Wouldn’t It Be Nice if there was a documentary about The Beach Boys? Darlin’, there is! ☀️ “The Beach Boys,” an all-new documentary, streaming exclusively on @DisneyPlus beginning May 24, 2024.
This week in 1964, The Beach Boys released “I Get Around,” backed with ‘Don’t Worry Baby.” It became their first chart-topping hit, as well as America’s first number-one hit by a homeland group since November 1963 in the middle of Beatlemania. Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham called it one of the great A and B sides of a 45 and said “I Get Around” is just masterful with the key modulations and breakdowns that repeat and just so sophisticated. Unbelievable piece of work.” Tell us what you think! #1964 @thebeachboys @lindseybuckingham #igetaround #dontworrybaby

60 years ago today, The Beach Boys released their sixth album, All Summer Long. Regarded as one of the first true concept albums, the songs relate to the experiences of a typical Southern Californian teenager. Produced and largely written by Brian, the album featured his most complex arrangements to date. The album reached number 4 in the U.S. and “I Get Around” became the band’s first number-one hit. Brian later cited the album as a “turning point” for the band, and his first LP that could compete against Phil Spector and the Beatles. The majority of the instrumentation was provided by the band members themselves, with studio musicians on select tracks. Classics included “I Get Around,” “All Summer Long,” “Hushabye,” “Little Honda,” “Wendy,” “Girls on the Beach” and “Don’t Back Down,” among others. “I thought Pet Sounds was incredible. It was one of those albums that pulled you in straight away. Start to finish it’s perfection. I think in a way that album set the bar higher for many of us as musicians. It was a real testament to Brian’s true musical genius. It still is today. You can put that album on now and it sounds just as inspiring and fresh as it did when it came out.” – Graham Nash You can revisit The Brian Wilson Interview with Graham Nash – Link in Bio Photo: Amy Grantham @officialgrahamnash #petsounds #harmony
45 years ago this week, The Beach Boys released their L.A. (Light Album), their 23rd studio effort. While Brian didn’t have much to do with the recording, his “Good Timin’,” written with Carl was at Top 40 hit and featured stellar group harmonies. Said Brian of this period: “Record labels kept asking us for new albums. Maybe “asking” is a polite word. They expected them, and didn’t expect anything but yes for an answer. So we ended up making records, but they were records that showed how the band was being pulled in many different directions at once, albums like M.I.U. Album in 1978, L.A. (Light Album) in 1979, and Keepin’ the Summer Alive in 1980. Most fans of the band don’t like those records. Some fans don’t even know about them. There are only a few songs on those records that I like when I think about them, like “Good Timin’” and “Goin’ On,” but mostly they aren’t worth thinking about too hard. I didn’t do much on those albums.” #1979 #thebeachboys #goodtiming #la #lightalbum

Today in 1988, Brian released his first solo album, the eponymous Brian Wilson. Said Rolling Stone: “Brian Wilson is a stunning reminder of what pop’s been missing all these years. It is also the best Beach Boys long player since 1970’s Sunflower, although Wilson is the only Beach Boy on it. The songs are full of sunshine choirboy harmonies and sing-along hooks, while the rich, expansive arrangements echo the orchestral radiance of Wilson’s spiritual mentor, Phil Spector.” Featured here is an early tracking of Brian’s stacked harmonies. “You say how you feel, and songs don’t lie. Songs are the most honest form of human expression there is – there’s nothing that lies about a song.”
