Chop and Drop Timing 🌱 Find out the best times to chop and drop trees in tropical, temperate, and arid regions, and why the precipitation exceeds the evaporation rule is crucial. This clip is from one of Geoff’s weekly Q&A sessions in the Online Permaculture Design Course. Enrollments for 2024 are open until the end of July! Click the link in our bio or visit discoverpermaculture.com for more info. Use code “INSTA150” for a $150 tuition discount. Helpful Definitions: ✏️ Chop-and-Drop: Regularly cutting support trees and plants, then leaving the prunings on the forest floor to decompose, enrich the soil, and support fungal networks. ✏️ Coppicing: Coppicing is a technique used to harvest wood from certain types of trees. The trees are cut down to stumps at or near ground level, and new shoots are allowed to grow until the wood is at a useful size for harvesting. By choosing and rotating the harvest of trees, we can sustainably source wood for cooking, heating, mulch, and timber without having to fell old-growth or mature forests. ✏️ Pollarding: Similar to coppicing, but involves cutting trees higher up to prevent animal browsing, provide shade when needed, and make it easier to walk around. #permaculture #discoverpermaculture #permaculturedesign #permaculturecourse #permaculturedesigncourse #organicgardening #planthealth #gardening #mulch #pollard #coppice #permaculturegarden #foodforest #chopanddrop #permaculturetip

Many top-notch organic restaurants seamlessly incorporate food gardens into their landscapes. These gardens not only enhance the visual appeal and provide fresh produce for patrons but also serve as a showcase for the restaurant’s ethical values. Demonstrating what can be achieved in small spaces, they inspire people to realize that diverse, nutrient-dense food gardens can be created in most home gardens while maintaining aesthetic appeal. Students on the recent Earthworks course at @zaytunafarm had the exciting opportunity to operate the excavator, gaining hands-on experience while we constructed a swale on the property. Helpful Definitions: ✏️ Swales: Swales are long, level excavations, which can vary greatly in width and treatment from small ridges in gardens, rock piles across slopes, or deliberately excavated hollows in flatlands and low-slope landscapes. Swales are intended to store water in the underlying soils or sediments. They are, simply, cross-flow dry channels or basins intended to totally intercept overland flow, to hold it for a few hours or days, and to let it infiltrate as GROUNDWATER RECHARGE into soils and tree root systems. Trees are the essential components of swale planting systems. Ditch-like water catchment and tree-growing systems built on contour intended to stop, spread, and soak water into the landscape. While swales can be defined and used differently, in the general context of permaculture, swales are constructed on contour with the intention of hydrating the landscape, and trees are used to help maintain long-term swale stability while benefiting from the extra moisture. #permaculture #discoverpermaculture #permaculturedesign #permaculturecourse #landhydration #waterconservation #swale #swales #earthworks #earthworkscourse #zaytunafarm #waterharvesting #rainwaterharvesting #harvestwater #sustainableagriculture #ecologicalrestoration
