It’s possible that the qualities that made Southgate such a good person, and therefore so respected as a culture-changer, are the same as those that caused him to fail at the finish, notably – and this is, in normal life, a really good thing, but maybe less so when deciding who to pick, and stay on the field, in an international football final – a very deep sense of loyalty.
Two Dutch fans have got into my garden.

Thanks for song choice your Majesties. Although no sign of any royalties. From the Royals.
Quite glad Alcaraz isn’t playing for Spain tonight.
Went to opening night of the new Hello Dolly @hellodollyldn yesterday. It’s marvellous. I went with my daughter. Who some of you may know is called Dolly. This did lead to some interminable jokes where middle aged people I know said “well hello!” to her a lot for which I can only say a big Boomer sorry.
I’m dealing with the pain by telling myself that if we *had* won it, it would’ve started to feel anticlimactic round about now.
The phrase “is it coming home?” makes it to the Oval Office. Which is nice although Americans don’t know what it means and frankly Joe B doesn’t need any more confusing.
One thing that’s always on the menu with these guys is beef.

England fans try to drown out Juan Mata praising Lamaine Yamal by singing Football’s Coming Home.
