Elevator magic. We’re in 1 hotel room and Hugo wants to sleep so we went downstairs to play Uno and then Spades and I had a balloon in my magic bag so we blew it up and played balloon tennis for a bit then, tired, finally, we headed back upstairs and found this magic elevator. #Madrid
This is me going full on historical nerd. It’s what Hugo calls Denis-ing. We went to La Manga which is a very fun strip of sand in the Murcia region of Spain. We dropped Declan off with our friends and their son and then Hugo and I took off to Cartagena, which is 30 minutes away. I was excited to come here because, I know quite a bit about the Carthaginians and their history in Spain and Hannibal’s ultimate showdown with Rome. In our latest play, The Song of Rome, Lisa Peterson and I have a section on Dido and Aeneas. We love Queen Dido – the Carthaginian queen. We first stopped by the Roman amphitheater, which was built at the direction of Augustus. We then visited the remains of the Punic wall and this crazy crypt. I threw in the picture of this amazing tree because of the root.

Happy Songkrom from Bangkok. This is the massive squirt gun vending alley. Everyone is running around squirting each other. Of course it’s so hot that it feels good. I’ve learned not to make eye contact and you won’t get shot.
Floating Market…they use hooks to bring your boat to them and then show you their wares..
Morning ritual. Here at Sukhothai in Bangkok…very nice. #largowinch
Athens airport bookshop. A little on the nose….
Tools of the trade…#filminginbangkok
Bangkok parking lot…best way to get around. Funnily enough, I think Paris has about as many motos…I ride one myself.
I love these little shrines, which are everywhere. You see them different gas stations, you sit in the front of the office buildings, you see them in front of private homes. This one is of Brahma I think, which is in origin a Hindu god. Quite a few Ganeshes about. There is a long history of Hinduism intertwine with Buddhism in this part of the world and it’s so interesting to see it play out in the continuing tradition of shrines.
Madrid!!!!
I am such a geek when it comes this museum. Was here last in 1998. There wasn’t a separate entrance or a modern cafe. It felt more gloomy and decrepit in my memory. But it is a beautiful place–confusing but beautifully curated. It has all of my favorite paintings and I like it better than any museum I’ve ever visited. #velasquez is my heart. #hieronymousbosch is my nightmare, #goya is my soul, #ribera is my dreamscape. And, I mean, Fra Angelico, Dürer, El Greco, Titian, Rubens, Murillo….I will be back and this time I won’t wait 26 years!
