kumar & Suchitra Sen starrer Kamallata (1969). Eki Ange Eto Rup received a Certificate of Merit at Edinburgh Film Festival in 1965.
