I love this photograph. This is how Kerry looked the entire drive across the plains. Notice the gallon jug of water and the box of saltine crackers on the floor. I was so worried about her, and also just in shock at the strength and resilience it takes to be a mother (all mothers, everywhere, for all time). Women are astonishing.

Remembering this unexpected roll of film I shot 4 years ago today, in the middle of the pandemic, in the middle of Wyoming, after the bus broke down for the third time.
Our last night in the bus. The following day, in western Iowa, the bus broke down for the fourth and final time. We were at a trailer park with no shade and no bathroom-access and it was 97 degrees outside and Kerry was in awful shape. Couldn’t even keep down crackers or oatmeal. I jumped in the bus to go buy Gatorade and ginger chews and anything else I could think of from a nearby CVS, but when I put the key in the ignition the engine just would. not. start… And that’s when we decided to call it. Had the bus towed away for the last time. Found the nearest hotel and booked a room.

Teton National Park. It’s hard to overstate how thrilled we were to have made it over the Tetons in this thing. We’d had two breakdowns by this point, and plenty more emotional breakdowns. Multiple oil leaks and false starts. 1,200 miles winding up the west coast, another 1,000 miles through the desert and not even halfway home, but looking at this mountain range in the rearview mirror of our 43-year-old bus made us feel proud.
